  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Weapon Forged CF #47 "Skully" - Los Angeles

Thanks for the update Phil. The new data xfer rates benefits are a given and of course the ProRes option is more 'catching up with the times' but both are worth the upgrade alone (reason enough for us to be on board)

Really interested in the new form factor ergonomics on noise/performance; love to see your dB tests when you get a chance.

You mention some bolt-on display benefits but what's power-on time like now, compared to Dragon? Read a few posts that suggests cold>ready is actually longer than Dragon, be great to get your observations..

Sidekick has us sidehandle fanatics a little concerned to... get that ET is trying to dev something to replace sidehandle, but as it stands now it seems Sidekick is pretty much a camera-attached Redmote; practically necessary but not practical as we'd like it? Seems you're hanging out for the after market Weapon sidehandle too.

Shared Weapon R3D... holy grail ... :) +1 love to play with these

Boot up time "changes" this month according to Jarred, but yes it currently takes like 30-ish seconds to boot at the moment. However, there's a firmware update coming this month that chops that down significantly.

I work in a lot of different ways. Studio days the Sidekick fits the bill big time. It's not really an attached REDMOTE per say, it's more of a "direct connect" camera control that's easy for your AC to get to and useful for self operation as well, especially if you aren't using one of the LCD Touch screens. For the stuff I shoot on my own the Side Handle is my wing man. I can customize that thing to my hearts content and have it do whatever I want, which if it's like the previous model means I'm putting all my focus, exposure, and Motion Mount controls on it.

I'm waiting on what RED and ET have been developing on the Side Handle front. I did indeed get to hold a prototype in my hand during my last visit at RED. Won't say anything other than it's much, much more ergonomic than the OG DSMC Side Handle.

Knowing there's prototypes floating around eases me a great deal; I did kind of wonder (or even fear) that the ET sidehandle would remain in the realm of the mythological. Rendering the beloved current sidehandle obsolete in the new Weapon connection ecosystem seems to have spooked a few people (or, at least, me) in wholly celebrating their decision to upgrade.

Dearly hope this surfaces by the time those WF weapons are done and us CF folk get called up.

Phil, is there any prototype quick release system for Weapon? 1st Gen Quick Release plate is few inch longer than weapon body ,so in this case we cant put it inside of weapon case with plate on.

The first gen quick release base plate, meaning the DSMC Mounting Plate or Modular Assault Plate, is exactly 3/8ths of an inch longer than the base of Weapon. Which means the DSMC Quick Release with the 19mm rod support bolted on is 1 inch and 3-8ths from the base of Weapon. In other words, just a smidge longer than the Weapon body with the Base Expander.

To answer your other questions from this thread and PMs.

Yes. You can load Weapon .R3Ds up in the most current builds of REDCINE-X Pro. I am also working with footage natively inside Adobe Premiere Pro CC and it's working fine.

I'll be shooting some REDuser specific tests and providing those files for you this coming week, doing it all in one chunk. I won't be filming my kitchen or bathroom, I will be shooting what you actually want to see and sharing that with you all.

That's awesome, Phil. Congratulations man!!! Skully looks beautiful.

Congrats buddy. I'm noticing a few on the fence. If you can afford it, keep in mind when the new sensor is announced it will likely need the weapon body- that made it an easy decision for me

Phil, would you consider making one or two of those test in the Raven 4k crop?

Although not expected and you're probably right, it would be great to know if this is actually the long term plan. I am one of those on the fence. Totally satisfied with Epic's ergonomics currently despite the many improvements with Weapon.

I might indeed. Or I might shoot with Raven :) Depends.

Here's a grab from something I've been up to:

My first week or two with any really-brand-spanking-new camera system is all about figuring out what it can do. The above is from a quick shoot which will be visible soon, and perhaps helpful even to some.

What we have here is RED Weapon Dragon 5.5K HD, Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF, ISO 800, No DEB, REDCODE RAW 3:1 popped out to my flat line/base settings I often use for DRAGONcolor2/REDlogFilm (no curve). Then proceeded to numerically match to the Datacolor chart. Finished with a slightly enhanced final color grade to spice things up a bit.

It's Dragon and I already have an expanded understanding of what is possible when correctly expose in relationship to color. Everything looks absolutely lovely here. Subtle tones, pastels, and warm through cool hues have nice separation. The whole frame was decorated with various brown-ish things as well, which is where some cameras fall apart, everythihg looks nice and varied here. ISO 800 at 3:1 REDCODE RAW with the STH OLPF provides a smidge of texture, but less than what you'd get on Epic Dragon. I'll have to find time to do a side by side.

Hoping to have this footage online this week. Also, I'm picking up my Dragon Standard OLPF shortly and will be curious to see what exactly that can do.

If there's anything in particular you want me to test, let me know. This will likely be my last test week before shooting weird things again.

Really excited for you Phil! Of all people, can't wait to see what you do with Weapon. Enjoy it buddy.

Hi Phil, thanks for doing these tests. What I have been pondering is buying the XL batteries and charger for the weapon XL module, what I'd like to know is:
1) is the battery percentage dropping drastically over a few weeks
2) Is the time on XL batteries on a weapon shoots consistent (i.e. do the batteries always last on a shoot around the same amount of time)
3) How is the XL battery module working in things like a movi 15 from a form factor/weight viewpoint
4) is the camera turning off while the battery percentage is above 2%.

I really love the XL form factor, but I've been debating if I should buy the batteries & charger with my weapon based on my past experiences with redvolts ( my AB batteries are awesome, but the form factor is somewhat lacking).

1. I have no idea. I've had Weapon for 2 weeks-ish.
2. So far yes.
3. Haven't had it on a Movi, but I have had it on a motorized head and it works fine. 10 lbs setup.
4. Didn't test that just yet. I did swap out around 8 minutes remaining once. I don't typically run until flat dead.

Is thee Weapon 6K footie up somewhere yet? Not judging here guys . . . but when I was blessed with first edition Dragon and Mono I had R3D'S up in 24 hours or so. Dirty raw and soon beats tidy and later

I just picked up my Dragon Standard OLPF yesterday. Since I'm doing a side by side I'm not going to do it twice within a week of each other. Especially since I'm getting talent, studio, and crew together. I'm happy to post shots of me lighting matches in my hut at 4am again if that's desired. Also I've had three shoots, one of which will be up soon.
