  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED FOCUS

I always find it fascinating when people bitch when we try to do something special for our customers.

For the Red One Camera owners, I think we have given plenty already by taking everyones cameras in for full value trade towards an EPIC, but I guess you want more?

GOD, Jarred, why haven't you guys found me a girlfriend yet in your spare time? Also can I borrow the Red Jet to take her out in whenever you slackers get around to finding her?

Wait, I didn't even see the price concession to RPP owners.

$400 Loyalty Discount?

WAY COOL - THANKS SO MUCH!

Don't like it? Then BUY THE RPP's and join the club! There appears to be NO EXPIRATION DATE ON THE OFFER.

See this device is a LENS ACCESSORY and they offered an unannounced or published LOYALTY PROGRAM FOR RPP OWNERS.

SO EITHER BECOME ONE NOW. or just buy the FOCUS for $19.000 less than us RPP owners had to pay for our special pricing.

Good point. in comparison to the price of the RPP set, 400 bucks is simply a courtesy.. with slight incentive.

I can't afford either, so i see little point in arguing. Sure, they could open it up to all of red family.... all of red family is currently r1 owners...

just curious.. How many R1 owners out there can't afford the RPPs but could afford the Red Focus?

Ok, now how many of you that can afford just the RFocus really really need it?

there ya go.. arguing over pennies.

when?????

sorry Mich! Red Null its not acurate by it self! BIG BIG Deception unfortunately I have one.

If you have a problem with your Red Null, it'd be fairer to give Mitch a chance to rectify it before making that kind of accusation. And just because your RED Null might have a fault, doesn't mean every Null sold has the same problem.

DigitalFX tested it and was very happy with it.

If you find the RED Null to be inaccurate, then there seems to be two possibilities:

Defective lens - contact Abel for help.

Operator error - not sure what you should do.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine who bought one told me he was very disapointed with the Red Null, that he and other guys had tried to use it and that it wasn't precise at all.

So I tried it, put it on the camera, activated 1:1 magnification and edge highlight, and started turning the backfocus ring. It worked perfectly, the right adjustment was very easy to find. After that he loved it, turns out he hadn't used edge highlight when he'd tried it...

Red Null is a great tool. However, I'd definately buy the Red Focus over the Red Null, now that it's (nearly) out.

If anyone ever needs support on a product purchased from Abel Cine Tech please feel free to contact me. If I am not the one to assist you I will find the person who is.

This category of accessory has got to be the biggest frustration of them all.

:emote_head_explode:

IMHO ... if this product had been telegraphed more openly, Red would have received more orders than they would have otherwise.

weird phenomenon...kicking back a few bucks to users who buy a company's high-end products, in this instance RPPs, is a somewhat standard practice - I really don't understand why this is even under discussion. buy it or don't, but there is really not much to complain about with the price point versus competitive products.

is there any update about the RED FOCUS release? I would really like to pick up one of these...it is not in the store yet, is it?

Hey Jarred,

How about a PL to Canon adapter for this baby because my EPIC-X is going to have a Canon mount.

Thanks

Michael T.

I wonder about this too. I plan on buying the Scarlet 2/3 and using my Canon L glass. There are other threads on this forum that seem to suggest my images will be as a result, and I quote, 'soft', due to the backfocus or the 35mm lenses not being made specifically for the 2/3 format, but will this Red Focus correct that issue? Are my Canon 35mm lenses going to be soft on the 2/3? That would defeat the whole purpose of me buying the Scarlet 2/3 for crisp 3k images, and I would be better off with the fixed lens... I am hoping that's not the case as I have nice Canon glass from long to wide angle. Anyone know?

warning: first-post alert- newbie here.

if you are using a 35mm lens on a 2/3rds sensor your images will look fine.. sure the microns are smaller of course so the resolution requirement is alot higher for glass with the Scarlet 2/3rds ( more pixels imaging in a small section of glass ) , but you are also using only the center of the lens on a 35mm lens which almost always is the sharpest, best section of a lens.

Since you explicitly state that you're a newbie, I'll take the risk of stating the obvious:

Your 35mm full frame lenses should produce nice pictures on a Scarlet, but the 2/3" sensor will result in a 'crop', meaning your wide angle lens will have a substantially smaller field of view than you're used to.

your comment makes me think that for narrative, a 2/3 cinema with tokina 11-16, 6mm & 8mm miniprimes a very attractive alternative to a fixed

but I will await your bundle pricing info. Hoping it comes in May!

Thank you for the explanation, for those of us who were wondering about our 35mm lenses. That is really great to hear, as I certainly desire those crisp 3k images. I'll plan to stick with the decision to buy the 2/3rds Scarlet then and add the 2/3rds lenses as I am able.

...
the RED FOCUS has an internal target, needs no room, can be set in the dark on a camera truck, and is a bit less subjective.

... And you guys havn't even heard the most exciting thing about it yet :)

Hey there Jarred

Please, it's time to spill. I've decided I need to have a collimator of my own asap, and just about to buy a competitor unless your exciting thing is really something uniquely "got-to-have"!!

Also, will there be interchangeable mounts to collimate RED's smart Canon and Nikon mounts - and importantly how much will they cost?

Regards
Eric
