After Effects question

Hi there, I'm coming back to AE after many years (combustion, shake, etc.). Is there any way to have the the tool you are using (brush, etc.) disappear while you are applying pressure/clicking (painting), and then reappear when you are done? That was a really cool feature in shake and I hope it's in AE somewhere. It's nice to see all of the pixels without the GUI tool distracting you.
