  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION MINI

Cal Digit is making USB 3.0 cards for the aging Mac towers.. just be sure to keep up on new drivers. Wish Apple would come out with a new tower already....

You ain't lying, I hope these new thunderbolt enclosures can make use of the Rocket card I own, otherwise I need to buy an old tower unless it's not worth it, any advice Jarred?

Dope USB 3.0 I may have to pick one up.

Will the Ivy Bridge Mac's come out already!!!

LOL

Soon I hope glad we have this reader ready to go for when the time comes...

So if there's a ThunderBolt version in the horizon would there be a chance of it being a Hub much like the LaCie eSATA? That would be something, ultimate portable unit. 2 FW800 & 2 eSATA as HUB and Tbolt as controller

And finally the rear body/module cap is here! Hurray!

Thanks for getting these out.

Which specific USB3 cards/devices are fully compatible with the new USB3 SSD Reader on MAC Lion systems, which PCI-e or Express34 cards are recommended and known to work at USB3 speeds.

For PCIe, get the CalDigit 6GU3 card. It gives you two USB3 and two 6Gbps eSATA ports. I'm not sure which one to recommend for ExpressCard to USB3... Haven't used any recently.

I agree with Jeff. I have the CalDigit 6GU3 card in my MacPro and am using it for the two eSATA to connect my REDStations to my MacPro. The card works great. As Jarred said, you just need to keep on top of the drivers.

I'm looking at the USB3 SSD Stations so I can connect two of them to the CalDigit 6GU3 using the two ports there, and then have 2 eSATA drives for backups 1 & 2. Main backup is going to a ProAvio 24TB Raid via miniSAS.

+1 for a new MacPro system & upgrade MacBookPro's!!!

:))

How about today? should be in the store shortly :)

Damn - missed the slot! BACKORDERED!

Oh well, I'll speak to RED Europe on Tuesday and see when they'll be back in.

Thanks Jarred!

:))

Just thinking - will there be a USB3 station which you can put on the current stack for daisy chaining, same size as the current RED Stations???

Funny you should ask.. made some prototypes of those. Undecided.

I have switched over to the dark side unfortunately after many years of Mac.. took awhile to get through learning the whole windows thing but i gotta tell you.. i love the power.. and the the options. and the power. And the configurability. Did I mention the power?

I am falling in love with USB 3.

+1
Thunderbolt is my biggest 2012 deception

Olivier

Thunderbolt is great. it is awesome. but to date the adoption has been almost non-existent. The chipsets are incredibly expensive, ( i.e. expect to pay 2x the price for a REDSTATION ) the cables are incredibly expensive ( 10x as expensive as a Esata or USB 3 cable ) , and the power for portable devices is a bit sideways. I have no doubt that when it gets it's footing and someone actually really adopts it ( not sure why its taking so long ) it will be the go-to choice. Its just not there yet. USB3 is really kicking Thunderbolt's ass right now, even though thunderbolt is better setup for the future.

And I really don't understand the current Thunderbolt power thing. It is the reason why ESATA never really took off other than professional applications in my opinion. no power to the device. I was so damn excited to get my Lacie Thunderbolt Little Big Disk drive for my laptop.. but as soon as I opened the box and realized that i needed to plug it into the wall every time with a big wall wart ( something the Lacie Little Big drives never had to do in the past ) I threw it against the wall. Portable drives that you need to plug into the wall is just plain retarded.

I almost wish Firewire grew up instead of meeting its death ( or near death ).. i really think it was a great interface for many reasons.. it just never took the next step for speed.

So let us see if the PC guys (when the thunderbolt doors are opened to them) can make it a winner.. right now it is just not there yet.

Mac started loosing me slowly when malware and trojans became more and more prevalent... Yeah... It's looking like Mac is turning into something other than computing solutions. Though monitoring on an IPAD would be nice wirelessly.

Is the unit powered by USB or 5V power cord? I was wondering how it powers in the field if connected to my Laptop?

I'm more excited about this post than the RED Projectors. Finally the decision makers are recognizing the PC for what it is (and presumably getting better support than in the early dark days) and giving it the attention it deserves. :D
