RED Komodo- X Sample Footage and Review Portal

The skintones already looked good in the image above I just wanted to remove the Magenta/Blue cast.

AFTER

Good catch, From all footage Komodo X seems to have a quite big shift toward blue/magenta in the skin tones, not liking it. Thanks for scouting all this footage, always great threads!

I think this has atleast something to do with RED switching from the Planckian Spectral locus they used in their previous cameras to the Daylight Spectral locus they are using in the OG Red Komodo and more than likely they are still using in the Komodo-X

The difference between the Planckian and Daylight Locusts

Graeme explains it in post from a thread from a ways back, link below

I think the way that the Daylight Locus interacts with certain Color Temperatures at specific times of day will, like maybe dawn or sunset, will exhibit that Magenta look which at certain times of day are normal. However you don't really see it depicted that much in films or at least not in most films.

Yeah I think that green/yellow cast some saw in the Helium and Epic-W maybe why they went in this new direction with the Daylight Locus . I think I remember the Monstro having a bit of a magenta hue to the images as well.

Here is one the first videos I remember seeing of the Komodo With the Magenta/Blue Cast. I thought since there was snow that the obvious Cooler Color Temperature had something to do with it. Because up until that point in the Sample Komodo Thread I hadn't really seen that color cast before. I couldn't image that someone would grade it that magenta but it was a possibility. I tried then to try to remove the Magenta/Blue cast as well.

I don’t understand something. At ISO 12,800, aren’t you essentially throwing out whatever low light capability the camera has? After all, at such a high ISO, the Komodo X has somewhere in the neighborhood of four stops less information in the shadows than at ISO 800, along with dramatically increased noise. I haven’t seen the footage properly yet, I’m on my way to a shoot, but wouldn’t even a much less expensive dual ISO sensor camera vastly outperform the Komodo X in low light?

I don't really know either, I've never used a RED Camera I have only graded and corrected footage from them. I don't know if the extra 1/2 Stop improvement in the Shadows has something to do with this or the re-designed pixel of the sensor of the camera makes this possible. Maybe someone with a much better understanding of the new Komodo-X and dual ISO sensors can explain it better.

Waiting for the dust to settle on this one.
It looks a little too good to be true.
Granted he wrote it was filmed with a 0.95 lens.

I imagine this had some noise reduction though
this would still look quite good even in that scenario.

Perhaps this is really V-Raptor footage.
Will see.

Doesnt look any better than a regular DSLR with a lens that fast. Not a fan of this guys color correction on his videos.

Either way there has been enough extremely good KX footage.

"Too good to be true" refers more to how clean the image is at ISO 12800.
The noise is absent which I would not expect for a image pushed that far in low light.
I agree there's enough good KX footage.

I finally had a chance to view the footage on my LG CX and it's just a bunch of crushed blacks and blown out highlights with no true detail to be found anywhere - no texture in the skin, the hair, anywhere - so I don't see what the big deal is. Frankly, lousy footage that could have been captured with a potato. It's utter garbage.

In Komodo-X I do see nearly the same DR as the Alexa35.
2 more stops in the highlights (color accuracy is gone at those 2 stops but it's not "clipped") and 2/3 less DR in the lowlight than the Monstro.

Very good news that...

I see your Test on Vimeo, it's very informative! By the way Is there any chance you could post your Tests to YouTube since there is still a problem on this forum of displaying Vimeo directly? I was going to wait for you to post your video here before doing so myself.

Did you just say the KX DR is comparable to the A35? That would be quite something. Your saying the x has two less stops in the highlights/it has the information in those highlights but not the colors? And 2/3 less in the shadows?

It’s close to but colors aren’t accurate at those 2 stops. But it’s incredible how it does retain infos until +9 stops. My testing with Alexa35 vs Monstro is that A35 has 3 stops more in the highlights but 2/3 less in the shadows.
