  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON - Info and Data Sheets

O.K. got it... it's a type of screw. So is that something like the side handle used to screw into the brain? Can you "guess" what attachment goes there?

I might hang a key chain there, but considering it's lined up with the sensor's imaging plane it would be a rather logical place for a focus hook. One might say a smart place.

Honestly though, you can bolt anything there.

Phil, how do you think Weapon would look or fit inside of an existing DSMC cage?

LMAO... Measure focus marks so the 2nd can pull 'blind' how absurdly professional.

If I didn't know better, I'd think people around here are unaware that the RED One, Scarlet and EPIC all have sensor plane markings and focus hooks as well... :001_rolleyes:

Through educational efforts at various workshops and the stuff I do on Sunday's I've learned not to judge.

There's a lot of types of shooters out there. I've noticed a lot of folks specifically coming through the DSLR revolution moving their way up to cameras like Red's occasionally miss the hard "nuts and bolts" of filmmaking a lot of other folks have had to grow to know.

Focus hooks and the art of focus pulling are fundamentals of filmmaking in my opinion. There's a contingent of shooters out there who haven't used anything but electronic still lenses and they don't know the difference between those and cinematic/mechanical lenses, have never seen a PL or PV Mount, and don't fully understand the general demands of feature film production standards.

It's a growing and experience thing.

There's kids out here in LA who want to be the next Spielberg who have no concept of composition, camera movement, or cinematic storytelling. That's okay though. If they really want to progress they will need to learn "everything". Especially these days.

Of course, Phil. Agree with all that. While it wasn't my intent or meaning when I posted that last comment, I can see how it comes across. So, yeah... Poor attempt at humor. Oops.

No worries. It wasn't directed to you exactly, but I am more or less pointing out there's a lot of shooters out there with a large variance in experience and knowledge. It's something I even have to remind myself of when handling workshops even among working professionals.

For instance, many of us here on Reduser understand the fundementals of Black Shading. I've met people who've had Dragon for over a year who have never ran a calibration despite each firmware explicitly stating to do so each update.

Lots of types of people out there who sometimes need a bit of guidance to the right direction. Whether that's bolt standards, focus hooks, or whatever. It's one of the things a community like this is good for in my opinion.

Appreciate the candid discussion and all the feedback.

The name is here to stay.

There are some of you with genuine security concerns and for those that would prefer we will be offering a "stealth" Weapon without the Weapon branding engraved on it... simple check box at the time of order.

Added new flavor :-) Great move!

I have a question about the ordering process. I'm sorry if this has been covered. It says upgrades will happen in order of timestamp with priority on CF. When do we get to place such orders, to ensure an early upgrade, will it be an online thing or do I physically need to go to NAB? (Please say I do) or do we know yet?

Things are changing rapidly, but I would say a safe bet would be pre-orders begin online during day 01 at NAB 2015. Unless something changes that is.

The upgrades themselves don't start until summer/fall.

Pre-ordering early will give Red a heads up on what to expect during the influx of upgrade Dragons that will be incoming so they can properly staff up and have enough components on hand to meet demand.

I'm going to have my cell phone with me, laptop, and likely a bottle of good alcohol, and a bag of moolah at NAB.

Added information about the "stealth Weapon" option for those who have genuine security concerns regarding the name.

I think you have to go to NAB Phil. I have a couple spare Sofas if you want!!

That's cool, but the real problem is not security. The real problem is that it's simply an incredibly immature name. I understand and respect that RED wants to fight the establishment, but the days of playing American under dogs are over. It's simply time to become the cool camera makers they deserve to be. That the discussion always seems to shift towards security concerns is sad as it's not the real issue regarding most people being concerned about the name.

As a rental I fight everyday the tide against RED, being fed by the fact that it's not seen as a "real professional camera". The silly name game that seems to come from teenagers, does not help. Not saying Alexa is a better name, but in saying so I thought Scarlet and Epic where brilliant names. Weapon is just blunt, terrible and whatever... Getting tired of it and in this case it's just not immature it's actually terrible also for the fact that it doesn't roll of the tongue in a nice way. It's simply disregarding the meaning not a good name. I'm willing to bet that the name won't stick and it will be continued to be called Epic... So what's the point? That RED is at war...Hmmm...

Really want to hear Roger Deakins say, bring the weapon... Doubt it though

There's other threads for continued and ongoing conversation about the name.

However:

Deakins cares less about camera names than you think. He cares about image, feeling, and mood. And this "real" problem is a more localized one on an individual basis.

I honestly can't fathom the fight you're fighting in that regard. But if you understand the system you know Dragon does what many cameras can't do. It's pivotal to show your clients that. It's also the shooter's responsibility to produce quality work with the cameras to show. Luckily Red cameras are out there shooting every type of thing at every budget level. Which makes that "fight" sort of a non-issue, at least to me.

So many threads to keep up on; two days behind, been glued to my seat for several hours.

All this is very exciting.

I enjoy this easter egg hunt, from what I've seen this maybe the most Perfect Red yet.

Port Location I love

Size is amazing even smaller than Epic

New control menu on the dumb side

Dual Red Monitor Output - EVF & Touch - no more +1 Module needed - Keep your HDMI port for Wireless Transmitters

Bravo Red this looks like a Winner.

Much better option than Alexa Mini.

Packing the punch!

I finally understand why you guys went with the name Weapon

Once we see the specs I think people will get it.

Can we have a little love for the original early adopters?

Instead of making us constantly refresh our browsers or whatever it will take, can we just have a window - i.e. something like a 3 or 5 day period where as long as you make your preorder within that window it goes by your serial number.

For example, I was Redone Serial Number 206 order and $1000 deposit placed at NAB April 2006 (with first cameras delivered in Fall of 2007) so as long as I placed my preorder within the 3 or 5 day window my order would be filled in order of that 206 serial number without having to try to beat every other owner in the world with an order.

Also, it would be nice if the preorder deposit was closer to the $1000 original Redone deposit, than the $5000 epic upgrade deposit that (IIRC) was required in June of 2010 and the cams didn't ship until September of 2011. (Maybe $1000 non-refundable deposit.) I think for most of us that was a pretty hefty chunk of change to not be able to use for that long.

As long as I'm publishing my wishlist - it would also be nice to have the same type of keep the old cam/get the new one too (for extra money) option that we had with Epic-X - especially for my customers that have underwater housings specifically fitted for the epic/scarlet body.

Finally, I'm sure I missed something but is Weapon upgrade a use the same sensor and lens mount but new body and electronics, or is it a totally new camera?
