  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thanks for these tests Phil. Can you make test with strobes?

Coming. Maybe not tonight. I'm almost doing this in realtime. Almost. I don't have GPU acceleration for my tests :)

I wish I had CPU acceleration for my life!

This is great information Phil, thank you.

Just to educate the masses: for those of us who have never heard of a quarter wave plate or retarder, that's the other half of the circular polarizers. That's why Phil is joining it with the motion mount and achieves the effect - because you create a circular pola with it and a linear pola which is embedded in the motion mount.

Wikipedia gives you the more technical details if you need more proof:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarter-wave_plate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarizing_filter_(photography)

EDIT: and of course used in 3D rigs as far as I'm educated... Never built a 3D rig so this is on AFAIK basis.

Where can one purchase a 1/4 wave retarder filter as this seems to an important filter to have with the motion mount?

Schneider has them, as Phil mentioned. Probably the other big ones do, too. Check with your favorite reseller :)

They aren't the most common thing around by any manufacturer. Pretty much 3D peeps and other crazy folks would have been after them. I would contact Schneider directly. That's what I did.

Thanks guys. Eating a bit of lunch and then shooting some "out in the wild stuff".

Schneider should make a rota-retarder :)

I'm using mine in the OConnor O-Box WM matte box which on 19mm rods has a full 360 degree rotation. Although you really only need maybe 90 degrees.

However, a rotating screw on would be pretty slick and entirely possible.

I will opt for a 138mm round... That will cover all applications.

Yep. For matte box users and "tapers" that's the good stuff.

Turns out we actually have a custom round one in our inventory we had made for a 3D feature. We will put it in the tray Abel makes that we use for our rota-pola's - http://www.abelcine.com/store/RotaPola-4x5.65-Kit/

Woof. That's a tray worth more than it's weight in gold :)

I am with Phil, I would like to find a screw on one to use for run & gun with Canon lenses. an 82mm would work nicely and then step down rings for other lenses.

A simple screw on, non-rotating might also be fine if you don't mind "hollywooding" it into the desired orientation then maybe locking it down with some gaff (although I use electrical tape usually if I have to attaching anything to a lens).

All just depends really if you want an option that's usable with or without a matte box. I'm still going to use mine the vast majority of the time, but for lighter weight and compact setups you could certainly go the screw on route.

I'm thinking for RC copter, gyro stabilizers, handheld, etc.... shaving that weight and having this control right in the mount is pretty tremendous in it's own right.

That's a good point I didn't even think about Phil. This MM would be great for octocoper guys in daylight.

And don't forget that you could use a 100mm filter holder like the ones from cokin/ formatt etc.
if not all of them, the formatt one at least can remove the stages you don't need which leaves you with one of the smallest, lightweight filter holders possible.
