  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED PRO Mattebox

Yeah, I have to say, I just bought a mattebox, and would have gone Red if there was some sort of rod support. I have precisely 0 lenses with an appropriate clamp-on diameter for it and a ton of stills glass.
 
hi folks, maybe a stupid question, but anywhere:
how to use polarizing filter on a mattebox without rotating stages?
are there special polarizers available for this case ?
any ideas or suggestions ?

another question: what about vignetting if used with the rpz 18-85? the 18-85 is 144 mm, and the rotating filter is about 120 mm ?

As far as the 95mm RED PRO MATTE BOC Ring, its a life saver for our UP's and our LEICE Cine Primes to be, next as we go more location scouting in areas were we can't bring the camera, I'll show you were and how I'm also using the MB in ways it hasn't ever been used before... ;)

Well, I must say that the RED PRO MB is fast becoming my most favorite MB ever, and if RED was to be able to make a SWING AWA, and a 138mm Rotating Tray for my ABSOLUTE MUST always HAVE 138mm Circular Polarizer, then the other MB will only be used on lenses I can't put the RED PRO MB.

For now I'm using a 4x5 Circular Polarizer, non-rotating... :(

Yes, The RMBP will be our primary mattbox aswell. Now when using the Hawks with spinning fronts we really would like the swingaway, we got the rodmount and it works but using lens suport and the sliding rod mount makes lens changes a bit complicated/slow. Also I would love if we could get a nice peli case for all the RMBP stuff, with laser cut foam and all that would custom fit all items possible to buy for the system.... And also please, please add some nice soft rubber donuts that fits into the quicklock.
 
Objectively, I have to say the RMB is really nice, but it's so bulky!!! Personally, in my new "light weight" life, I sold my MB-20 after 3 years of awesome intense use (as well as my FF-4), and got the new MB-2, and WOW! Light and awesome, especially in clip-on mode... And TINY!!! It's also got a rotating stage, and the really clever thing is the extra handles you can attach to it... I know Christopher Doyle must be ecstatic!!! :D

The RMB is awesome in the league of MB-20 and other MBs of equivalent size (light to heavy studio use I'd say), but if you want to go light and small, it's way too big (for me). I strongly recommend for those who haven't seen it in the real to get one in your hands before making a purchase decision. I was about to get it and went to a friend of mine to check it out and wow! It's huge! BUT it's a kick ass MB for sure and I can tell because I used it a lot! Sturdy, well engineered (like all Red's stuff) and a great piece of gear to own (for an awesome price!)...
 
Is there a 4x4 tray for this? Or for those of you who have this, have you tried using a 4x4 filter on the existing tray?

wondering this myself as i have 4 4x4 filters
 
I wish they would make a 15mm offset rail adapter for this. It's great as a clip-on and great for a 19mm setup on rods, but what about all of us that are forced to use a 15mm offset rod setup? I've had to rent spray deflectors quite often for camera car work and I'm always tearing down my 19mm setup and switching to a 15mm offset baseplate (Elements) in order to run a spray deflector. That's all fine and great, but when the roads are dry and the sun comes out, we need to quickly pull off the spray deflector and put on a matte box. I don't like to use my Red Matte box as just a clip-on when it's full of 3 filters (clear, ND and Pola) on a camera car, so now I'm going to be forced to sell it and get an Arri which has 15mm offset or 19mm rod adapters, or find someone to custom machine a rod adapter for me. Thoughts? Red will you make this part that so many of my colleagues need? Thanks.

Thanks Luis, I checked their site, but I didn't see anything that would adapt a Red matte box to a 15mm studio rod setup. They do have options for 15mm lightweight. Thanks anyway, I really appreciate it and maybe I'll contact Ryan and see if they can do a custom order.
