  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Komodo- X Sample Footage and Review Portal

It’s close to but colors aren’t accurate at those 2 stops. But it’s incredible how it does retain infos until +9 stops. My testing with Alexa35 vs Monstro is that A35 has 3 stops more in the highlights but 2/3 less in the shadows.

nice, have you had a chance to test Raptor.

Nope, and never seen a side by side Monstro/Raptor DR test.

I have done this. The difficult aspect is quantifying and explaining the Color Science Filter variations between both cameras. I can remove the filters on both cameras and that tells a story, but nobody will ever shoot that way. The CSFs don't exactly change the DR, but it will impact on where the DR is placed and how noisy it is.

The short answer is Raptor does have slightly more Total Captured Dynamic Range.

A more detailed answer is you can get Monstro to be alarmingly clean with the Low Light Optimized Filter, but that is far from the color quality and optical artifact prevention that Raptor gets you.

When Raptor came out and even to this day, there's really only one system that compares to Monstro and I held onto my bodies for ease of conversion to Infrared, Full Spectrum, or even UV shooting. That is harder now with DSMC3 as we have a fixed filtration solution. Which moderately means Raptor became my A-Camera and Monstro became my specialty camera. Fortunately the same format size and resolution, so working with them in tandem is easy.

After shooting with Raptor for a long while now, what I can say safely is, the new CSF/OLPF = more creative freedom for typical filmmaking. i.e. I am not skirting around shooting at T16 into the sun if I want to. The frame rate and sensor readout gains are also really noticeable.

Here'a a link to a Chinese language video comparing the Komodo-X ,OG Komodo, Red V-Raptor and the Alexa Mini in certain parts of the video. It includes some over and under tests. Unfortunately it is in 360P if you are not logged in with an account. I just posted it so that you could gather whatever info you could from it visually.

Did I understand right that Komodo-X has more DR than Raptor? Komodo-x 15.5 / 14 stops VS 15.2 / 13.5 for Raptor? I just read numbers but no chinese...

Patrick,

It seems under certain circumstances that seems to be what his Xyla Chart testings indicates, if I'm reading that correctly but I'm probably not. However I don't know his testing methods and I think I would much rather wait for someone like Phil's tests to back something like that up or not back that up.

CVP's latitude test disprove these results very easily.

Their were people here on the forum I believe in the "KOMODO-X" forum who thought that CVP's under test of the Red V-Raptor wasn't representational of what their own personal tests showed . As I said before, I'll wait for Phil's test results.

did you watch the CVP test, or just listen? because what they said and what they show are different. here are the screen grabs from their test.

KX vs VV
-6 under
5 2/3 + over

From watching the Original Komodo (KOG) release, we saw some video comparisons that made the KOG look better than DSMC2 sensors. Though none of them were using Xyla charts or documenting direct comparisons of extreme over/unders. They were more anecdotal. What we're seeing now, with the KX, is a bit harder to question at face value.

Yeah,

I've personally been surprised by what I always thought I would expect from a smaller pixel, S-35 sensor camera and all of the footage and scientific and semi-scientific test results I've been seeing with the komodo-X. I think with certain settings that will be figured out by those whom have it currently or will have it in the future, we will probably see even better results than what we are seeing now.

You're probably right, as you seem to be talking about the wisdom of testing for yourself. there is a lot to be said about that.

Apologies, yes the last image of raptor at -6 is worse than komodo x, but there seems to be a mistake with that image. Based on all of their previous testing and the -5 shots in this very same video where VV is clearly better than X. Here are the -5 shots, a camera doesn't go from completely dominating another at -5, all of a sudden to being worse at -6, that isn't logical really.

I've also posted images from their previous test so that you can also see that VV doesn't shift to Green at -6 the way the last image suggested. That may have been a -7 image or something, i don't know.

And to add to this, I own VV, I'm not just watching other people's reviews. I've done my own test.
