  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Monstro 645 Speed Booster Experiment

I just hope it works with DSMC1... Would really like confirmation.

Also hope it's not crazy expensive (close to metabones pricing would be nice :)

Something like this would be such an awesome product to have for the Scarlet-W

and for Epic-W Helium at S35 size (6.5K?) - 24-70 2.8 becomes F2 zoom, 50mm 1.4 becomes 1.2

I hope to God that is a locking EF.

The SpeedMount has a positive lock EF mount.

We worked on the product for quite a while now with Lars and Steven at Hanse Inno Tech. Feels so good to finally announce it!

Unfortunately, it will not work on DSMC1 cameras due to the tighter space between mount and sensor. But we're working on a DSMC1 version (which would be a new product) that we will test later this year. No guarantee yet if it will work.

We'll be at IBC in Amsterdam with our RED Epic-W and the prototype of the SpeedMount EF. Please contact me by mail or on facebook (ABT cine / my private account) if you want to test it.

Tighter space between mount and sensor? If that's the case, how are the old/new RED mounts able to work on both DSMC1 and DSMC2 (wouldn't the flange distance be totally off)? I need clarity, cause this is quite a shame.

Any plans to make similar products for other cameras (e.g. BUMP4.6k)?

Would love to see some .r3ds frames if you have them... Something wide; like a 24mm f1.4 being 14mm f1.0 equivalent. (mmmm... gravy.)

The width and height of the opening in DSMC1 and DSMC2 cameras are different, but the depth is the same. That's why all RED DSMC1 mounts also work on DSMC2 cameras.

We haven't looked into the feasibility on other cameras such as the BMD Ursa 4.6k or the ARRI Alexa Mini yet.

We'll share lots of R3Ds in the coming weeks (maybe even from the IBC floor).

Ahh, I see... a shame... Does that mean the optical element actually sits recessed into the olpf/opening a bit? If so, then it should only be a matter of shaving down the same element so that it fits into DSMC1 opening, no? If that *is* the case, when you do test the DSMC1 version, you should see if it has any performance issues on DSMC2 as well (cause if it doesn't, then you'd need only make the smaller/DSMC1 fitting one).

For the few of you following along I've been allowed to talk about a few more details of this Focal Reducer.

1. It's in development from Duclos Lenses.
2. It not only provides FF35 lens projection to Super 35mm, but also larger Medium Format/65mm glass to VistaVision sized sensors.
3. This is being done the "hard way" and is a totally new optical design.
4. Prototype testing in May 2017 was largely inspired by IMAX after testing both the 8K Helium S35 and Dragon 8K VV sensors.
5. Selfie shot on the RWD Weapon Dragon 8K VV with the prototype and Pentax 105mm prime.
6. More relatively soon.

Will it be DSMC1 friendly? And will it be out by the end of the year?

As harsh as this is gonna sound, I'll say it anyway in the hopes you'll be able to clarify; when you say 'being done the hard way' and 'new optical design', I read it as 'reinventing the wheel' and 'more expensive than competitors'... To be honest, I think this is a timing thing; if Hanse/ABT *ship* theirs in quantity before 2018, they'll have captured the market in the same way metabones did.

It sounds to me that there are 2 or maybe 3 versions of the reducer here.. The one that Duclos and Phil are working on is similar to the ABT in that it reduces FF35 lenses to S35 sensor, and maybe the ABT version will also reduce the Medium format lenses to S35 sensor also, but the Duclos/Phil version seems to be a little more diverse in working towards being able work on both Medium format lenses and 35mm lenses on both the Vista Vision sensor and the Supper 35 Helium sensor?
Am I getting this right???

Im probably just reading in to the VV usage more due to the fact Im in line for a FF35/VV sensor upgrade. Still I would kill to use my Hasselblad lenses on my Weapon Helium S35... That would be killer.. with all that rez. and pixels to spare.
Thank you to both camps in creating more tools to make great images...

It should be DSMC1 friendly. At the moment there's no reason for it not to be, but since it's a wholy new optical design that's being taken in consideration.

I am hoping before the end of the year.

There's still some greebles to work out, but the idea is you only need one of these to cover your FF35 to S35 and 65mm to VV reducer needs. It's taking a heartbeat because Duclos is creating a brand new, high quality optic. Should be notably better than Metabones and a couple other things out there. If you've seen Duclos' extenders, you know what I'm talking about already.

You can call it 'reinventing the wheel'. I call it progress.

The one that HIT is making is, as far as I can tell, simply harvested metabones glass from China. They're very similar products and apparently both Duclos Lenses and HIT are working on them in tandem. They'll likely beat us to the market since I speculate there's no optical engineering to be done on their end. But I'm okay with that. I'm not going to push out a product just to be first to market. I'm more than happy to take my time and make a product that meets the expectations of discerning cinematographers.

The Duclos product is being designed for larger format lenses to bring them down to 8K VV (which will obviously work with FF35 to S35 as well). Our goal is to bring medium format images and character to the next generation of FF35 and Vista Vision sensors.

(and a regular FF to S35 model as well for all you Helium guys ;-)

Things are getting interesting!

If RED stick with the same body mount for a while (which I'm guessing they will) and Jarred has already alluded to a FF35 future, I can see the massive appeal of MF>FF35 (and everything smaller). Very curious to see how you guys are going to handle the lens mount side... PL? One of the MF flavours?
