  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Komodo-X

I get the feeling that the Komodo-X is a stopgap camera. That’s why the Komodo Mk2 is taking more time to release.

I really don't think so. I think Komodo-X is Komodo 2. They have no reason to make a new Komodo right now. Why compete with Komodo X? Why compete with the 8K Raptors?

The Komodo-X is going to sell like hot cakes, they have enough to deal with with this.

I honsetly think the Komodo-X will be RED's most popular camera since everyone ran out and bought Scarlet's all those years go.

Going to moderately agree with Nick on this one. I don't think there is a "Komodo 2". The next step really in price, quality, and features is the Raptor 8K S35 or 8K VV.

I just don't see where Komodo 2 would sit in RED's lineup feature-wise beyond what Komodo-X does today. More frame rates or features put it into higher end DSMC3 territory in both pricing and features.

That said, I think the big variable is if RED makes a Komodo 2 that is more in the realm of the original Komodo itself, but I would say that would be a weird thing to do after spending a week with Komodo-X.

Exactly. Like maybe in 2 years they make a new Komodo just because. Some new entry level update. But for now this is it.

Hot Take: RED KOMODO X - A Worthy Upgrade

Well unless Jarred is lying, Komodo Mk2 is happening. He made specific mention to such a camera. Also he has stated on multiple occasions that Komodo-X is not a replacement for Komodo. So I fully expect there to be a Komodo Mk2.

I understand that many cannot see any advantage to the OG Komodo. But slap a couple of BP-915 batteries on the Komodo and it becomes a much smaller package than the Komodo-X. This is a real benefit for many applications… much more so than gaining a half stop of DR in the shadows or better audio… on a crash cam.

He did say that, but I think it'll fit into a similar price point just above the OG Komodo's Price and remain as the Crash Cam Komodo. The KX will be the A-Cam komodo.

If it happens soon i could see it be a pretty minor refresh. (CFx, Better Internals for more horsepower, maybe 8k)

I don’t see them going 8k and undercutting the X. If anything, it’d be a faster processor, same frame rates, built in usb, and the new custom buttons.. but if it’s more than OG Komodo, one might as well go with the X.

I would rather have them make an even smaller Komodo or whatever it would be called than this made up Komodo 2 that makes no sense when the X exists.

I want the Realto version of a Red or action cam version of a Red. Something super small that still captures a high quality 4K image and could fit something like the 9mm Laowa 2.9 RF or similar tiny lenses. The higher end and middle of the market is perfectly covered by their lineup now.

They would be smart to sell a nice Komodo-X ready to shoot package with handle and basic rigging and a new 5” display, and power and media. Something that is like a basic FX6 package.

The consensus is smaller.

The KX came out almost pitch perfect to the demands of all those that wished the KOG was an A cam (minus the ND sitch), but everyone is still anxious for a small and higher inage quality KOG... MKii.

just shows that people don't want an A cam, they want a cheap small cam with A cam image quality.

No I want a small cam that I can put in places I can't put an A cam. Which is why I bought the Komodo. Not really that concerned about what the delusional people want. And I couldn't care less about having internal NDs. I definitely wouldn't have bought the Komodo if it had an internal ND mechanism that could break.

The consensus is smaller.

I have absolutely no doubt people would like an even smaller camera, but it's very, very clear Komodo-X was designed to solve what the majority of filmmakers were looking for while still keeping the body small and lightweight. It's 2.6lbs and the gains are pretty amazing considering that weight increase for 2lbs of the original Komodo. Any smaller you are looking really into mirrorless camera territory where you might shave a pound and maybe a smidge more, but you will be adding weight to that body for sure. Using the RED RF>PL you add a 1lbs, using a 3rd party one, you can go lighter, but not with /i or the extreme build quality, this would be similar when adding that to a mirrorless body too.

Without the monitor, the camera is actually really small IMO. Especially for something designed to film for entire production days and connect with industry standard workflow things.

I honestly don't know if RED wants to dance in the mirrorless world in terms of scale and form factor. To many concessions that would then need to be solved with accessories which in turn would make the body bigger, heavier, and more than likely not very sturdy.

To the point of a "Rialto-style" concept, that's 4.2lbs alone and that's not bringing the weight or wrangling of the cable into the mix, which adds more weight in all practical workflows. If you are aiming for something like that, rig your Komodo or Komodo-X with a power feed rather than a brick and keep your tidy 2-3.6lbs setup which is also smaller in at least two dimensions and not depth. I moderately feel the whole main smaller body of DSMC3 lineup excludes the need for a Rialto-type thing in practice and comparatively. Sort of think that's the point of regular and XL bodies really.

The X improved on the shadows, hats off. That improves on the global shitter advantage they have.

But i have a hard time imagining how Sony FX3 mk2 and Canon C70 mk2 are going to f*ck up. they already beat the KOG on every level except resolution and GS, but at near half the price of a kitted up KOG.

Now enter the KX, and i have no idea how the C70 and FX6/3 successors can't beat it other than Global shutter. They already have the DR, frame rates, sensor size, flippy screens on board, or internal ND, audio, you name it, and at half the price. how long can the red raw brand last?

Yeah I think this is correct honestly. Not really sure how much smaller they can go and maintain sensor size and quality. The lens size and mount size really becomes the main factor in size. For me personally I really just want something significantly better in the action cam size world (even if it is fixed lens) to be able to capture better POVs. Those big helmet solutions just aren’t really useable, but it’s a very niche use case. Probably more realistic to have Sony, DJI or GoPro to fill that space. A GoPro with twice the sensor size that can record ProRes would do pretty well, and with iPhones capable of recording ProRes these days maybe someday we will see it. Maybe Sony will make a much better version of their RX0. It honestly seems like Red would be more interested in a RX0 form factor other than the current mirrorless size that is flooded with options.

The stripped down modularity of Red is what keeps me interested. I hate having things on a camera that I’m not currently using and love building out a unique setup for each use case.

When I said Rialto style I was thinking something more like Komodo size body wired up to action cam sized (or slightly bigger to accommodate the mount and sensor size), and the only reason that seems even remotely possible is some of the amazing tiny lenses available now like all the little Laowas. Or even just slim it down to be the current 4k crop sensor size and smaller lens mount.

All of that assumes only the processing side needs the cooling and not the sensor though so no idea. I don’t think the actual current Rialto is very interesting. The Top Gun example mounting them in a cockpit isn’t really a great one anymore, Komodo or Komodo-X would have been much better suited for that if it was available at the time. Those all looked fine mounted on that cockpit dash but that also means they had all those heavy camera bodies tucked away somewhere. But! It is cool that Sony actually did it.

I think the RED Hydrogen side-project would have led to products that could have existed in the action and mirrorless camera realm, pity the phone side of it led to its demise.

It's interesting to imagine what RED could do if they did want to make an action cam, even smaller than their Komodo crash/utility camera. Funny to also then imagine how, when people inevitably ask for a more fully featured version of the same thing, RED would have to make what adds up to a mirrorless camera, being the natural step back up from the action camera form.

Just can't see RED broadening out like that, if they're to remain a digital cinema camera company, and not get massacred competing with much bigger companies that have spent decades developing and refining their stills cameras to make them what they are today.

I do actually think RED could make a cinema-quality action-sized cam that could fit into their DSMC lineup, but it wouldn't be as fully featured as even the OG Komodo, while it would probably be at least as expensive as one. Which means, on the downside, it wouldn't appeal like the OG Komodo did to as wide of a potential user-base. While on the upside, it wouldn't actually be directly competing with the cheaper more established action cams.

Not being a camera or sensor designer, I don't know how feasible it would be in reality, but it's not hard to think of ways space saving and size reduction might be achieved, while maintaining the necessary level of image quality. It wouldn't be like any camera RED have made before though.

Those are great cameras, and im sure they're gonna have some great successors on the way. I've used them both quite a lot.

At the end of the day, our different jobs are going to have different needs. We're also going to have different ways that we like to work. For me the only advantage I feel like i get with a FX6 or C70 are the internal NDs. That would be helpful at times but thats not really the deciding factor for me when deciding what to take out on a job. With the FX6 and C70, I despise the codecs that they shoot. RED gives me R3D or Internal ProRes. I use both of those for a variety of applications and I feel like my needs are more than covered there.
