  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Komodo-X

Anyone know what the power draw is going to be like? I've read that it will be more than Komodo but by how much. Raptor seems more like DSMC2, if its along those lines......Uhhh. Still fighting for the small form factor low power draw.

I wish there was a 5" version of this for the smaller run and gun setups...

And I got a question, is it possible to relocate the monitor on a top handle or something? Never seen one in real live.

Agree about a 5" option for a DSMC3 Touch, even think that with V-Raptor for real tidy and small rigs.

I don't have much of a gripe on the RMI top mount thingy. It connects via a 15mm clamp that can be finger tightened by hand or tool for real security and it's firm on the body. You can relocated it via Noga/Cine Arm though if need be. Lots of people do that. I generally don't because I'm not a huge fan of the vibration in those arms, but I've certainly done it when the camera is up high or needed on the shoulder.

Komodo on it's own draws around 28Wh. There's zero chance it's that nimble now particularly with the ability to drive the RMI and DSMC3 7" Touch.

With the DSMC3 V-Raptor 8K VV and Touch it can peak at 100Wh for sure. You have to keep in mind the DSMC3 Touch can draw up to 18.3 watts on it's own at full blast. I usually never use it at full intensity though, but useful to have that punch in bright conditions either way. That's another good reason for a smaller display.

DSMC2 generally was around 60Wh with the older Touch Screen. Trying to recall the high brightness draw, but it was pretty low still.

I don't think it will be as power hungry as Raptor, might be as power hungry as DMSC2 or maybe slightly under. We'll know the hard answer there soon.

So green and blue channels are overexposed? Trying to evaluate the DR of the camera ;-)

Broad daylight windows with no ND in there. I would likely have used an ND 1.2 or 1.5 in this scenario as I've been to that place before, but that's moderately meaningless.

What I can say is I committed to grabbing one last week, financially that is and particularly after most of the spec reveals. And I'm in town for about a month and a half before I set off on about 60 days of straight out of the country filming. Let me know what you want to see of of RED Komodo-X and I'll do my best to get you some data and imagery.

Phil, from where I sit, I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison of K vs K-X. How closely matched are they with respect to color and dynamic range? I'm hoping to NOT see much of a difference, as I actually prefer the form factor of the original to the X.

Thanks much.

Just to confirm, Komodo X will only have one SDI out, same as OG Komodo?

Yes. So you'll need to split or passthrough the signal. Camera would physically need to be larger for another SDI from the looks of it in Jarred's bag.

He seems to be hinting at something via the RMI potentially in the live stream as well, but that's hardcore speculation.

I am semi new to RED so how does buying a new storm trooper camera work? Is it better to buy the Komodo-X on the website as soon as it is launched or is it better to buy through one of RED's sale representatives. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't exactly know how Komodo-X will be handled, but I'm fairly certain you'll be able to order from red.com as well as local retailers. The last two rounds of Stormtroopers were available through those retailers and online as well as their special edition Rhino recently.

Just like other cameras, everybody orders a batch, then there's allocations, and other things. So basically it's about ordering or getting your pre-order in. Komodo was backordered well into the 2nd year of it being out, which is why people were able to grab a premium for them on the used market for a long while as they were hard to get. Somewhat similar to the Alexa 35s for sale on the market today as they are still fulfilling preorders.

Without promoting favoritism and off the top of my head I'd look to:
- red.com
- B&H
- Adorama
- Filmtools
- Voice and Video
- CVP
- Maxx Digital

Internationally though, things are a bit more wild from what I've seen in the past. Don't know all that is involved in every region, but CVP certainly helps in the UK and all that.

Maxx Digital
Texas Media System
Filmtools
Hotrod Cameras

all easy to deal with, and typically faster turn around, as BH always gets back ordered worse than most, due to the volume they sell.

First time I think I’m interested about a Red camera and haven’t seen any picture nor R3d from it… please somebody shoot a sunset… ;)

On the eve of the official release and still waiting for the specs, price, and other surprises, I have to admit I really didn't see this release coming as fast as it has.
A few weeks ago a higher end Komodo was more of a pipe dream with a slight possibility of being released late in the year.

I'm impressed that RED seemingly has this camera ready when it is. Still have to see what's officially released but this is a decent start.

Regarding the form factor, Komodo X seems to already have very similar dimensions as the existing Komodo. The length difference is somewhat nullified when one considers that Komodo ends up being about the same length once you put a Vmount plate on it which Komodo X has built in.

With the extra power needs this camera likely has at the higher end of use (i.e 6K 80fps) I doubt BP batteries were going to be a good choice. A single Mini V mount can also have a similar weight compared to 2x BP955s so I don't see this as a compromise as much as it is an evolution for a camera that will be used to carry a production as an A cam.

I'm betting modules will help manage most extra production needs with additional power, timecode, etc ports.
The fact that USB is built in also removes the need for Komodo link which in itself adds weight and a bump to the camera's silhouette.

Again, will see the official specs.

After having owned and used many Red cameras, I am not sure I care at all about global shutter... unless there would be a flash going off... Really to me I think it makes no difference? Maybe because the body is smaller we need no skew/jello... but to me I could care less either way Id rather having increased DR than GS.

As someone that does a lot of automotive and handheld work, I notice a massive difference. It’s at the point where when I shoot on anything that doesn’t have a global shutter, I am TOO nervous I’m not smooth enough with the camera. For some work it literally doesn’t matter. But on some jobs, it’s a detail that elevates the quality in a way that you can only get with a global shutter. And there aren’t a lot of great Global Shutter cameras out there.

It looks like the Komodo-X is not all we get today Filmtools just sent me an email saying we are finally getting the RED RF to PL with END
