  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE collectors...

Still say there's more than one RED #0031.:skep:

very funny, ask my wife and she will tell you the sad truth...problem with red#0031 is it is not scalable, so hence the 10 years i have aged in the last 2.5 years....

at least my boys can watch the footage someday and see where daddy was all those days. could not say that if i worked for an insurance company or law firm...

all you country fans ...shooting reba today! good times.

Your camera is the Simpsons of the camera world: "31 did it"

One thing that is for certain, every RED ONE is worth way more than what it costs.

it is to me!! :)

But dammit... the MX footage I'm seeing here is killing me. At 6022 it's going to be a while for me... I feel like the guy that's been dating a really hot chick for a few years and just found out her little sister is even hotter and better in bed!

Wait... that came out wrong...

Yeah Dino, sounds good!

Next week Red 0008, "London", Red 0019, and four other Reds are shooting Heart in concert in Seattle, then after that its those same cameras shooting Garth Brooks in Las Vegas (date TBD). As with Journey in Manila, both me and Blair will be the stage front shoulder held shooters. I'm also DP for the Heart gig, as I was for Journey. BTW, this week as we speak I'm on the coast of Chile shooting Peregrine Falcons being satellite tagged. I'm signing off now because tomorrow we're up early for five days of super-remote work here on the coast. Its 11:00p here in Chile...

Smorgasboord out there ain't it...and we love those multi-Red live music gigs!

RED History

RED History

Speaking of history, how about a history of sketches and renderings of all the RED cameras and accessory concepts? You know the pre-RED ONE cameras, the "in between" RED ONE and EPIC cameras, the evolution of the DSMC concept, and maybe even some roads not taken in terms of concepts.

Just something to keep us occupied until we get some more red meat from RED in the form of tests and feedback and of course footage.

Well, since we're talking country, RED 0089 shot Carrie Underwood 2 weeks ago with myself as director and Howard Newstate as DP. :-) It was shot at www.dfsla.com where my camera is also available for rent along with the lights, grip, and stages. Next week my company is shooting Randy Travis, but it's in Nashville and my camera is busy being upgraded to MX so Howard is shooting with a local RED camera.

There's my country bragging for you. :-)

Hey guys I also like the idea of buying into historic cameras and things. I found this on a local auction site here in New Zealand. Tell me what you guys think. Heres the link..

Collecting is fun (and dangerous). My best advice is:

1. Start by collecting what you like most... what you always wished you had. Forget trying to guess what will be valuable in the future or what someone else might think is valuable.

2. Wait and buy the best quality example you can find. Unless there were only a few made, condition is everything in collecting.

3. Take it slow. Unless you fall into a smokin' deal on something great that you have always wanted, restraint is a collector's best friend.

4. Collecting is secondary to using. Make sure you don't spend money on "stuff" at the expense of buying tools you use.

5. If you find yourself on ebay everyday and looking forward to the arrival of the next package in tomorrow's mail... get some therapy and counseling. Being addicted to Reduser is much cheaper and healthier than getting hooked on spending money. Learning is always better than going broke.

6. Always remember the golden rule. It is way easier to buy something than it is to sell it.

A few years ago, I was searching for a unique christmas present for Jim, and I came across some stupidly expensive "official moon dust" that came out of one of the film canisters that was used to shoot on the moon. I was so impressed with myself that I finally found (or so I thought) something camera related literally out of this world that Jim couldn't possibly have...

So christmas day comes.. he opens it.. and low and behold.. He had some of that moon dust already.... because he owned the very camera.

heh heh heh.

A total of almost 400 kilograms of samples were collected on the Moon and analysed on Earth. This sample which is older than 3.7 billion years is from the Mare Crisium.

If I'm at an antique store/mall or yard sale and I see an old ( 1950's or older ) camera for less than $10 I buy it.... at least to save it from a trash can. My 9 year old daughter loves the old leather Kodak ( number 2? ) camera cases and uses them as a purse.

Lately I've been on the hunt for old tripods and camera stands... fond a cool Thalhammer. Looks like it belongs on a vintage Chris Craft boat...

and here's what I bought myself for christmas.... not a 4k projector, but still pretty cool!

I don't own any leica's... to steep for my pockets... but I do charish my contax RTS from when I was a teenager.

wish i had the resources to be able to collect cameras. Though i have a collection of old computers people didnt want, much cheaper, old 8086 laptops, hard drives the size of 2 5.25" that holds only 500kb. i think i still have some punch cards around, haven't seen them in a while so i might have lost those :-/

I think that computers in Space Shuttle still runs on similar circuits :sifone:

Priceless advice.

Food, water, shelter, tools for creating.

For me there seems to be some Murphy´s law for collecting things:
No matter how rare and sought after an item is, once you have hunted it down and bought it, you can be almost sure that another cheaper and/or better specimen turns up shortly after your purchase ...
But, as somebody wisely said: an item has the exact value the seller and the buyer agree upon at the time of the transaction.

BTW: anybody up to swapping cameras? (Do we get a new forum section `collectors only´?)

Thanks for the advice Jim! Nothings better than to get advice from those who have great experience. You have YEARS of experience in collecting so I count my self very very lucky and privilaged :-) Thanks a million Jim!

That's a great collection and display Joe. I still have my old Sinclair Spectrum buried away somewhere.

Collecting sure is fun - but for some reason my whisky collection seems to evaporate before my eyes. Fortunately my vinyl record collection is growing quite nicely, and if you look after them, and even play them with care they're going to last a long time and bring immense enjoyment.

Jim's collecting advice is dead on right. I collect what I enjoy, and with the vinyl I collect to play and enjoy so mint vinyl is a must, but I'm not going to pay silly prices for a sealed copy.

Thanks, I have even filled in the gaps since I took those, and then ran out of room so I keep some boxed in the garage. I broke Jim's rules #3 and #5 big time!
