  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Mysterious SKULL

How about another hint, Jarred?

Okay lets go back to the drawing board.
There are a lot of issues with that idea.
Lets look at it from the angle that this is the skull (it has the right filename for starters) and that the other photo is maybe the bit attached to the side:

darkened-skull.jpg

Oddly this picture reminds me a bit of the red one but there we go.

Red two?

Im just going to close my eyes till NAB 2015 ;)

If the sensor is higher resolution and framerate then it l will produce heat, even with the advanced aptina tehnology I mentioned, so any extra room for heat dissipation technology in s welcome.

Again, you guys should stop guessing at latches etc, and run 3D focus software to see details of what is blurred out. At the moment most of what you are doing with your speculation is providing amusement for Jarred, who knows exactly what it is. :)

If this is the case, let's definitely hope you can wirelessly send it over to the camera or laptop - otherwise, you're tethered and having the wrangle cables in the studio!

But perhaps, they'll make the SSD something you can belt-clip and tote around? I still think being tethered would be a bit of a pain :/

The idea was more of a detachable head that could be directly connected or remotely connected.
I agree the arri setup is a bit odd there.

Well of course Jarred knows what it is!
We might be in trouble if he didn't!

...and if Jarred is amused then that is great.

I'm glad to spread some happyness in the world. :)

I think you are right tho.

Lets enhance it:

RED don't telegraph their moves anymore, so if they're announcing something at NAB, they've got to be aiming at delivering it within about a year. IMO there's no way they're going to announce a new camera/sensor to replace the current Dragons based on that kind of time-frame. New modules and partial upgrades for enhanced features or functionality, sure, but not a whole new camera.

However, it's no secret they've got a large format camera in the works, which was originally proposed as part of the same camera line-up that included the Epic and Scarlet models. Someone posted a picture of it further back in the thread.

I thought the second (and maybe third) pictures were of that large format camera and had nothing to do with the first picture of something attached to the current Epic type body. If you look at the old pictures of that proposed large format camera, it has a large section that extends beyond the camera body out to where the lens sits. That would either be the new type of lens mount, or a kind of adapter piece that a regular form-factor lens mount would attach to. Which fits the picture Jarred posted, as does the mind-boggling thinness of the area the crazy-large sensor would be located in.

The announcement of such a camera would also fit in with Jarred's "Heh heh heh" reaction on the forums here to another camera manufacturers announcement of their '65mm' digital sensor camera, and would, I imagine, be something a famous stills photographer might get excited about too.

Anyway, I don't know, that's just what I thought and was why I made the previous comment about the possibility of a new type of lens mount.

Just to add, shooting tethered with such a large sensor would make sense too, and might even be necessary, so the large output port/s would fit the picture as well.

A little bit of Red history people:

-2007 August: RED ONEs were shipped to customers.

-2010 January:
Upgrades for RED ONE cameras to Mysterium X sensors begin.

-2011 August:
EPIC-Xs are shipped to customers

-2014: Upgrades for Red epic X to Dragon sensor Begin.

If we do the Math: A body last 3 years before a new sensor upgrade, and 1 year after this upgrade a new body come with the same sensor.

So the next logical move is: A new Red camera body with the last year sensor.

In other words, "Red Skull Dragon" should come this year ..

Very true. "GladIBoughtDragon" fits into that. Also the fact that it will involve sending in cameras.

Between the Red One and the Epic form factor came one giant promise from Jim: Obsolesence Obsolete. It represented a commitment to design and the customer that meant the cameras they made and we bought would not be quickly abandoned and the renewable, modular form factor was born.

That is why I think part of your equation is flawed and we should not expect an entirely new body on a 3 year schedule. New sensors (delivered) every 4 years perhaps, but expect them to be shoe horned into or strapped on to the same matchbox as much as possible and for as long as possible.

I guess that is where the notion that one of these photos might be of a new, changeable sensor block rather than a whole new box to encase the "brain" came from.

my take.

The "Obsolescence obsolete" was declared in 2006 :

Jim:

"At the Nab in 2006.. we also declared Obsolescence Obsolete. We talked about upgrades instead of having to buy a new camera every time there was some new technology advancement. This concept was new. I had never seen a company do what we were talking about. I still haven't".

So my equation fits perfectly my friend..

Edit:

Red one Body: 2007-2011 (4 years)
Red Epic Body: 2011-2015 (4 years)

Nothing is abandoned too quickly here..

Dragon Begins Now was NAB 2013. The sensor is 2 years into its life cycle. The Epic body is 4 years old now and apparently causes loss of performance of the Dragon sensor because it's the size of a "matchbox". I'm sure a new, thinner and better camera body is on the way.

Thank you for correcting my timeline. :-)

However we need to remember that the body of the Red One was set before the 2006 promise and that Red came up with an unprecedented upgrade plan from Red One to Epic in order to deliver on that promise.

For Red to continue to honor the Obsolesence promise when moving from the Epic form factor to some new body, some might think they would have to do the same kind of trade in. Do you think they would want to do that again? How about every four years? Before you answer consider how much larger the customer base is now than it was in '11/'12 and how much larger it might be in 2019.

Does it lose performance because of the body design? How would a smaller body improve upon that do you think?

I'm talking about the general shipment David, which was in 2014 ;) :

You're welcome ;) About the body upgrade, of course they will! They upgrade sensors today even with a "much larger customer base", so why would they not upgrade bodies?

If there is a Red Jigaw piece that replaces the square behind the lens mount, maybe it now includes SuperBlack in the tunnel section to stop internal reflections .. to make Nikon lens users really happy. :)

Cooling technology does exist - most of it adds extra weight (eg ForcedCoolingUsedinMicroKelvinSystems, WasteHeatToElectricity, LiquidCoolants).
'Light Solutions that would reduce heat would be 14nm ASICs, PyrolyticElemementsToWickHeatAway, GolfballingOrAirImpedanceMatchingOfFrontOrTopFan ... possible but I don't think Red would have their talent working on these.

8 gold pins are required at the rear; 12 on the front; 24 on the side handle. 13 pins seems 'closer' to a lens mount.
Could there be a new mount to power Angenieux lens

The silver-connector has the indent mark using on Red connectors. Assuming the pins on the new device are the same distance apart as the ones on the back of the camera ... the silver next connector is an EVF or Power connector (Not an XLR).
This would enable 2 x EVFs to be used at once.

... but if the new 13 pin device has its pins equally centred and Horizontal ... the width of this device would be 30% less than the current mount .. it would be too skinny / and less than the width of back of a Canon Lens ... more like the width of the PlasticRedLink cover on the top of the dragon.

Let's do it:

Globalshutter Dragon in a new body.

When is Chritmas?

Pat

I think you are onto something. Perhaps we'll see a global shutter Dragon Studio, with extra processing power for additional highspeed?

I think there's a chance we'll see following from RED at NAB:

1) Dragon Studio - aka RED TWO
2) Dragon Skull - studio module for current "brains"
3) Dragon Mini - a smaller camera that's more gimbal/drone friendly? I think some of these leaks may indeed me DIFFERENT products. One of them could be a new, smaller camera?
4) Dragon Imax - 65mm sensor

Also, I wonder if the Meizler Module isn't being reengineered into some of the above products (ie is incorporated into the "skull" and "Studio" configs).

Again - I'm just guessing (always fun to do), but like so many others...I'm very curious what has in store this year!!

That would be the biggest NAB to date IMO. Doubt they would announce all of that in one year but it would be insanely awesome if they did :)
