I think this is really the future of RED we have been waiting for. I love my Gemini and I used my Raven until the day it kicked but this seems like such an amazing advancement in technology that I would love to discuss the Raptor and what it means for the future of RED and the DSMC3 series of cameras!

Sincerely,
Clayton Burns

I'm thinking of ordering one, but can I order it in black? These white cameras are ridiculous, easily giving you away on reflective surfaces.

yeah, I'd assume it would be black after this white (stormtrooper) limited production run.

For starters, like the Monstro, the Raptor offers both 8K VV and 6K S35 targets. If you absolutely have to have 8K with a S35 lens, there are relay optics available - or Helium.

RED has clearly chosen a different path than BMD by sticking with standard Bayer masking and larger photo sites. Reminds me of the CISC vs RISC era with CPUs.

I wonder how good is the V-RAPTOR in low-light compared to something like the GEMINI - Could be a game changer.

I want to buy this Raptor thing. But then also 7 days from now DJI will release that chicken head camera which I guess also will be 8k FF which I'm sure will be a complete game changer. Built in gimbal, 3D focus etc. And I dont want to get rid of my Monstro or Komodo. It worries me that I am even thinking of hoarding them all. What have I become, some sort of crazy camera collector geek. I did not see it coming. lol.

Film background here. 5 microns, wrote about it extensively when doing those old Dragon versus film tests for myself, others, and studios. Born of Dragon. Grew up into a Monstro. Transformed (like Marvel gamma ray mutation) into a V-Raptor. It's a very, very good pixel size that's rather enticing for those looking for a film alternative/replacement. i.e. Resolution and Format Relevance compared to motion picture film.

Super 16, Super 35, and VistaVision in one camera with a film-like familiarity on how that draws or looks. More detailed now these days, but it's a sensible move.

What's the exact shipment date for this camera if we order it right now?

Dont know, I think I read that the ST once are made / ready to ship. But on the web page it says 4 weeks for the camera and monitor if Im not mistaken.

Then DJI have their announcement 08/09 2PM GMT+1 Likely thats the chicken head thingy.

V-RAPTOR ST 8K up to 800 MB/s why its limited to 800MB/s ?? I know CFexpress cards can make up to 1400-1500MB/s

Could be a limit by either 1) the CPU or it could be that they want to ensure write capabilities on the card. If you use say pre-record those poor card will have a very tough day.

Why do you want to generate more than 800MB/s of data to deal with? Do you own shares in a storage vendor? While there may be corner cases where you could actually utilize more than that, I would consider that the realm of specialty cameras - which, BTW, would likely have to be bigger and heavier to manage heat. As a reference - 24 FPS, 800MB/s is 30MBs per frame of 32MP, 16 bit RAW. Seems like a lot to me...

The live stream was classic RED. So much to unpack. Was nice to see Phil's test footy. Even with the tragic YouTube compression, it showed some impressive DR.

Yep. It's still converted to 4K and 8K, but what I can say is the dynamic range is rather amazing. The first set I kept some pretty deep shadows in there through highlights that didn't clip. A few of the sparks go over the top at some point, but this thing has a lot of DR. And it's noticeably different down low too. Combination between the sensor tech and new OLPF I think. Really, really good color too. I need to carve out some time to do my regular tests once I can get a camera back in my hands. But she's a powerful machine.

Burst versus sustained, raw data (not our type) versus a formatted media card.

I've been testing CFx for a hot minute due to the R5 entering my life. Can't speak for every card on the market, but most are 900MB/s sustained or lower, some floating in the 600MB/s world. And things tail off at higher capacities and over time.

I think that's why RED is tapping Angelbird for this new media. Those were the cards I used when I got to film with it.

Does the Raptor work with the Latitude Sidekick for Canon EF lens control via wireless FF? Dearly missed on Komodo for gimbal work.

Absolutely loving all the little accessories they showed off in the livestream. Audio breakout and all that stuff looks fantastic. Rather than have big bulky XLRs built into body having them available in a high quality way wherever you would like on your rig is awesome. Especially for setups where you want audio recording nearby but not necessarily mounted directly to the camera. Will be interesting to see the quality of audio recorded directly into camera through that AUDIO port.

I think it is underappreciated that Red cameras actually DO crop down on the sensor for different formats. And provide enough resolution to film very high quality at any of those formats. It's all well and good if you can film S35 6k on a S35 12k sensor, but the only benefit that will ever give you is storage space, which is much less of a concern these days. RF mount and awesome cropped formats means this camera can be used with pretty much any lens in the world. Sometimes a massive sensor format isn't going to support the look or lenses you might want to use for a project.
