  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Mysterious SKULL

A lot of talk about Dragon in general, and a lot of people are thinking a burst mode module. Now, as someone with a Scarlet Dragon, do you think it will still be compatible / how useful? (Hard to really say, obviously, but that's all that's in my mind from all of this).

As the Scarlet Dragon's slowmo is hit hard from compression, (60fps 5K WS 16:1), I doubt it will be able to handle 500fps+.

I can already see people with more dollars than sense starting posts asking why their images are so dark when shooting at 1000fps burst mode. Just being lighthearted. hehe

As I said before, don't get your hopes up for a burst module.

Jarred was always pretty clear on this:

Higher frame rate = new brain.

Just wanting to make sure there's no tears afterwards if these magic module dreams don't come true as you expect ;)

New brain or new "skull". Hasn't he made it seem like there was some sort of breakthrough? He said a new brain would be required quite a long time ago.

unwind your knickers.

Come, now. I would've thought you, of all people, could recognize and appreciate a little sarcastic repartee. It's all good.

If it is multiple modules, then yes, add them all on, from the sides to the front...and the camera will be encased. Like a Brain in a skull. No ears though.

That, my friend, is the Stretch Armstrong of logical stretches. You could do all that 6 months ago, before the new skull logo, on an MX Epic/Scarlet with an XL battery module, the Switchblade and the Motion Mount. Like I said before, thanks for letting me know what's really up.

The way I sees it, unless RED is just over new gadgets for MX cameras, whatever device is in that first picture (on the side of the cam) has to capitalize on what differentiates Dragon from MX (#GladIBoughtaDragon).

Since the exterior physical specs haven't changed, it seems like it's some extra bit that was (will be?) put inside Dragon cameras that isn't inside MX cameras and/or the greater horsepower of the Dragon boards that makes these new gadgets possible.

EDIT: After Scott's comment below, I'll amend this thought by saying the Dragon sensor itself differentiates the two cameras and that anything related to it, such as OLPFs, would also qualify.

RED scrapped the Meizler Module in favor of something smaller, lighter and modular. I don't see them building something for the entire Dragon body to fit inside of. To me, it seems like going backwards for them, given their current trajectory. Remember, #thinisin.

I have no clue what these things are but I'm pretty confident about the things I think they aren't or don't represent. We'll see soon enough.

Okay- so I found the pins today while changing my OLPF....

Twelve pins there, thirteen on the mystery object, and I think those kind of pins only connect to flat contacts, not pin to pin...but...a new camera could have thirteen pins, for a different kind of lens mount...

Edit: I'm all in with the drop in OLPF chassis.

Maybe this means one of the new bits is a quick change, drop in OLPF adapter of some kind.

If this replaces the part pictured above, then the area in the top right of the photo below might be ports for lens control accessories, ND controls or the like. (It would be on the dumb side of the camera) That 13th pin could mean additional controls or data handling capability.

Maybe the new pin would be used to communicate with the OLPF, to ID which is installed?

Then this could mean behind the lens filtering... maybe variable ND... maybe a quick change or drop in OLPF adapter of some kind.

There have been hints of activity within Red on this front.

This seems like the most realistic guess at what we're looking at thus far.

Maybe that's what Jarred meant by "Oops" and "#thinisin" in his FB post. If people had a much quicker way of swapping OLPFs, I think they'd send in their cameras all over again, with just a minimum of bitching from those folks who couldn't help themselves.

Yeah, between the "trigger" image and mention of "gladiboughtadragon" and the "breakthroughs" this absolutely means we should be looking at the Dragon getting a burst mode or going through a high speed conversion for Dragon owners.

I don't think it's a new brain, if only because people will be pissed for having spent ~$9.5-12.5k to upgrade to Dragon, and then have to spend another ~$XXk(?) less than a year later to upgrade again. That's as bad as new models every year (which is something RED is against). I also think it'd do more harm than good if RED was calling back cameras (yet again!) to further refine the OLPF system (make it hot swappable or add ND), especially if it came at a cost to the end-user... This would be the third call-back in a year for the same thing.

It could be a tether -- just a lens mount that sends data back to the brain (cabled and/or wirelessly). That would require an upgrade (for the physical port and/or a wireless module), would likely get a photographer excited (since they often tether in the studio) and could potentially be used to allow the brain to focus on chewing through higher fps. Plus, if it's wireless, it'd give Dragon wings and be thin-is-in...

OR, all of this could be a RED herring, and it's actually a DragonFat -- exact same camera, but just 20lbs heavier... You zoom back from the skull logo and just below it there are two skeleton hands giving you the finger.

Whatever it is we all want it yesterday

Wayne stop being a party pooper and stop. start. stop/start.

heh heh heh.

It's the RED Apocalypse button. Fortunately, the engineers had the foresight to add "stop" functionality.

I think all of these teaser photos are of different things.

So now I think we will have to wait for NAB for all the goodies to be unveiled. #dammitall.
