  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED RAVEN! RED RAVEN! RED RAVEN!

If it is a 'new sensor' could it be a Vista Vision sized sensor, that has larger pixels and is 4K?

or is that just crazy talk?

Based on what I see I'd guess it's a MFT 4K sensor with RedCode and ProRes. Basically DJI's new 4k drone camera is a Red sensor with RedCode? Fixed lense, MFT just needs one and minimag for ProRes so you dont need moster computer = 4K4A

Also, some were previously thinking plastic, but this looking more aluminum for sure.

Yeah, if you compare to the 4.7" Aluminum LCD, it seems to match up:

RED Raven almost certainly uses a Dragon sensor. Its appears to be part of the Weapon "family", in form and most likely function (though more limited).

It makes sense that DJI's new camera is in fact using a Dragon sensor. A 4K cut of it, that should have the size of a M4/3 sensor, if so RED's new camera should be the "ground" version of it, maybe with a little better specs (better frame rates, better compression)

If RED's new camera has in fact a 4K Dragon sensor, I think it should offer a M4/3 mounth version, so people could use it with any lens they wanted, and also coupled with a speedbooster. Maybe they will release two versions of it, like Black Magic does.

Well, Ravens fly - so I think the notion of a unit targeted at the Drone market is probably where this will end up. Pretty much sure that's the basis of Jarred's name choice.

I suspect an all-in one unit (sidewinder style control interface and maybe with an additional small review monitor) - sort of a Red Go-Pro :)

Think it'll be fixed lens too... essentially (if it's price is right), it's the camera we'll all buy as a drone/b-camera/action cam... knowing that we don't have any issues with different production pipes (as we're still n RAW). A little like the the way Arri designed the Alexa mini in order to pick at the use of Red's as B-Cams/drone units.

So, my best guess:

- All in one control (sidewinder panel) with a small LCD for reviewing (so, no need for monitoring solutions).
- Optional extras (like a wifi or video sender - which would make sense fo using the Weapon system as a base, as it's already part of the specs).
- Raw (maybe proxies too).
- Fixed lens (ala Go-Pro and others)

If the price is cheap, the Raven will 'fly' off the shelves... ahem! LOL

I don't think theres any suggestion DJI is using a Dragon Sensor. If that were true, I'm sure it would be more advertised. Also as others have noted, the DJI records Cinema DNG, not redcode. And has 12.8 stops DR, which doesn't in line with Dragon DR.

We've seen a fixed EOS mount, so not sure it would be fixed lens.

But think you are right about "Raven" and "flying" being related.

This may indeed be geared towards both indie and drone markets.

This camera is certainly targeted at drone, gimbal market. But just as with Alexa Mini it won't prevent people from using it as a regular A or B cam.

I wish RED would mirror Mini's specs 1:1 (framerates, resolutions, codecs) but for $10K. That'll be trolling lvl 1000

Yes, thinking about it, that makes more sense. But it would be an interesting partnership between RED and DJi if it were true. That would be a good way RED could ensure that more people would be using a RED camera and thus, creating a RED ecosystem in therms of sensor, workflow and overall image look.

True, but Dragon is a sensor, and Raven is a camera. Just saying. But you may be right too - never considered that both Dragons and Ravens "have wings" and "can fly".

For now I'm in the Raven is a sensor camp... the Vista cut of Dragon gets it's own name. Remember the Weapon announcements; Vista Weapon would come near the end of the year.

I have recently been thinking that it would be a nice time for us independents to get some of the love again, but I'm not holding my breath or anything. ;-) I have not however been following the latest buzz. Looks like it is time for me to catch up on the news.

This is going to be a part of the DSMC 2.0 (weapon style) family. Here's what the future lineup will be.

8k VV Weapon
6k Weapon
4k Raven

The unfortunate thing is 4k will be MFT crop.
The Raven will probably be focused towards FLYING !

I still think Raven is 5K/S35 at 30.

Can't see RED abandoning S35, or releasing a camera that's only 4K. Doesn't seem in their DNA.
