  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE collectors...

Hey, I am not too sure but I think we were the first guys to officially import the Red One to India(2041). That makes my Red Priceless too :)

RED #1110 has had a somewhat exciting life, nothing really out of the ordinary. With one exception. It's been bolted to the underside of an F-22 Raptor. :) Other than that, it's gone rafting on the Colorado River and has chased several back-country skiers and snowboarders. I've been hoping to get some footage of an avalanche or two, but I'm not keen on getting that close to them myself when out in the wild and so far any scheduled slide triggering has either not aligned with my schedule or has turned out to be rather uneventful.

I wish I could show the F-22 footage, but I have no rights to it.

I've been trying to get consideration for sending my RED, or possibly an EPIC, on a space mission -- I have some contacts. I'd love to go myself, but I'm not an astronaut so that's that I guess. Although, with the retiring of the shuttle this year and upcoming down-time until the Ares project is complete, it's a tough sell. If anyone wants to send a RED to the ISS next year, you had better talk to the Russians.

just curious, cameras must be lubricated with Braycote lubricating grease which is approved for spaceflight, so would the RED need it's cooling fan altered or removed? Man, I'd sure love to see 4k projected footage from orbit though!

www.spacex.com ?

Haven't got as far as details and requirements such as that. Just been asking around, talking to some contacts I have. Some individual engineers are excited about the RED and other digital cinema cameras. Up until now, and even now still, NASA has a fixation on IMAX cameras.

I know I'm not the only one pursuing this. I've encountered some who mention others with their RED cameras and such, seen some pictures. I was at Kennedy Space Center in December and there was another RED One on-site then.

They don't fly people. Or at least not yet.

Lockheed has also submitted proposals to NASA for updated Saturn rockets modded for ISS docking and manned missions. ...I wonder if I'm supposed to say that, meh... Whatever. There's also some other potentials out there too. But for now, the only official channel to the ISS once the shuttle is grounded is through Russia.

Just as a slight aside/hijack...

There have been F900s taken onto the Space Shuttle for many years now. Most of that footage belongs to US taxpayers. Like many things in any government organization, you just gotta know where to ask.

US citizens that want HD footage from the Space Shuttle can have it if they are willing to fill out some forms, jump through some hoops, know where to ask, be patient, and pay for the cost of tape stock.

About 10 years ago, I received several hours of raw HD footage taken from a Space Shuttle porthole sent to me courtesy of NASA. Took me several months to get it, but I did get it... absolutely stunning stuff. Really, how can it not be?

This was before 9/11, so rules may have changed - but I kinda doubt it for this kind of footage.

Best,

Lucas

You would be hard pressed to point out a camera or lens that I don't have in my collection.

Jim

Do you have one of these?

Armadillo is the brainchild of a serious computer game programmer, and is on the forefront of private aerospace, they may be interested in setting up something.

Hmmm...I'm not sayin' one way or another :)

Your camera collection looks great! Thanks for preserving those pieces of photographic history. Just a thought...wouldn't it be cool if those cameras could talk and tell where they've been and what they've seen.

I bought my first DSLR in person in 1969 in Hong Kong - a Nikon F with a few Nikkor lenses. I still have it and pull it out to use occasionally on photo trips - just so I can keep my finger on the pulse of how the shooting of images first started for me.

BTW, thanks for that story about your dad and the SR71. During my 6 years in the Air Force I was an air traffic controller. The SR71 was easily my favorite plane in the Air Force arsenal. I was also an air traffic controller in the FAA for 6 years after my Air Force service.

That's awesome! I'm in the AF now as a vehicle operator. My "brother" and I are still in the pre-pre-pre-planning phase for a movie and are waiting for our chance at a couple REDs. then we're gonna !!

I'm curious if Red # 1830 is worth more ? It was the camera that shot the entire opening scene of Michael Jacksons "This is It". It was also the camera that was in the Michael Jackson and Kenny Ortega photograph (where Michael Jackson has his hand on the Red with no lens).

The fingerprints could make it valuable and any DNA left on it. Hope no one has touched it or wiped it down. I mean, some will buy a potato chip shaped as some religious figure. You just never know what you got till you put it on ebay.

Lol I can imagine ebay: "Red cam touched by Michael Jackson. Oh and it also shoots beautiful images but that's not important, IT WAS TOUCHED BY MJ!!!!!!!"

I believe it was Jarred that forwarded a pic of a Red bolted to some structure at a launchpad recording a rocket launcha while back...

So NASA has definitely seen 'em...

I think you're right about Jarred posting that picture. NASA has indeed seen the RED One, several of them.

As Lucas points out, the F900 has made it onto the shuttle on several occasions. So have other HD cameras. Someone will take a RED camera sooner rather than later.

It will be on something other than the shuttle. It is being retired this year, the next flight is the last.

red#0031 shot in the Space-X facility but we were not allowed to shoot the rockets, although in the wide's you can actually seem them, that place is bad ass (to borrow a term from jarred).

Still say there's more than one RED #0031.:skep:
