  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Weapon Forged CF #47 "Skully" - Los Angeles

+1 for the match selfie

Weapon selfie! That's wiked! Is there any stick for a Weapon?

Sure is!!

I seen one with a Alexa mini on Youtube so there has to be a smaller selfie stick available than that one ^ ?

Brief update. Shooting OLPF tests (STH, Standard, LLO) on Wednesday, should have everything online by Friday if I do my job right. That stuff will be properly lit and is more to show the differences between the main OLPF options.

I'm thinking of doing relatively similar match tests to what I did for RED Epic Dragon. Might even use my noggin again for that specific test as Color Science, OLPFs, and cameras have evolved since then.

Thinking about using my sharpest glass this time around to show exactly what's possible here.

Shooting some R3D + 4K ProRes as well.

There was a thread about Weapon 5000 ISO or something some time ago.

I'd be very interested to see a low light comparison between Epic Dragon and Weapon.

I'm not expecting any major change on the sensor/r3d side, but I'm trying to understand all the work flow options with the weapon and how stable those options are. For example, now that wireless is integrated with the weapon: what are the distances that works , how stable are the connections to various pieces of hardware, what is doable with these new workflow changes. I kind of think the weapon workflow is still a bit "beta"(i'm not expecting everything to be perfect), so trying to understand what is ready for full production and what is coming soon. I'm mostly focused on any workflow that reduces cost for heavy vfx and performance capture shoots(i.e. it's not the cost of the camera that effects production heavy vfx, but complexities that become costly in post ). I'm also trying to understand the new time code and metadata integration options, what works with what, and how "solid" the workflow is(i.e. what should I buy now to connect with the weapon and be a early adopter VS just get the weapon and wait a bit for the workflow integration stuff).

I'll have to do the side by side at another time, but I'll get to it. No longer have Epic Dragon around the hut.

Hi Phil,

I can loan you my CF Dragon, minimal set, if you like.

Thank you very much

would like to see how Weapon sits on shoulder with newest extended modules.Whenever i put dragon on my shoulder feels like im handicapped and everything working against general physics rules. Why its so hard to use newer cameras on shoulder nowadays?

Hi phil I am really glad that I am also following ure path almost, but yet to receive my weapon
I don't know how much money I earned out of it ,
but red really made me learn the digital film making to the precession ,for someone like me who came from film celluloid background
its nostalgic feel the hear the date nov 3rd 2011

If you guys are curious I picked up a few REDVOLT XLs with my kit to explore the lighter weight side of things (I usually use big honking V-Lock bricks). I'm getting 1 hour and 52 minutes on a fully charge on a very fresh REDVOLT XL. I actually thought it would be lower than that for some reason. I'll be shooting with them this week, so I'll "know for sure" soon.

Hi Phil, so after having the camera a bit, are you still getting 1:52 of battery time on Redvolt XLs?

Since Redvolts are 89 wh, if I buy the Global Media Pro batteries (95 wh), should I expect to get similar run times off the battery? Maybe even a little longer since it's got an additional 6 wh?

The GMP 95 wh are nice because they are only 1.6 lbs, which is very light for V-mounts.

Thanks for any info.

Phil - what battery plate did you get for your weapon? Assuming you're not just using redvolt XLs

I am also using the Element Technica V-Lock plate, useful for longer shoot days.

Since the batteries have settled a bit it's more like 1 and half hours, maybe an hour and 20 minutes. You do have to swap the battery out before it dies completely as the system doesn't like power to be ripped especially while recording. I think that occurs with about 5-8 minutes to go. The GMPs should be in the same wheelhouse, but they are much taller than REDVOLT XLs, which is my main reason for using them.

I got a couple of cam in action shots. Here's a shot of me with Weapon and the Xenon FF-Primes my grip/gaffer grabbed a couple weeks ago:

And here's one I grabbed while shooting some overcranked plants waving in the wind with the RPP 300mm T2.9:

Finishing up some design work for a feature that starts filming next year this coming week and two small things. Curious to see what the next big gig is for me and my Weapon. My 8K glass is all coming together this month, which is great. Mamiyas, Zeiss Otus Primes, etc... Might toss in a few other lenses before things get rolling on that front. I haven't touched base with Schneider in a heartbeat, but I'm curious how that 18mm T2.4 is coming along. I have a bit of time before that reality is very, very real.

I think there's two things I've finished that haven't been released yet that I've shot on Weapon. Plus a lens related thing that's nearly done. Got a couple things that I shot on Epic Dragon that finish up this month too.

Phil,

I should have access to a Weapon in a week or so and as I am presently on the ACS Technical Committee we are planning at taking a look at the new Weapon. As a part of this we were considering doing Dynamic range tests and throwing the Weapon up against a Dragon and maybe an Alexa as its considered the industry gold standard.

Phil if you have already initiated a similiar test we may decide to go down another route rather than repeating the same?
