Hi, Rand! Hi, everybody! :)

Hi Sabovik, good to see you again.

Not seeing the "Punchy/neutral" pictures in your post though, there's an outline where they should be and when I open them up in a new tab it just says, 'Invalid File Specified'.

Ooops! How about now?
I haven't uploaded a picture in a long time, don't blame me, please. :smilielol5:

This looks very good, but is there any difference in the Komodo X and OG Komodo for daylight scenes???

Andrew,

I can't really tell, I used an unadvisable workflow technique for the images shown above that I hadn't used on the OG Komodo. However I think the only real difference would be in Night Footage were RED has indicated that the Komodo-X has, I believe, a 1/2 of a stop better lowlight performance. I think maybe the Colors would maybe be different between the two in Daylight scenes.

Here's an unlisted video with a basic grade of the ELQ Komodo-X torture-test James posted - https://youtu.be/vxD1wLTuy-c

Not calling it a torture-test lightly either, as it pushed the sensor to the limits of its under and over exposure in most of the shots, sometimes going beyond my admittedly limited abilities to wrangle it all together into a decent image.

Here are some adjusted versions of the R3D frame grabs James also provided -

It's been good to see how the Komodo-X handles the uncontrolled lighting.

Still curious how the HQ and MQ compression levels might help with the noise and overall image-quality.

Thanks again to James for providing the real world examples of where the camera's exposure limits are.

Some more very basic test clips from the KOMODOD-X back in May.

Download links for R3D clips and R3D frames.

Varied ISO range, check R3D for reference.

Part 2 R3D frames: we.tl/t-I7Wuh78IEz

Great test clips.
Will be playing around with these when schedule hopefully soon decompresses.

I'm very surprised that these shots are ELQ.

Thanks for providing these.

RED Komodo X : la même en MIEUX - YouTube

1) First go to the Youtube page link above, for some reason the procedure below doesn't work the same way on Reduser. Click on the "COG WHEEL" icon and click on the arrow pointing to the right next to "SUBTITLES/CC".

2) Next go and click "AUTO TRANSLATE"

Looking at the Komodo-X Operation Guide that Rand linked to in the other thread, it states -

"The R3D Quality selections include:

HQ - High data rate and less recording time
MQ - Medium data rate (default) and longer recording time
LQ - Low data rate and long recording time
ELQ - Lowest data rate and longest recording time

For high complexity scenes, VFX, and stills from motion workflows, RED recommends the HQ setting.

For cinema (non-VFX) and high-end TV, RED recommends the MQ setting.

For TV, online content, documentary and interviews, RED recommends the LQ setting.

ELQ compression mode provides nearly 50% more recording time than LQ, and REDrecommends using ELQ for scenes where the complexity is low or the final delivery resolution is lower than the acquisition resolution (downsampling).

R3D QUALITY DATA RATES -

FORMAT - 6K 17:9

24P HQ - 239 MB/s
24P MQ - 168 MB/s
24P LQ - 105 MB/s
24P ELQ - 65 MB/s"

Just wanted to point that out, with all the emphasis on the ELQ setting lately, and especially as the examples I myself have posted have all been downscaled, in some cases noise-reduced and generally graded to de-emphasize the effects of compression and underexposure.

ELQ is a great option for its intended purpose, but it's called the lowest quality setting for a reason.

Four R3D samples using each compression setting, of a contrasty, deeply-shadowed and brightly-sunlit scene, with detailed subject matter in the highs/mids/lows (preferably with a colour chart) would be handy to have as reference.

Anyway, that's my PSA for the day.

It's a very capable camera, but it still comes down to how you use it.

So just for the hell of it, here are some stills from one of James' earlier R3D frame grabs.

They're all from a 6K 2.4:1 (6144x2592) timeline in Resolve, exported as uncompressed TIFF's, then converted to 100% JPG's and uploaded without re-sizing.

The base grade is just something that looks kind of normal, using the ISO800 setting the image was originally exposed for.

I then just upped that same base grade in the Camera RAW settings, to ISO1600 and ISO3200 to show the equivalent of a one and two stop pushing of the image to bring out shadow detail (also made some minor contrast and saturation adjustments).

I've also zoomed in the appropriate amounts to show the theoretical 5K, 4K & 2K 2.4:1 resolutions that aren't actually available in the Komodo-X (according to the Operation Guide), with the lower resolutions being upscaled to fit the 6K timeline.

The aim is to see the noise in the shadows when the camera is exposed for the highlights in a real-world directly-sunlit scene.

It may be that there was more exposure range available in the highlights and that the shadows could have been better exposed, but it doesn't look like it.

There could also be different ways of grading the footage to balnce the highlights and shadows, but that doesn't change what was actually captured.

Likewise, noise-reduction could be applied to make the shadows look better, but I think this frame is a good example of the practical limits of the camera.

The question of how much the ELQ compression level played into the result remains, not having seen enough comparisons between the different levels to say.

It's actually a pretty good result imo.

"Focus breathing zero?! I never thought I would find the best lens for KOMODO-X in such a place." Episode 2088 ( Google Translated)

Unfortunately this is in Japanese, but it appears to some kinda Camping/Fishing trip film with the Komodo-X and a Canon RF15-30mm F4.5-6.3 lens

Graded Footage from the Red Komodo-X sample footage I posted on the "RED KOMODO-X" thread. I didn't want to post grades in that Thread because it was more a discussion thread and I didn't want to clog it up with grades. Graded in ACES

Thanks for the link Rand, was wondering what RED were going to do for Komodo-X sample footage.

Here's a basic grade of the clips if anyone's interested - https://youtu.be/SuRa4y6e_48

I'd say the LQ compressed noise does look better than the ELQ, still curious how it would look when captured as cleanly as possible at MQ or HQ.

Les,

Yeah, I had been looking daily to see when any Komodo-X Sample Footage would be posted. I guess they may have needed to get some type of authorization or release from Brandon or other parties to use this footage.
