  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Describe "wicked" for us, will you? :-) Seriously, cannot wait to see or hear how much faster it is with the card.

The boys are tweaking and optimizing everything. Currently, 4k rendered to 2k and output to DPX is about 31fps.

So when can we expect a nice 4K display to go along with these cards??? Hate to say it, but I'm not real impressed with the offerings currently on the market, especially at their current price points. Best one I've seen with my eyes has been the quad-HD Samsung 52" LCD, but I don't know if they've ever put that unit into production or not.

...Just thought I'd ask. Mark L. Pederson says not having a 4K monitor with this card is torture. I'm sure I'll agree. :)

All is good time... right now, it is a great luxury to see Full and 1/2 HQ play realtime on my 30" display and transcode/output at "rocket-speed". New 4K displays will slowly hit the market starting pretty soon. I think all the display guys are waiting for a good reason to begin production. RED Rocket and REDray will be good motivating factors.

If they can put out professional quality 4K displays for under $20K, I suspect they will sell quite a few. How far along is OLED technology in terms of 4K resolution and size of display? Are we on the verge of getting flat panel displays with pristine color and true, rich black levels at 4K resolution? I've been out of the loop on the most recent developments of this technology.

More boards out this week. Still fine-tuning the app.

Sure is nice seeing realtime HQ playback and wicked fast transcodes... :-)

Sounds great, thanks Jim! I'm trying to be very patient :001_rolleyes:

Excellent news ... what apps are working with the Rocket now?

Well, I got my email from Brian, so I guess these are indeed shipping. FWIW, I ordered within hours of it going up in the store.

Looking forward to it.

For Mark there are 4K projectors ;-)

Nowhere, at least not with OLED. And don't foget they try to sell LCD as long as we buy it. When sales fall off, only then we will see new, exciting technology. Guess generation 10-12, now we are LCD generation 7.

Got my email, my order is confirmed and going out today or tomorrow!

Thanks Brian, thanks Justin for looking after my order! And thanks to the whole development team for making it happen!

I ordered the moment it went live in the store. Hit refresh about 1000 times.

At the moment I'm only after Red Alert transcodes but will be happy to see others come online over time.

Just a quick question please (sorry if this has been covered) will the Red Breakout box allow output to a HD Cam or D5 Deck and what format/s would this take ? i.e. can you export 720/1080 and 2K ?

I was also wondering if Rocket will do away with the need for a card such as the Kona 3 for those only working with Red footage.

Thanks

Uh, yes it can. Unfortunately it's not friendly to 3K and it halves 4K to 2K... :ack2: I know it pulls in the R3D files via L&T and "wraps" them, but it's still the native R3D files

Not anymore, new version of Final Cut Pro supports 4K. Yeah!

Project sizes up to 4K (4K resolution requires a graphics card with 256MB of VRAM or more)

Does REDRocket accelerate the new Color into 4k realtime? If so...awesome. If not, why not?

Well, we got ours. It's accelerating nothing right now.

RED has to get the drivers up on their site or it won't work. But right now, I have a cool green piece of plastic. :-)

It will as soon as Apple incorporates support for the card... That's right Apple, I'm looking at YOU! It would be nice if you, Apple, could make this happen sometime before the end of THIS YEAR.

Even when Apple supports the card with Color, I wouldn't expect super-speedy renders. It doesn't do super-speedy renders on any other formats right now and I wouldn't expect that the RED Rocket™ will change that significantly. I hope so, but I'm skeptical.

This is the $1M question for sure. Because if t does, then what does that mean for Scratch? Quantel? Speed Grade, Mistika, DVS Clipster, i.e. $100K plus solutions?

Color grading is not as much as a "mystery" as it once was. This doesnt mean anyone can color, i.e the paper and pencil analogy... just because its readily available, doesn't mean everyone can draw.

But it does make justifying system costs a lot more difficult, as well as trying to recoup investment, especially when you have say a Scratch system and some dude in his house is bidding against you with MAC PRO and COLOR and RR.

Graeme said the RR will enable all workflows from the high end down the line. but it ALSO seems to be narrowing that gap.

Thoughts?

About color:

Correct me if I an wrong:
Redrocket is just R3D decoding, nothing to with the layers of grading...
Color can't even have realtime grading using DPX...
Dpx playback is the easiest thing, require just a raid and not big CPU power...
Color is missing the fact that is not builth to use GPU power from quadro card...

So I guess that if color will integrate RR,the R3D playback will be realtime until you start grade....like DPX

Am I wrong?

I would like to think that SCRATCH will support the RED Rocket™ real soon. In fact, I think I remember some comment about it already running on the Rocket hardware a few weeks back. If SCRATCH does go this route, allowing for the use of the RED Rocket™ instead of the Quadro SDI, perhaps we could hope for a Mac version of SCRATCH???

Not necessarily so. The card has the ability to do real-time (or faster) full quality debayer from 4K. There is no reason that the images derived from this can't be loaded into a common frame buffer or even offloaded to a GPU for other color transformations or grading operations. It ultimately comes down to how functional and flexible the SDK is and how developers choose to incorporate the power of the RED Rocket™ into their applications.
