  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED PRO Mattebox

We are starting to get pretty good at our shipping predictions...

heh heh heh.

OK, I ordered the cage and side flags... Cage makes them kinda pricey!

Price caught my breath a little too; based on the cost of the MB and top/bottom flags I'd guesstimated maybe a couple hundred bucks for the side flags and a couple hundred more, tops, for the bracketry to attach them.

If I could could buy just the bottom flag bracket now and side flags a little later, I'd do that, but it isn't available as a separate piece; I have to buy the whole caboodle just to attach the bottom flag I already bought months ago.

So do I bite the bullet and spend an unplanned $750 right now? Or wait a few weeks until my current documentary project results in a check - and risk another five month backorder wait? I know, I know, some people are never satisfied!

Ah, still, it's nice to have to make the decision - looks very neat :-)

Hi Mike, $750 isnt peanuts to be sure. Butt, $750 for what looks like a relatively complicated cage and wings is pretty reasonable. Check out the Arri MB prices for something similar and you will appreciate what Red is offering.

Yeah, most of the cost is probably in the cage pieces. And last time I checked, the official ARRI side flags for an MB-20, or even the "cheap" MMB-1, are around $400 each.

Will the cage/frame be essential further down the line for swing away/ rail mounting, or the rotating stages? Or can I expect those yet-to-arrive parts to work with my matte box as it is right now?

Sorry if this has been addressed (I tried doing some searching, honest!). . . But has anyone (including RED) created a step down feature (specifically looking for 80mm here)?

Here is a super newbie question...

Where is a good place to buy filters for use in the Red Pro Mattebox?
What are the basic set of filters one would want?

I've never used a mattebox before but want to do things right.

All depends what you're looking to achieve with the matte box.

Schneider do a 'starter kit' of essentials, marketed specifically at RED owners, which contains a basic set of NDs, plus a hot mirror:

Useful saving on buying them individually.

This might be a better topic for the cinematography forum...

Schneiders, definitely my BEST pic... PM me and I'll direct you to some great Discount Deals on them... ;)

Since I know this is such a quiet time for you guys I thought I'd ask... any signs of the frequently requested 19mm swing-away mount, rotating stage, and additional sizes of clip-on rings...? They were all said to be in the pipeline back in January.... http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?54593-RED-PRO-Mattebox&p=715875&viewfull=1#post715875 oh and... http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?54593-RED-PRO-Mattebox&p=723639&viewfull=1#post723639

For the record, I've been giving my MB a good hammering since I received it, and it totally rocks!! Just need the rings, and/or swing-away + donut, so I can use it on a greater variety of glass!

Thanks

Mike

+1 on that. Got a Red Pro Mattebox sitting on the shelf so long it's got cobwebs growing on it. Is it possible to get a confirmation on rods support and rotating section is actually in the pipeline or it has slipped off the radar? Odd thing I saw a Red Mattebox mounted on rods on a Red video many months ago. Not hassling just asking :-)

soon.. sorry guys for the lack of info. We had a small problem with the carbon fiber process that we had to resolve over the last couple weeks... we are out of that next week and hope to start shipping them again the week after. 95mm rings are still coming.. prototypes are being tested in the field.

What about rings (80mm and 95mm) now?

The Mattebox accessories is surely one of the stranger stories from Red. Building a rod mount and some new rings is surely a simple job yet somehow has been lost in the system. I understand a rotating filter section is tougher but still not "rocket science". Its been over a year and I am unsure if Red are pursuing this anymore therefore I am going with an alternate and complete solution. My Red Mattebox is for sale only ever used once.

I am also frustrated by the lack of rod support for the Red Mattebox. Even more so when I watch the Quick Release tutorials and there is a rod-mounted Red Mattebox featured in the video. Don't know what the adaptor piece is but I sure would like one.
