  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Collective – Mammoth HD

Thank you Morgan. The Helium gallery and submissions have been building and as noted I'll be adding a diverse group of Dragon/VistaVision 8K over the next few weeks.

Just added a few frame grabs above to the link on the Dripping Honey from my 1st VistaVison 8K sessions...

VistaVision 8K

update on the in-house RED Weapon/Dragon VistaVision 8K sessions...

a lot of new work shot this last week on the VistaVision 8K special project.... here' s a few frame grabs from the week.

1st is the Broadtailed Hummingbirds that migrate to the front range of the Colorado Mountains every year..always showing up as the temp warm...but being Colorado we always have a few late spring snow storms - so it gets cold and very snowy (this week we had a storm dump over 2 feet) - love these little birds and how tough they are... so RED 8K VistaVision using Canon 100mm, macro, Zeiss Otus 85mm w.ext tubes, Zeiss 135mm w/ext tubes and the Canon 70-200mm - the snow sets were shot over a 36 hour period.. the spring green shots were done 2 days before the snow.

this next week - get out of the studio for the most part and start shooting a few wildlife in the field and big landscapes - so telephotos (150-400 + doubler) and wide-angles/normals (20-85). Absolutely love the LARGE Sensor and how it looks with the glass. 8K is amazing to work with both the VistaVison and Helium but add the VistaVision sized sensor and the glass becomes that magic of large format... look forward when more VistaVisions ship - but also the next generation if RED continues the larger sensor development (i.e. the 645 from the original RED development list from the 2007 roadmap)

spent a good portion of the weekend working on a few more studio macro sessions with the 8K VistaVision (as I told Jarred this morning - I'm completely sold!) the DR and amount of detail is amazing and insane - love working on these super rich and deep - pliable raw files!)

So here are a few frames from the MHD Antique Tool Gallery: a rusty Adjustable T-Square (approx 100+ year old carpenters square)

this whole set is a static camera with light sweeping across the frame/subject.... processed in REDCine-X -> IPP2.

another update on the MammothHD's in-house - 8K VistaVision special project sessions... gotta say I absolutely love the large sensor and the DR of the VistaVision handling of the full-frame glass combined with the new IPP2 processing!

anyway here's a few frame grabs from this weeks sessions.... all 8K either 23.98 or 59.94 projects - with some slow at 23.98/59.94fps

ok - back to studio for more....

..today's 8K VistaVision update - been a busy week -> shooting all over from the desktop studio setups to the top of the Colorado Rocky Mtns at 14,000'

so here's a quick set of frame grabs.....

Colorado (this last weekend) - 'Spring' at 14,000' (this is where we shot part of the RED Collective#6 at...)

up next is finishing the review/select/edit and prep for the Raptor Portrait series - more owls and hawks, etc... and back out into the Colorado high country. 8K is very addicting - and the VistaVision sensor with it's 'full frame' size is even more so... pushing glass (Otus and Canon) to it's intended edges :)

thanks Blair... worth the wait!

The VV sets the bar.

A truly magical camera. Rent mine - it pisses me off constantly to be so busy that I can't just run away with it and shoot stuff ... alas ... my day will come :)

It's in Alaska this week - but back on the 15th ... looking for it's next gig :)

on the 8K VistaVision sessions - mostly critters this last week - finished up the 1st set of Raptors and had a great session with butterflies.... the birds are almost all shot with the Canon 70-200 with/without a 2x extender and the butterflies are all the Canon 100mm macro with/with out extension tubes from 12mm to 36mm.... have several more sessions scheduled with the butterflies, raptors and reptiles...

a few frame grabs from the 8K originals:

upcoming this week - more macro and studio work and then back to the Colorado landscapes/scenics...

one of the thing that becomes very apparent in working with the VistaVision Sensor (full frame and the glass) is the fall-off in DOF - love it - especially with my macro work.

a quick note on the VistaVision Sessions.... today spent some time in the Colorado back-country 10,000' and above - shooting BIG landscapes in 8K.. so here's a frame grab on one of the clips - SouthPark, Colorado - from Kenosha Pass. Most of the day was shot with the Canon 11-24mm zoom - and FYI the 11mm does cover the VistaVision 8K sensor... biggest problem was exposure - as this was shot at the lowest in camera ISO of 250 and with no ND and/or polazier wide lens and curved front element - ended up shooting at f-23 and shortening the shutter duration a bit to fit the metering and 'stop-lights' in camera. BUT with the new IPP2 grading option saved the shot (thanks Graeme!) - not ideal -> so looking at several on camera control options - ND OLPF's, larger (huge) matte box filtration, etc - amazing how wide 11mm is when looking at covering with front filters....

so here's one of the frame grabs from the Colorado BIG landscapes... 15mm (canon 11-24) - VistaVision 8K
MHD_rCD8_vvSouthParkCO_01x.jpg

graded in RedCine-X -> IPP2

Thanks Jerron,

been getting several options on filtration for the 11-24 - so looks great and also specific to that lens!

as to the blue in the shot - being at elevations excess of 10,000; helps - along with a bit of added saturation... but the cloud separation is all in the grading using IPP2

and a few more frame grabs from todays Colorado BackRoads... 8K VistaVision sessions... Canon 11-24 (see the note above on the exposures...)

haven't been shooting 'Super-Wides' in awhile - loving-it!

Love the cows! It's C.W.A. Cows with Attitudes. Their hits include F*** the Pulled Pork and Straight outta Cowtown (Thank you Gavin!) Gonna go 187 on an undercooked chop.

Straight outta cowtown, crazy mother heifer named beef cube
From the herd called Cows with Attitudes.

Thank you. I will be here all week. :)

In all seriousness, the cow pic is awesome!
