  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED FOCUS

Focus is still out a bit.. the (optional) software that goes along with it is still being fine tuned.

Canon and Nikon mounts will not be offered at first.

Thanks for the extra trickle of information, Jarred. Can make a decision now!

Software does sound interesting.

with the RED Focus be available with adaptors for Canon & Nikon so we can go from PL Cinema lenses to Stills lenses and know back focus has been setup correctly?

From Jarred's post they will be, but not initially!

Or a better idea of what the software does? We already have an Optimator (it's great and Jacek's support is fantastic) but I'm keen to know what this thing does. At the price it could be something we buy anyway.

Ooooh... I like the idea of the software if it does what I think it might.

If you have a single lens that might be off, perhaps you can bring up the pre-saved lens data (from your camera prep). You'll be able reset the flange distance just for that lens (or lenses). That would be a nice, in the field fix.

I made a simple sticker that does that- no need for software development.

A little perspective here- Let Red concentrate on what they do best-high quality image aquisition:wink5:

Red Team,
Since your Sensor will be adjustable (multiple axis) does your RED FOCUS have the ability to read the edges and help if the sensor is out of alignment?
Many people are anxiously awaiting this device.
Can it be used for Phantom and other Digital Cameras Genesis/D21/Alexa etc?
Can you give any other hints regarding the "software"?
Thanks,
Woody

Jarred,
Any further info? I am in the market for a collimator and would like to know what exactly RED is offering and a time frame on delivery. Software capabilities sound interesting and wondering if you could be a little more specific.
Thanks in advance,
Woody

Sorry for the OT remark, but Jacek, doesn't turning the Red One's collar adjust the backfocus variably depending on how how loose the screws are, therefore producing different results every time?

Yes when the locking bolts are loose you'll get variation(I estimate .001"-.004")
You can also mess up big time if you loosen them too much-it will jump threads and be completely off. Again- this is not a job for non mechanically inclined- never has been.
BUT when you tighten the bolts it will end up in the same spot. Every time. Guarantied. Basic physics/engineering:thumbup:

Self-Powered illuminated PL Mount Diascope for setting PL Backfocus/ Flange distance on the RED ONE / EPIC / SCARLET cameras.

$1900 Alone, $1500 for new/existing owners of the RED PRO PRIME set.

Hey Jarred

What's the status of the RED FOCUS?

I know the BUZZ is the EPIC/Scarlet but what about this tool that no one seems to want to comment on? I would think that these would fly off the shelf. I have witnessed first hand, how flange focal depth wasn't even close on some of the Red's that I prepped or have shown up on set.
Now with 3D it would even make more sense to make sure the flange depth is calibrated correctly.
Does ANYONE care to update this thread?

Morning John,

Technically it's "Flange Focale Depth" on a camera body and "Back Focus" on a lens. And just to make it even more fun it's "Front" (telephoto end) and "Rear" (wide angle end) focus on a zoom lens. Not that this has anything to do with when this flange depth checker is due.

Chuck,
Thanks, I actually do know the difference.

Coming along... RED FOCUS took a back seat to the cameras.
