Hi RED forum...
I need some advice.

I have never delved into the small tripod / small video head territory before... and have know idea what is best when it comes down to compact heads..

I'm wanting to purchase a few large Gitzo tripods (with the flat tops) for a job thats coming up were I cannot take our large tripod head kits...(just to big)
I need to purchase adequate video heads to go onto these Gitzo tripods.. Something strong enough that will hold a small epic configuration but with large lenses...

I notice a few of you guys with these large Gitzo's... but cannot see what model or brand of some of your heads you have on them.

Can anyone share with me the best, most compact head I should purchase.
Please share images and links.

Thanks in advance.

Mark :)

get the manfrotto 536 tripods, the locks are better in my opinion than the twist type. Plus..

Yeah, but can your assistant swing from the Gitzos like a jungle gym?

I've got a miller compass 25 but you could probably go as low as the compass 15

I have a Manfrotto 536 here as well, bought it with a small Cartoni for DSLR projects but holds the Epic well. Keep it in a good bag or tube to avoid damage to the carbon fiber.

Hi Mark. I bought one of these as an experiment in light heads, and now I use it 90% of the time. It's great with an epic set up out to about 300mms as long as it's not windy. I actually like the fluid motion much better than the newer sachtlers. the only down side I have seen is that it gets pretty stiff below freezing. The sticks are a little delicate, but the head is great. I put a small size RBQ on it with another one on my hand held rig, and it's a 3 second change over from tripod to hand held.

Gitzo GT5562GTS is an awesome tripod, but you need to get used to the twist-lock.

Then get a 100mm Gitzo Bowl that goes into the middle top part of the legs by unscrewing the flat base. Then you can put any number of 100mm bowl heads.

I have worked with Cartoni Focus HD, it takes 12kgs and is very smooth for its price.

I have even used Cartoni Delta Rosso (22kgs cap). I will be getting a Sachtler Video 18 (cap 18kgs) as well, very small head with high capacity.

I think that bowl adapter is awesome to have.

Mark, check out the sachtler fsb 8 for 75mm legs, handles loads up to 20 lbs. Take a look at the dv-10sb for 100mm, supports 26 lbs. If you need more than that, you're not looking at something very lightweight and might as well go with O'connor.

In my limited experience, the miller compass 15 and cartoni hd looked and felt a little cheap. Priced that way too... Many people here seem to like them, though.

Thanks Ketch,

Im a bit rusty on all this light weight gear... So good to know what some of you are using.
The Miller compass 25 comes up alot... So I'll get one of them.
THe Gitso or Millar carbon... seem to be the same... but both highly recommended .

Looking at my little EPIC on my curent head and legs... the HEAD is bigger than the camera !!!

Thanks for the input. :)

Cheers
