  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Roadmap...

My guess: Red One revamped with new boards turns into Epic-S

I don't think they will be staying with the Red One platform much longer. The MX upgrade was a temporary fix till the Epics arrived, upgrading the Red One at this point forward is probably too costly. They probably want to move the entire product line into DSMC asap. The Epic-S or whatever it will be called will likely be the replacement for the the Red One. Why make two different styles of accessories? Heck, they might as well name it the Red Two. The projected price increases might bring it up to original Red One pricing territory anyway.

Maybe. We can probably assume that Dragon is a 6K sensor, but that does not mean it's FF35, nor that it's 3:2 aspect ratio. Those factors are key to the FF35 camera, aka the "IMAX Killer".

When at NAB 2011 I spoke to Jim, Dragon was a sensor upgrade to Epic-x owners (M I presume) giving greater latitude (13 stops?)at S35mm format (not full frame)
Corect me if I am wrong, but it's what I understood.

Edit:
Dragon program was really underrated to my opinion... unless it's freaking expensive ( I doubt:)

Yeah the genius of the DSMC system is that they can make one batch of modules/accessories for Epic-M/X, Epic-S and Scarlet. Economy of scale means they are much cheaper than if each camera needed it's own accessories.

The RED One is fantastic as is but I doubt they want to continue making more.

I'd be careful about adding timelines like that - to the casual observer, it's going to look like Jim wrote those dates himself.

The RED ONE is a DSMC.

The Red One takes stills? I'm taking about the overall modular design. Makes no sense to keep the Red One going forward. Yeah, it'll be supported, but it's pretty much EOL.

Doesn't make sense. The Red One already costs $25K. Designing boards to fit R1 and installing them will add to that cost. Plus the MX chip in the R1 doesn't run at 5K, does it? So unless Red is willing to sell the S-ified R1 at much less than $25K, then it will be a relatively unattractive offering now that Epic-X is shipping. The Scarlet S35 was what, $7.5K (or was it $9K). Then Red says, "We're moving it to the more robust Epic platform," but says its price will go up, probably to $12-15K. Well, OK. But if Red said, "We're moving to the first-generation Red One platform, and it won't be as modular, and it might not do 5K, but it will now cost nearly twice the Epic-platform version and three times the Scarlet-platform version," eh, it might be a hard sell. Could they sell such a camera for half that amount -- say $12K -- and still make a reasonable per-unit profit? Maybe, but I don't see how. I thought the R1 was expensive to build and that cheaper, more automated assembly was one advantage the Epic and Scarlet lines had. Didn't they raise the R1's price to cover the cost of the MX sensor?

Red one reworked just doesn't make sense. I for one would not consider purchasing somthing like that, it's a step backwards in many ways

Good catch, Terry. Michael, quote should be a quote. Not your interpretation imbedded in one. Can you edit your post to clarify?

And you can bet that RED will have surprises before 7373.

If Scarlet gets the same kind of support and upgrade path from RED as the EPIC line, I'm all in.

I like your title Elsie. ( Omniographer):thumbup1:
Thanks David,

In my opinion, anyone using a DSMC could consider it for their title as well. It is the best term I personally can think of to describe anyone using a camera that shoots everything.

EPIC-M- shipping

Monstro 645 DSMC

Monstro 617 DSMC

Surprise #2

Notice that it says 'Scarlet' and not 'ScarletS' og 'Scarlet Fixed' or 'Interchangable.' The Epic's are both written precicely with their following letter. Just something to think about.

Hi Red land.

I have a suggestion. I come to the movie/vid world from a different angle, landscape still photography. I am about to take on movie production as well.
With the still prints I sell the biggest file with the most pixels I can get is king. There are guys in my industry that stitch together huge files to create massive files to print from. The final quality is outstanding and cannot be matched by any of the top shelf dslr's.

If red already has the huge sensor and you put high quality optics in front and can produce a 60/80 meg (and up) raw print file then this creates a very valuable tool that produces both of my outputs. I am not sure current situation but food for thought.

The roadmap is the roadmap. If it changes, it changes.
Just let them do what they are doing for the moment. RED is doing fine.
We wait...
Just keep an eye on Recon and when the post something, we read it and then we know. Before that we just wait... and hope for the best. Because we only want the best, and RED is building it for us. Just wait...

I believe what you're looking for is Monstro 645/617, which will probably show up when we least expect it. They are Digital Stills and Motion Cameras (DSMCs), just like EPIC and Scarlet, with view camera sized image sensors. I seem to remember they were talking about 120 megapixel images, so their planned specs already exceed your dream specs :).

They will be mind-bendingly expensive, but then again, so is a Hasselblad. And the amount of processing power needed to handle the images, let alone video, is mind-boggling.

Unfortunately it's likely to take a few years before we see one, but this is definitely coming from RED if you can afford the extremely expensive cameras and probably just as expensive multi-terabyte memory cards :(. I vaguely remember an early road map with pricing around $90k, but that is very much subject to change and it's likely to be even higher than that when produced.

Pretty much any price for something like this is going to be a bargain, truthfully, and the only real question is whether we will have computers capable of handling the R3D files. Apple and Intel are going to have to work pretty hard in the next few years if they want to be compatible with Jim's dream!

As I look through 20 pages of wild speculation by both the RED true believers and cautiously optimistic, the faithful and the doubters...something has become clearer that I think is worth mentioning.

Yes, being kept in the dark is nerve racking and frustrating and makes you anxious because you don't know what to expect.

But, now you have that in common with Sony, Arri, Panasonic and every other company that's waiting to see what RED does next...and THAT was the point of holding back announcements until products are ready to ship. It keeps you guessing and as you can see, it works.

Now, this may lead to some unfortunate hand wringing and "suffering" on our parts but the difference between us and those companies is, when those products are finally announced, WE'LL win in the end.

would suck if RED ONE is recycled to form EPIC-S as you need much more expensive accessories and grip to shoot with R1, making the cheaper S option more expensive than X to shoot with. seems illogical for crowds trying to stretch their money.

If S is gonna be reincarnated, just a small box that shoots 24/25p 5k maybe 2k 120p would be ideal for most looking at EPIC S; i hope frills are cut instead of essential compression ratios and resolution, if it needs scaling back in ambition.

but the comfort i find is the delays if anything will have helped S and scarlet, from technologys' natural progression over the years since their conception.
