  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED FOCUS

So Jarred... What's it gonna be tonight?
RED GUNNER? BOMB EVF? Mini-Zoom? Scarlet? EPIC?

Seriously though, how much longer are you going to keep these nightly announcements going?
I'm dieing of sleep deprivation.

I only use the RED 18-50 and 50-150, do I need this???

ya and what other new goodies should I pe saving money for that you will announce? :)

There is something else pretty special about the RED FOCUS, specifically the custom target within it, that we will announce soon..

Some kind of active, closed loop feedback system that tells you when it's correct perhaps?

That's what I think. If you look at the picture, there seem to be 2 LED lights on the front, one with an arrow saying CHECK BACK FOCUS. So if the other light is on, maybe you don't need any adjustment.

That was what I thought when I first saw it.

If I remember correctly and it was not in a dream, some mention was made that the Epic sensor would be able to "swing and tilt". If this is still true (and not just a wonderful dream), a calibration device that has targets corner to corner and top to bottom will be necessary to accurately reposition the sensor to the factory nominal settings. Varification of correct "flange to film/sensor plane" distance and paralellism is always welcome. It makes for a good night's sleep.

lol.. the RED FOCUS is not a NULL... or anything like it. The Null is just a wide angle lens. the NULL you need a light source and alot of room and a target that you need to setup ( and light )

the RED FOCUS has an internal target, needs no room, can be set in the dark on a camera truck, and is a bit less subjective.

2 very different products , And you guys havn't even heard the most exciting thing about it yet :)

So just like the Optitek Optimator then?

Not quite Rick

Not quite Rick

So just like the Optitek Optimator then?

Almost- Optimator still has the advantage of full sensor coverage, tilt and centering checking beside flangeneutral mounting system, onboard charger etc..
Except for the "secret" feature that has something to do with camera software I suppose.
Sooner or later somebody should do a flange tool shootout test, impartial as can be, other than this being the RED turf( with all due respect) so everyone is informed to make the best decision for their needs. I for one am all for it....

good things... thanks jarred

easy guys

the market is like a mother's home
always fit one more

and in this case happy to be red's device
thinking in my RED One's obviously
:Angel_anim: :violent5:

I think these devices will all work about the same so it's sort of a price game to me. You are setting your distance to a calibrated standard so you assume that the product is mechanically stable while it rattles around in your bag.

The red unit looks solid and is hopefully as rock solid as my RPP's mechanically. I like the price, the look and the simplicity. I also like the fact that Red always seems to take care of it's people when/if the next great thing comes along. If this is the "RPP" of flange focal length testing, count me in.

I am actually tired of "shoot outs" It's a tool, pick one. The SALT test was not really conclusive so a focus device "shoot out" is just more white noise.

Plus, Red has not let the entire cat out of the bag yet. They control the camera firmware remember.....

Funny... I first saw this thread just after reading that my NULL Target is about to ship.

Me the same Jeff, have been waiting for Null Target for such a long time, finally RED FOCUS is came out. What a ......

That is a much better comparison.

Here is the Target...

Thinking out loud. OK, so we have what looks like a Siemens Star which lets you check centre area focus and potentially indicates optical centre relative to sensor centre. But the weird asymmetrical white polygon - that has got to be something to do with checking sensor tilt//shift/rotation, but why is that exciting if the user can only adjust backwards, forwards sensor to flange distance?

Maybe automatic motorised tilt/shift/rotation adjustment - but that seems expensive overkill compared to tilt/shift/rotation settings being adjusted and fixed firmly in the factory.

Hmmm...scratching head...

Hey Eric.. good guess, but incorrect :)

Your other half must hate you at Christmas time Jarred

"Just stop hinting at my present. Leave it or tell me already!"
:leaving::willy_nilly: :mellow:

I kinda don't get the qualification for the reduced price....

If you own a PL mount camera made by RED, you can make use of this device. Right? Why RPP set owners and not R1 owners?

I'm with you on this one. As one of many who have invested a lot in RED already, and plan to upgrade to Epic I feel a little put off by this. This is one product that is universal and IMHO, should be priced universally for all RED customers. At the lower price of course ;)

Agree with you also on this point.

Self-Powered illuminated PL Mount Diascope for setting PL Backfocus/ Flange distance on the RED ONE / EPIC / SCARLET cameras.

$1900 Alone, $1500 for new/existing owners of the RED PRO PRIME set.

giggle. this is all just way too cool

EDIT: referring to Self-Powered and Illuminated of course

Is this the right thread to list my brand new NULL lens for sale?
