  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Engineers are awesome.

Touché...

yes, I sometimes overlook the new tech, but maybe that processing could be put into the module instead of the brain. Not sure.

Broadcast module is back, but I can def see applications for the Broadcastmodule + the new (not yet really announced) option to have different LUTs on different outputs.

As to DEB, it looks kinda not so processor intrusive, but waddaiknow! ?

I think these LUTS are gonna be awesome for studio product photography, catalog, advertising, etc, all those places where the right color can not be hit and miss and you gotta know your getting it in a fore sure, calibrated kinda way.

So will 3d LUTs be able to load into cam or no? Not clear yet?

Not clear yet. Also not clear if we can get different/independent gammas applied to SDI and EVF/LCD outputs.

We will have to wait for details - but no matter those details are - it's fantastic that ACES is done and solid and RED is clearly moving in the right directions.

I'm stoked.

@david b

i can see much wider application than that. primarely in all compositing/vfx mixed-realities settings and for most films and tv series with a "normal" production budget...

Totally,

it will come down to who wants to be informed and how it can be implemented. All we can ask for are the tools. :)

3D LUTs are going to implemented and accessed via wifi on every single digital cinema camera made moving forward. Period.

The tools are here now - and more are coming very, very soon.

Stop worrying and love the 3D LUT. It will set you free.

David -

The thing about 3D LUTs is that you have to power to effect colors in a very, very high fidelity way. You can map any specific color value to a different value - or a range of values to a different range of values. You can emulate a specific film stock in a very organic, subtle way that could never even be approached with a CDL or even an RMD.

It's not some "dark art" reserved for super geeks and DITs only.

Yes - for years big post production facilities would bullshit their clients that only they had the "magic LUT" to make the clients DI look correct, etc. etc. bla bla bla - but now most good DITs have more knowledge of modern workflows than employees of large post facilities. That is a fact.

A 3D LUT is big spreadsheet. THIS exact value in = THIS exact value out.

There are more 3D LUT creation and editing tools coming to market that make it easy to create and edit 3D LUTs.

And there's TONS of crazy creative things you can do beyond emulating a celluloid film stock - as you can target and effect specific ranges of color values - like ... skintones :)

It's happening now.

It's not just about display luts and signal path workflows and color space transforms. That is the obvious. But that only scratches the surface of the power of 3D LUTs.

3D LUTs are a SERIOUS creative tool.

Mark my works - they will become very commonplace very soon.

Heh heh heh

Being unfamiliar with 3D LUTS but getting more excited by the minute, can you tell me how this will affect workflow? That is, after applying the LUT I want in-camera, does that look stay with the footage when loaded into an NLE, like Premiere Pro and/or Ae for instance. Do they have to put that capability in their apps via SDK or does it just work?

Luts are to color correct as pre-vis(ualtion) is to post-SFX

Part of it is getting rid of dailies and letting you see color corrected the image on set.

Part of it live broadcast of multiple cameras.

Part of it is seeing a color effect on set and being able to light for that effect.

So conceivably, for anything (other than a live feed) that needed editing, an editor would be all you'd need?

WHOAAAA

So you guys finally decided to work with ACES, thats rad, I love it.

Very important to this digi era.

We all have to work together for the best results. Archiving is crucial if we want everyones hard work to last.

What better than .R3D files with ACES

I would re-ask for a linear in-camera signal again, if this come true.

This is possible with a hack. I used this on the Dynamic Range testing with Stacey and it now lives on my Epic.

1) Enable linear in REDCineX
2) Save a look with linear gamma to the SSD.
3) Load the look into your camera.
4) Create a new preset that only affects Gamma and load the Linear Look.
5) Assign the Linear Preset to a button or hotkey.

6) Linear output!
