Well it would be nice to daisy chain for the power on the stack, if the rest of the stack, like say the 2.5" is upgraded to USB3 too?

For me, using a MacPro with the Caldigit card in, having two eSATA and two USB3 ports is nice. Two RED Stations into the USB3, and two external drives in the eSATA for backup 2 & 3.

Is the unit powered by USB or 5V power cord? I was wondering how it powers in the field if connected to my Laptop?

USB3.0 is self powered... but there is a 5V if you want to plug it in..

I have switched over to the dark side unfortunately after many years of Mac.. took awhile to get through learning the whole windows thing but i gotta tell you.. i love the power.. and the the options. and the power. And the configurability. Did I mention the power?

I am falling in love with USB 3.

If Jarred has switched over, to me, this is enough for me to know that RED will support the Windows/PC platform going forward. I can switch (back) to Windows now with a lot less anxiety. RED is my chosen acquisition medium moving forward, so its very important for me to know which platform RED will definitely support for Post (ofcourse, they can support more than one and be agnostic as much as they can).

Lots of interesting stuff out there in PC land.. Just like Adobe went after Apple's FCP blunder, HP seems to be hungry after the high end user's that apple is being accused of abandoning.

Even HP's iMac competitor the Z1 one ups the iMac for the professionals...... The all-in-one opens up and it looks like it gives you a PCI-E slot to put a rocket card in Pretty badass..

Dont worry.. Mac isn't going anywhere. I am sure Apple will release a tower someday soon. It really makes no sense not to.

That's what I believe Apple will be doing. Find a new shell for the professional solutions. Like a pci-e option in iMacs or sOmething totally different.

But please don't abandon the apple platform too early! Still lots Of people liking it enough to stick with it.

Now you getting me worry, and problem is I'm always missing dead lines cause I don't have an editing system, NO MORE... I need a Super Tower with 2 RR now... So if a new MAC pro does not show up, I really need to buy the current one and beef it up, or seriously hit S&^$# and look on to a PC Tower for Editing, and the worst is I'll have no idea were to start...

It's not a bad idea, a PC tower just for transcoding and editing, iMac for personal use... Hmmm ... Interesting.

oh-oh you really gave up on apple though I can't blame you. it's getting tougher and tougher to stick with it.

I just tried to get an ad-hoc connection to work on windows with a pc guy. oh man.... here's what I really love about apple: it just works

Agree Patrick.. Apple is easier. you really can't argue that. Just like driving a minivan is easier than driving a ferrari. It all depends what you need to do. For power.. you can buy PC with 60 CPU cores with 2 ninja GPUs locked together right now for $6000... with a tremendous amount of power. More power.. but a pain in the ass, although once you are in Adobe or RCX or whatever program its pretty transparent, everything just is much faster.

Same with the iphone.. great bit of tech. easy to use. My grandma even has one now. I got a Galaxy note about a month ago. It is not easier.. its more difficult. But it is so much better in everything else, Except for usability. So you need to choose your tool. Historically professional tools are better, not easier. That's changed a bit.. but still holds the same thread.

Laptop wise.. Apple still makes the best laptops period.. competition is heating up. but they still win in terms of size/weight and performance.

Now what would be really cool is if Apple one day just sold the OS unlocked to any hardware like windows.. then they would rule the world.

Did you read the Jobs Bio?

Maybe things are more likely to change over time now with Steve not personally amongst us anymore "protecting" his company…
But even with that option on the horizon -> there are too many things that speak against it, won't happen too soon if they really care about the "Apple DNA" stuff if you ask me… a least it will take some time.

I still love them, can't stand windows PC's…
It's a shame they are focussing so much on the whole i*younameit*-thing and keep the professional market waiting.

As for the USB3 station; sure nice to have - we have about every choice now…
Are you guy's considering an updated "full size" station also (I think it has to come at some point after all these mini updates)?

I guess I could see, if and only if, comes to it, get a Super PC station only to run RCX-PRO/ADOBE and what ever programs for the 5k Epic footage, all else on MAC.

Hehehe, mean comparisons but true! Mostly Some time ago, the MacPros really kicked ass AND were easy to use. I wish that would come back soon! I was thinking about getting a new samsung instead of the 4S but I just love apple for home use and how everything is connected fast, easy and stable. but for the pro use, it's getting harder and harder. for design it's still alright, because you can work nicely on the power of a laptop. but as soon as you get into editing, rendering and post it starts being annoying.

Actually I believe both can be true. Power and Usability can coexist. Just at the moment it doesn't exist. What I would love to have is an open source os derived from unix with the usability and stability of os x. sigh! can't have everything I guess. But here's to hoping as you said, that they would open up to everyone for os x.... but I guess that'll never be... who knows what will happen in the post-jobs era.
