  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED DSMC Motion Mount has arrived!

Heh. I get Russel Crowe, a young Anthony Hopkins (I have a great story about him even saying that), and Giovanni Ribisi fairly often.

[edit ... btw this is a great thread, for sure sticky worthy]

Does anyone know if the PL motion mount will work with the 35 and 50 mm master prime anamorphic lens?
I also have a red prime 18mm, and the MP anamorphic goes a bit deeper then the rpp 18mm ... and on the red.com website it says:

I might be able to answer this question in two weeks actually. I have a suspicion the Master Anamorphics work with the Motion Mount, but I didn't have the Motion Mount on when I had them on my Dragon a bit ago.

This has been a great thread full of really valuable info on the motion mount. But I was wondering if folks using the motion mount on the Dragon sensor could their experience - similarities or differences they may have noticed. I am seriously considering a motion mount for my Epic Dragon and wanted to get some updated feedback. If this info is already contained in an existing thread I'd appreciate a link.
Thanks, Joe

I shot with the Motion Mount and Dragon a lot back in January on a job where we needed a bit more "remote" control over exposure from away from the camera. Images look fantastic, the project should be out in about 5/6 months and I'll be able to post a grab or two from it.

Not much difference in use when working with it compared to MX in reality.

Thanks Phil for the feedback. I was wondering of you noticed any difference with the different shutter modes and how they react to Dragon VS MX, but it sounds like your getting similar results.

Hey Phil,

Hoping you see this and reply, or anyone else who wants to add.
Besides fine tuning incremental adjustment of ND, what is the advantage or disadvantage of the motion mount electronic ND vs say physical ND be it, standard style front of lens types or built in camera type AKA mini and amira?
Are there situations where the electronic version is going to cause issues?

I was shooting with a DP recently who had never heard of this thing and didnt want me to dial it in. He even went so far as to take the lens off to look 'inside it' and couldnt work out where the ND slides down...

The electronic nd can not go 100% transparant. So if you are low on light then that will be an issue and you then need to remove the mount and replace it with one without ND. So simply put your camera loose a bit of light sensitivity.

Also as described in the manual the motion mount can create artifacts when shooting wide open on fast lenses. This in combination with the above limits your camera light sensitivity even more with a soft border where you trade lights against possible artifacts.

The nice thing about the motion mount and the reason its not called the digital nd mount or such is the fact that it can do a sinus wave kind of light block for each frame. This makes the camera able to create a motion blur that most people find more appealing than the normal cmos square curve.

So basically if you like shooting at normal stops, not to open and if you got enough light to do so then motion mount is not a bad solution for ND. Then also if you shoot action stuff with lots of movement and especially camera movement then the motion mount is a really nice thing to have. But to fully get the motion effect you can not use it as an nd at the same time. As the flicker glas function is then limited not to use its full range. So then you need motion mount and ND infront of lens.... Yes most DPs do get confused. So far I never really managed to explain how it actually works to any of the dps i worked with. :)

That is all true and its a great little machine. I own two of them but I cant for the life of me understand how it works and what positive or negative affect the magic has on image making, especially trying to explain it to someone else.

I had a situation on a short film recently where we originally wanted to shoot handheld and keep it real but some of the takes were quite long and awkward and my 'figure eight' handheld vibes were becoming more like fffffigggggurrrreeee eeeeeiiiiggghhhtsss. Once in the edit the director decided he wanted things to be solid and stable so did a bit of work on that. Wondering if there is a benefit of the global shutter to reduce jittery hand held artifacts while still maintaining a pleasing blur to the camera movement and action.

Soft shutter might come in handy for 360deg time lapses where you may want as much blur as possible?

I am being lazy and not wanting to sift through 1000000 post on this thing but wanted to ask a couple of questions.

I have a motion mount. I love it. I have been using my EF motion mount with a Canon 16-35mm stills zoom recently. For the most part I have no issues, that I know of until I go to the wide end 16mm of the zoom. As soon as I do that, my image goes much darker and blue sky (for example) gets super polarized style saturated. I have not done any tests to really see whats going on, as I have been busy. Just wondering.

Reading through the manual. It talks about the mount acting as a linear polarizer? Why does Phil suggest using a quarter retarder or whatever it was?

Also reading through the manual, it talks about shutter angles and iso when using the mount. I found this a little confusing. For the most part, I have been shooting anything between 4,5 and 6k 25, 50, 75, 100fps. I should also point out I am only in ND mode only and never go high ND on the mount (to the point where it goes yellow)

I should pull some frames to post, straight from camera to show what I mean but I dont really have the time at the moment.

I have the "new" Motion mount September 2017 running it on Epic W Helium. The color shifting is insane, I thought this problem was supposed to be addressed in the latest version? Anybody have this same issue? I have also experienced a yellowing ND grad looking effect at times when I max out the ND. Bizarre, anybody else?

thank you

HI Brook:

Did you receive the new model of motion mount recently? Did you get the PL motion mount? I ordered a canon motion mount in beginning of May, and I still keep hearing that they are not ready. I trust my bomb squad rep when he says those are not shipping. So just want to confirm with you that you did indeed recieve the latest model in september. Because if that is true I would like someone at RED to at least give us some idea as to what is going on with the redesign/production delays on those motion mounts

Curious if your still using this guy on your day to day?
