  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Komodo-X

Agree about a 5" option for a DSMC3 Touch, even think that with V-Raptor for real tidy and small rigs.

I don't have much of a gripe on the RMI top mount thingy. It connects via a 15mm clamp that can be finger tightened by hand or tool for real security and it's firm on the body. You can relocated it via Noga/Cine Arm though if need be. Lots of people do that. I generally don't because I'm not a huge fan of the vibration in those arms, but I've certainly done it when the camera is up high or needed on the shoulder.

I don't have gripes with the top mount as well, but what I was getting at with that is having the possibility to use the camera with a top handle with sec button, a 5" monitor and a small side grip, so literally as small as you can get, with all the options to hold the camera.
But as far as I'm aware it's either rec-trigger handle, or monitor right? even when relocating the monitor to the handle.

Hey Phil,

Do we know where the actual announcement will take place? For instance, will there be a YouTube Livestream or anything like that?

Refresh it and try it again. It appears to work fine for me atleast.

After having owned and used many Red cameras, I am not sure I care at all about global shutter... unless there would be a flash going off... Really to me I think it makes no difference? Maybe because the body is smaller we need no skew/jello... but to me I could care less either way Id rather having increased DR than GS.

Different shooters have different priorities.

More DR is always welcome, but few displays in real world environments can actually show more than 9 perceivable stops (if that). Yes, digital tone mapping (DTM) can stuff more in that window, but that's a trade off for a more natural contrast/gamma characteristic. IMHO, authoring primarily for the 8 stops that most viewers will be able to see is the biscuit. Any camera with 12 legit stops and intentional exposure choices should get 'er done.

Rolling shutter OTOH, can sometimes take the viewer out of the moment - ruining the suspension of disbelief that keeps them fully immersed. I concede that not all content is impacted in a meaningful way by the rolling shutter artifact. That said, when it does "get in the way", it can really diminish the impact of a carefully crafted scene. For action sports (and lots of other non-narrative content) GS is a no brainer.

Cheers - #19

* Deeper dive: Unless you are using the under appreciated motion mount or the Tessive Time Filter, digital cinema cameras have a square wave shutter characteristic. With traditional mechanical shutters there was always a slight ramp while it opened and closed that helped reduce perceived judder and related motion artifacts. In a perfect world we could tune the shutter characteristic to suit taste/content as desired (something I really want to experiment with someday). Until then, an electronic global shutter provides a clean "freeze" that can then be manipulated in post using tools like reverse optical flow to tailor the perceived motion characteristic.

* Example: Just last night I watched a documentary on keyboardist Chuck Leavell that had a nice, organic, cinematic feel. I enjoyed it, but on some of the tighter shots of his fingers on the keys it seemed like he wasn't actually striking the keys I could hear in the soundtrack. I suspect it was because his fingers moved so fast at times that he pressed the key down and came back up to hovering above the keys during the 1/48th (or possibly 1/60th) the shutter was closed. In some footage of live performances, this discrepancy hindered me from feeling like I was there. YMMV.
