  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE / DSMC 1 upgrade program finally has an end date.

I bought my Epic MX new in 2014. Now it can't be repaired any longer? That seems like a bad deal for those who don't want to ride the DSMC2 railroad. Way too much of an investment to have it be obsolete in three years.
 
If I am reading this correctly, this implies that Dsmc2 ecosystem will remain for quite a while going forward, I am right?
Speaking of which, the idea of sensor swap is fantastic. But how about logistics, is it foreseen that this can be done through certified local Red dealer? I mean for those of us outside the US, shipping back and forth to Irvine is costly and time consuming.

But all in all, great news - for Dsmc2 owners at least.

Will it be interchangeable with other dmsc2 body sensors?

Jarred if I understand it correctly I can switch to for example 6K Dragon sensor but the brain and internals will remain the same so with Scarlet-W I'll get lets say 6K at 30fps max? Is that right?

Hear! Hear! I was shocked to read this yesterday. To think that in three shorts months, after October 2017, I might re-boot my Epic-X to suddenly to find that a company I've been with so loyal to since 2008 won't repair my 3-year old camera any longer is just too disheartening to fathom.
 
NEW SENSORS!! :party: I imagine there will be a lower res one but with hyper Dynamic Range, gazillion colors and ultra night vision lowlight monster!!

Hey Joe, we will fix it if we have the parts still available.. but we can't if we don't. It's not really a decision of ours, we can no longer source most of the components used on the boards of the M and MX cameras, not only sensors, but memory and other electrical components that we buy from other companies actually stopped being manufactured many years ago.

Scarlet-W is the cheaper upgrade path to get into DSMC-2, $12,500 for each body and you get to keep your old camera, which you could ebay which should get back enough cash to cover of most of the new modules and media.
 
Jarred if you guys were using obsolete components in cameras that were sold new in 2014, you should have advised customers of that fact. This isn't a DSLR body that can be tossed without much pain, for many it was a major investment. The difference in support windows between One and MX is huge.

Jarred, first of all, thank you for giving us the opportunity to upgrade our cameras. About selling scarlet mx on eBay, I don’t think someone would invest on a product that is obsolete. So the only path ( which I know is amazing ) is going to Epic W Helium, Red effectively taking my scarlet for $10k, same as when I bought it, since the Epic Helium is worth almost $30k and I would pay $20k for the upgrade. The thing is that for international users, most of us have to deal with horrible costums and pay more than 50% taxes, so this adds up a lot, that’s why I was wondering if you took our scarlet mx to scarlet W upgrade. I understand that scarlet w probably doesn’t have too much margin so you can’t give us too much flexibility, but maybe I am hopping I am wrong . Anyhow, the great thing is that there is a lot of options! Thanks
 
While you're still here, Jarred (maybe) - will Scarlet-W be capable of handling a Helium sensor at some point? Will we be able to do the sensor-switch thing?
 
Will the sensors be linked to a particular camera body or will owner ops be able to rent their helium sensors to other ops while they are shooting dragon, or vice versa? Would b nice to know I could rent sensors to other Redusers while I'm not using them, making more financial sense to own more than one sensor.

Not speaking for Jarred, but my best guess is yes it's linked to "your camera body". Meaning you can't send somebody else's camera in for the sensor upgrade/swap. I can see way to many reasons in terms of liability for that rental model to break.

And just because I got a couple messages about it, read that first post carefully.

"You just buy the sensor, we will hold it for you. For a small labor fee you can send your DSMC2 (Starting with existing Weapon owners)."

You still pay for the new sensor, it's not just merely a pay for labor swap. That would be silly.

Thanks Jarred. That actually seems feasable.

However... I'll wait for July 6th to make any plans. :)

Understandable, but a big bummer. I have 2 DSMC2 cams and a 6K EPIC-M Dragon, which is relatively new. My hope was to drive it into the ground, like a little Toyota pick-up from the 1970s that I kept running until 2000. EPIC-M Dragon is a tank and still shoots beautiful images. Don't want to let it go. This presents quite the dilemma.....

I guess I'll see if it can give a 70s Toyota a run for the money....

Jarred stated DSMC1 with "M or MX" sensors. Not Dragon sensors
