So Red seem to be now selling the 512Gb Mini Mags in red but in the past they were black.
Anyone know what the difference is to the two colours?

Initially the 512GB and 1TB were black, however, the 120GB and 240GB MINI-MAGs were made. The 512GB and 1TB MINI-MAGs allow you to get the lowest possible compression ratios out of RED Weapon bodies, Carbon Fiber Woven and Forged bodies in particular. To help designate that different RED now finishes them with a red color.

I heard this...

The red color mini-mags are designed for slightly faster write speeds in the upcoming Weapon because they will be able to record both redcode raw and prores at the same time. Black mini-mags record up to 225mb/s and the red ones record up to 300mb/s.

To clarify (based on what I've read numerous times already), is that the new reds are the same. There is no change in performance. They're simply colored red now to designate the fact that the larger capacities have faster write speeds (and thus offer better compression ratios).

To say it another way, the old black 512 and 1tb are the same speed as the new red 512 and 1tb. They have simply been updated in appearance to reflect the max write speeds.

No longer made correct. Those of us with the minis in black are now hold a rare piece of history. and by rare, I mean not so rare, a lot of us have them, and a lot of us have many. I wonder if in the future the black ones will have a lesser value on the used market.

There is a performance difference in the coloured Mag's. I found this on the Red website...

Manufactured from robust aluminum, REDMINI-MAGs offer rugged reliability in a compact form factor. Available in multiple capacities, standard grey models provide maximum read/write speeds up to 225 MB/s—while the turbo-charged red models can achieve up to 300 MB/s for even lower REDCODE® compression.

Rory, that quote applies to the current 'in store' lineup if you are buying new mags...

But the "old" black 1 Tb and 512 Gb minimags have the exact same 'turbo charged' speed as the recent red coloured ones...

as far as I understand it : all minimags were super fast (and black) until the 240 and 120 were introduced with a slower max speed so they updated the anodising with red color on larger capacities / faster ones to differentiate them.

HTH

I wonder how the new red mags' finish will last compared to the black ones. Over time the black gives way to gray once the wear and tear takes its toll. Perhaps this red finish will be more durable? I also wonder if they're hotter to the touch or not?

The latest Rev-U of the DSMC Media Operations Guide (which features Weapon etc.) has a singular section for 512Gb and 1Tb Minimags with Weapon compression specs. It makes no mention nor distinguishes anywhere throughout (as far as I can see) between RED and BLACK 512Gb/1Tb media. I take this as conviction that there is no operational difference between RED and BLACK, just cosmetic.

No operational or speed differences between black and red 512GB and 1TB mini mags. The color change was made when they released the slower 120 and 240 mini mags. Red probably should have made the new ones the different color to avoid confusion.

Correct there's no mention of this in the media guide. I have put in a request to make this noted and to also list the previous part numbers for the black 1TB and 512GB. I had to go seeking out this information recently and finally got confirmation from Red. I almost started selling off some of my mini mags only to replace them with new ones that would have been the same performance. Heh.

Totally in the same boat, was about to sell off our black 512gb's and order new red 512's until I figured this out, would have spent a fair bit of additional money in changeover for no functional benefits whatsoever.. I've even had a lot of people asking "are these the black or red ones" and not interesting in buying them if they're black.. meaning the general thinking is that the RED colored ones actually have a performance benefit. I think the specs being identical needs to be clearly called out by RED (in the Ops guide and perhaps a footnote on the Minimag product page itself). I do like the look of the red ones though, if I had my time again and a wad a spare cash..!!

Think of the black 512 mini mags as stealth, less visible and less attention in public.

That's the reason I ordered the "STEALTH" version of the "WEAPON." :iagree:

Thank you very much

ive decided to keep the black ones for two reasons, one; not to have a bright red reflective thing on the camera, but as well, since ill be using mine with a raven as mainly a b-camera, when i rent a weapon to shoot along with it, it will probably have the newer red colored media, so now mine will distinguishable on the DIT station and to my AC's.

Perhaps eventually RED will go down the Apple path and also give us a rose gold option.. :)
