  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION 1.8" and 2.5"

The REDmag look awesome... but 2 years ago we bougth REDdrive 900$ for 640gb.

It is my understanding that you will still be able use those on the EPIC/SCARLET, just with limited data rates.

Comparing a HDD to a SDD in terms of just price would be like comparing a Cessna to a Nighthawk Stealth.

More like comparing a Cessna 150 to a Cessna Citation X. :001_cool:

I was reading through the 2.5" REDMAG portion of the manual in anticipation of purchasing and ran across this:

This is a bit concerning to me - I was looking forward to using some older drives that I have laying around, as well as some other drives not listed (the Seagate 640GB drive, the WD 1TB drive, and some of the SSD 2.5" drives come immediately to mind).

I'm just curious to see if anyone knows what the reasoning is behind those limitations? Are those just the drives that have been tested to work at RED HQ? Should I expect most other drives to work? Or should I really only expect those drives to be compatible?

I was planning on using this as a pretty generic 2.5" reader, but if it's only going to work with a few select drives...

Also, I found one statement regarding voiding the warranty, but didn't see anything about the terms and/or length of the warranty. Is that information posted up elsewhere?

Thanks Brent. Hugely helpful!

If anyone has any other answers, I'd appreciate it.

Michael, generally with approved devices lists, the items on the list are the only ones the manufacturer has actually tested with a pass mark. Although a "not approved" list would no doubt be handy (those tested and failed), for obvious reasons a manufacture is generally not going to publish that. So, if your device isn't on the list it may or may not mean it will work. What it most certainly will mean, however, is that if it doesn't, don't expect anyone at Red to help you sort it. They'll point you to the list - there's only so much they can do.

Personally, if I'm backing up my footage, I want the best, newest drives I can get. Not an area to be saving money for mine.

Thanks for the response - that's what I figured.

And the idea of using the newest and best is something I absolutely agree with. To wit, I'd like to use some newer/larger drives that aren't on that specific list. I do have some older drives with data already on them that I would like to migrate to NAS, and I was hoping this would make a very simply solution for doing so. I'm betting it'll work like a gem.

Dynamic Duo... This is the first time any of you have seen the new machined SSD mags as well:

Note the new lip at the end of the card for grip with a direct negative on the reverse to allow for staking.

Please oh please tell me there's a write-protect tab on there somewhere, and it's just not visible in the image...

I came across this in the RED Station manual on RED.com

"IMPORTANT: ONLY Silicon Image or Highpoint SATA cards will connect to RED STATION modules through eSATA at this time."

Anyone have any experience of connecting via other cards? Sonnet for example. I'm assuming that this situation is the same as that for the list of approved drives discussed earlier in the thread, ie these are the only cards tested so far.
Apologies if this has already been covered, couldn't find it.

I've used the RED CF reader and the Sonnet Tempo Sata Pro Expresscard|34 together and they work fine.

Thanks for that. Nice to know, as I have a Sonnet card on the way.

Also would like to know if the modules will connect to eSATA motherboard connectors?

Bump... any thoughts?

I'll second that.

And would people care for a database or resource of SATA cards and/or media that have been shown to work with RED STATION? I have half a mind to make one just for my own use...the more the merrier, of course.

Any word on if the 2.5" unit will support thicker 12mm drives like the 1TB 2.5" from WD?

Yes indeed.. Me and Jim both have been using the WD 12.5mm 1TB 2.5" drives daily for months now in the 2.5" REDSTATION
