  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE collectors...

I see a few things there I've owned ( but no longer ).... Ti994a ( I had the RF modulator, speech synthisizer and expansion chassis interface with P card... I remember really wanting an Osborn.... and my first really big purchase, a Mac SE30 ( I got the apple loan in college to get it.. $3400! Loved hypercard! )

Good stuff!

Nice collection, Joe! I had a pretty big collection going for a while like that, but purged most of it a while back. Wife told me it had to go, and at the time the place we were living in was just too small to support it anyway. I did keep a few things that I was particularly fond of. Still have some stuff I'm looking to get rid of... Anyone want a SEGA Nomad system (handheld Genesis)? Pretty good shape, most of the original boxes, manuals. I fired it up just last week, thinking of putting it on ebay, but couldn't do it. ...I cleaned out a corner of the basement that has a bunch of old electronics stuff stacked up..

I see you have OS/2 I have unopened CPM OS and unopened CPM Assembler

Nice! A bit before my time, so I never had a chance to use it. I have never used OS/2 either, but I got it just because it was a major OS of the time and I got it on the inexpensive side. Got Windows 286 and 3.0, but still no 1.X. I once, years ago, had a bid on a sealed Windows 1.0 on eBay, but I missed out at the last seconds due to the dial-up I was using on Vacation. Never seen one since...

The TI99/4A was the first computer our family owned, so lot of good memories. I have 4 now. They can still be found on eBay in new condition on the cheap side.

I need a room 2 to 4 times as big to do what I really want. I am broke and out of room so I have not been buying much, but from time to time there is something I can't resist...

I have a room with a collection of old computers, video game systems, and video cameras.

I love it! much better than my in a box somewhere in the garage collection:glare: haha

You have to hand it to Jim, this thread is a perfect example of how great a marketing guy Jim is. To create a sense of percieved value above cost for your existing RED One (so you do not want to trade it in for Epic) is a great idea.

The idea: Your RED one is worth well more than the 17K you put in so hang on to it. Then buy an Epic. Make sure you have a low number on that one as well as it too will be collectible and worth more. Brilliant. Nothing like the company owner suggesting you should plunk down cash instead of trading it in to really enforce perceived value.

The reality is that no company really wants you to trade something for a newer model. Its a courtesy of course. If you can afford to keep your RED you should do so, but not as a collectible but as a B-Camera or for use. It is not a Lunar Hasselblad or the first Aaton ever made. There are no video cameras that are being collected that are worth anything close to what they sold for. Thats just a fact. History does have value, but not when you are above #20. Sorry.

Couldn't have done it better myself. Feel free to bash my opinion.

(full disclosure, I own over 250 motion picture cameras 8mm, Super 8, 16mm, S16, 35mm, and odd formats like 9.5mm as well as a slew of ancient video cameras. Most of them are not worth crap, but I do like them)

Bet you are kickin' yourself for not being an early adopter, aren't you?

That's one way to look at it... I guess. I have to say that I own quite a few cameras and they are worth something. The ones worth the most are usually associated with a few things (in no particular order):

1. Important event (Hasselblad space cameras are worth much more than standard production of the same model.

2. Owned and used by famous people or took milestone images.

3. Have a good story that goes with the camera.

4. Very desirable when in production. Out of production now.

5. Were game changing when released. Often the 1st model of, what turned out to be, an important company in its industry.

6. Low production quantities.

I've been collecting for many years... well before I started RED. I didn't make up the collecting story to discourage trade-ins. The above list usually relates to things other than cameras as well. I collect:

1. Cameras
2. Apple stuff (most valuable is a new in box original 1984 Macintosh).
3. Guitars
4. Highly engraved rifles from the cowboy era.
5. Currency from the 1800's
6. Misc. other stuff

We welcome your cameras in trade. I expect that any significant premium on RED ONEs is limited to some extent to the prototypes, sub-100 serial numbers and cameras used by famous Directors or on famous movies. That means that I am not speaking to the majority of RED ONE owners... which pretty much shoots down your theory... as lovely as it was.

Jim

Don't forget the one Michael Jackson touched (appropriately)

I wonder how much that new in box original 1984 Macintosh would fetch? I think I paid around $400 3 years ago for my used in nice condition, that does not work perfectly...

I have the Apple QuickTake 100, it is both Camera AND Apple :)

We’ve a mast quite the collection over the years, a couple items: (hmmm, maybe we should just hold onto all of our newer gear and sell it for more in 50 years…)

I wonder where the cameras that came ashore on D-Day are?

Those would be priceless, I imagine.
