  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

He he, not to worry Patrick, if you had an idea of the sizable investment we are about to go in to with Apple, you wan't worry about me switching sides any time soon... However, I'm pressed for a Bad A^%$# machine, that can play my 5K footage real time, non of that reduce footage playing crap, I need to extract TIFFS form the video streams and I don't want to each time wait and take the image back and forth form 1/8 to Full to be sure is SHARP.
 
Yeah, I know what you're talking about...! Though it's 4K for me mostly ;)

That is exactly the path I'm headed down. Building a few Windows PCs as powerful workstations for things like transcoding and running Premiere and Resolve and usual machines Macs. But - I see PCs being a bigger and bigger part of my professional life no doubt.
 
Use what you know and love. Don't worry guys, we support both camps and will continue to do so.
 
So will there be a thunderbolt REDmag reader in the works?

I think it is a simple matter of what you know and are used to. Till 2009 I used to switch between OS X and Windows on a daily basis and at the time the basic functionality and interface struck me as extremely similar. The software hasn't changed so much but now that 90% of my work is on Windows and I use OS X only when I must (as it is still by far the industry standard), I definitely find Windows 7 faster and easier, overall, though there are a couple of things which are easier on OS X 10.7. On the other hand, when I was mostly on OS X and only switched to Windows for gaming or movies in 2004, I definitely found OS X 10.4 to be easier than Windows XP. It is all in the little details, which you pick up and get used to over time (months/years), e.g. something as simple as the Win+1~9 shortcuts are indispensable - there is simply no faster way to launch and switch between apps. Looking forward, it can't get any simpler than Windows 8's Metro UI, though it could be years before professional productivity apps like Premiere Pro will move away from the classical interface.
 
Really stoked to see this USB 3.0 Red Station!!! Thanks for quickly getting this out. It will be incredibly helpful in the field.

I am also planning to jump ship from the iPhone when the Galaxy S III drops. 1080p screen on a phone??!! I'm in.
 
...What if the iPhone 5 has a 4" 1080p screen on it too, Tom? ;) Not saying that it will, but rumors seem to be hinting at that. Samsung is Apple's leading provider for screens on these phones and there's really no other reason for iPhone prototypes with the A5X to be circulating unless they're going to quadruple the pixel count... again...

I've got so many Android devices here for testing, it's hard to keep track. None of them have wooed me away from my iPhone though. Maybe I'm just biased because I much prefer to develop for the iPhone.

We are on Galaxy Notes over here.. not 1080p.. but 720p.. and it really is incredible. The size is what stands out though.. you can actually work on it.

I've been on iphones since they came out.. Tried various phones along the way but always went back after a week or so to the iphone. Finally with the Note, I haven't looked back.
 
1st Window's then android I just got a Mac do i need to jump ship Too??? :ihih:

And here starts the problem, different hardware cause different problems and all the advantages of one well tuned hardware enviroment is lost. Its just about compromises.

That's not fair :) My old PC was a Ferrari out of gas and missing wheels. The Pops finally made me switch to OS X. Life is great without pop ups, I'll try windows 7 in the near future.

Win7 users, are you pop-up free?
 
I started in the dark side. Gave up my NBA career (not really) and built my own computer at 14. Windows was great but the marketing adds and pop ups infiltrated everything. Plus, with a PC you gotta know/learn everything. I'm not here to install/troubleshoot drivers constantly. Or reinstall all my hardware/programs. I'm here to use my tools and get my work done. We already pay for our computers, then we gotta spend our own time learning to be a computer nerd so we can use them? Forget that.

I love calling Apple Care. :) Windows 7 still isn't as user friendly as OS X?

From what I gather, the SSD 1.8" mags can't go much faster than USB 3.0 or eSATA. So the extra speed of a Thunerbolt connection won't help with offloading speeds. That said, I too want thunderbolt in a mini station too.

Hopefully we get some word on the new mac pro towers at NAB. Maybe Jarred could track down his friends at Apple and give us the scoop. Word is, Jarred has already given up on apple towers, having switch over to PC with the purchase of his new PC POWER TOWER>

I wish I had a power tower. You guys think Jarred is playing games on it?

This thread sure went off topic and I am probably completely to blame :)

Speaking of some of the joys I am experiencing in the PC world.. new stuff. I just got a GTX 680 video card today. I don't play games which this card was made for but this $500 video card just happens to have 1536 cuda cores vs. 256 cuda cores on the $1200 Quadro 4000 card it replaced, and the GTX 680 has some new H.264 magic that is rendering out 1080p H264s in 3 x real time.

As Will Keir just mentioned though.. there is a lot of tinkering you need to commit to when you go to the dark side. I am finding it worth the effort, but I wouldn't put my grandparents though this..
