  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Monstro 645 Speed Booster Experiment

I sent emails to both metabones and Caldwell about making a focal reducer (or even an MF to EF one) for RED's interchangeable mount and got no response...

Very interested to see how this turns out and if it'll play better with other lens combos (or smaller sensors)... E.g. could one of these be thrown on a Raven? And if so, being that it's so much smaller, would it effectively crop-out a lot of the distortions you're seeing? Or would higher quality FF35 glass have less distortions out of the gate (compared to MF glass) on the smaller sensors?

ALSO, I'm curious to know more about the Bellycam 3.0 strap and how it's connected to the camera.

Pity computer processing ability is well behind capture tech.
Some time off I'm afraid before affordable computers can play 12 or 16k images smoothly.
The cameras I have currently exceed what I can deliver as well. So technically we are already well ahead of the curve.

Nice to dream about bigger sensors, bigger wider gate glass. But the reality is, what we have at our finger tips right now is more than enough, until computers catch-up.

My only reason I'll stay with s35 as my work horse, is because I get to use hundreds more different lenses than VV can utilize without cropping or vignettin, allowing me so many more creative looks.

@Phil Nice! glad you're pursuing that. Tried telling one company I used to work for to create basically what you and Duclos are pursuing to do, but it was dismissed. Would definitely like to see it across different cameras like the Alexa Mini Open Gate, and even the A7 bodies for photos. Just got to get to 70mm x 56mm to compete with 6x7 and Imax!!!!

The speed booster does not retain the large format perspective compression on smaller sensors. The lens simply turns into a wider lens.

Scaling up the sensor gives the same effect as scaling down the set, which yes, is giving slightly different results than moving to a wider faster lens which is what speed boosting provide.

how is it different? It's still a loupe behind the lens. If that's what it is...

Having moved to the Weapon 8k Helium I already miss my Epic Dragon speed booster. https://vimeo.com/184576821 I love that with a quick drop in using the OLPF caddy and a change of mount I could have FF at 5k and wider with 6k with the right lenses. Best of both, not restricted to just using lenses that cover FF as easy to swap back as changing OLPF caddy.

I though so too...until I saw a test where they were zooming and changing the OD. I did not save it at the time and it has come up so many times since then....

Jacek sorry for the perhaps obvious question, what is the OD?

Having shot a lot of still 4x5 and 6x7 back in the day, I've always felt some of the difference in feel of an image shot on a larger format compared to a smaller one ( independent of FOV and format resolution and comparatively wider aperture/less depth of field) lies in the difference in what is effectively the pupil size of the lenses front element, that the image is formed from something other than a single point perspective. Something of the effect seems to happen with zooms with really large front elements as well. Anyone else have feeling on this?

object distance

Here's two photos, one shot on APS-C and one on full frame. Depth of field is not the same (left is shallower). Which was shot on which?

Before deciding we also need to know if the distance, the f-stop were the same on both lenses...

This whole thread is deliberately cryptic and I fail to see just what Phil is going on about. Focal length reducing a medium format lens does not make the sensor suddenly larger. Sure you gain some speed performance on the lens, but by and large, medium format lenses tend to be slower to begin with. It's not like there's a medium format 50mm f/.95...

Phil, you created the thread, why all the obfuscation?

It's a speedbooster. That's all.

There's more going on in terms of how it's implemented and things, but there truly shouldn't be any obfuscation.

It's merely not ready yet.

But Phil, I'm baffled by this diagram...

A speedbooster doesn't make more photosites on a sensor, so it's misleading to somehow infer a larger gate dimension...

No, but it does allow you to tap into the coverage of 645 lenses and what they would approximately look like on a sensor of this size.
