here's a few of the new 8K VistaVision additions over the last month... mostly macro work....

and a new series on Vortex's - water whirlpool - still working on the basic controls for the flow and spin - but getting the basics in place should be starting the finals on this series in the next week or two.... shot in 8K and 4K (from 4fps to 120fps)

and a non-RED new addition to the MHD Libraries - 'Social Unrest' - featuring protests, riots, etc... in 4K

Last month I killed my trusty Canon 100mm macro (ruined the front element's coatings... ) So pulled out my ancient Nikon 55mm and 105mm macros (from the early 1970's design) that do not offer 1:1 magnification without extension tubes... and on the Monstro VV with the tubes was getting a bit of vignetting...

So just added the Sigma 105mm Macro and it's great! Bright, Sharp and great contrast and is 1:1 - works great with my extension tube sets with NO vignetting on full frame Monstro and also works with Sigma's 2x-Teleconverter to make it a 210mm Macro too - great versatile lens and very nicely priced... if you're looking for a macro - highly recommend.

and then a few non-food Macro's.... the Paperclip is using the 2x-Teleconverter to make this a 210mm Macro (bit more room for lighting) and the added compression

been spending a fair amount of time 'Above Tree Line' at 14,000ft here in Colorado the last few weeks - 8K Monstro VistaVision... with the critters and big landscapes.... this set was all on the Sigma 24-70mm ART.

and great vistas... temps were in the 20°F with winds around 25mph on this day - so damn cold for a summer afternoon.

with fog layers down below at around 7,000~8,000ft - with the light creeping thru the passes...

a few down in the meadows amongst the trees... and macros

and always a bit of studio time for macros....

the more I shoot with Monstro the more impressed I am with the complete image - from dynamic range and color space to the lens/sensor relationship. and as much as I thought Dragon-VistaVision was great - Monstro is better.

Now what you've asking for...the 4K/UHD version is now online:

Vimeo 4K/UHD - The MHD VV#2 Sessions -> besides more of everything - shots like the Mt.Goat doing the shimmy you see individual hairs and dander flying off...

The YouTube 4K/UHD version is now up... not as well encoded as the Vimeo version... (Provided both with the same ProRes master to encode from) -> banding and compression noise on YT... but here it is for those who like YouTube.

Well - this was part of the learning Resolve project - so here's the 'FINAL' edit on the MammothHD 8K: The VistaVisionSessions #2 reel - 8K in a 4K timeline with a few dynamic scale and re-positioning added.... also solved most of the compression artifacts from the earlier 'online' versions by uploading a ProRes422 master and letting Vimeo re-compress for display.

Vertical Footage - the end use of todays video footage covers a multitude of markets.. from film, broadcast, web, signage and more - Aspect ratios cover the gambit of standard horizontal for film and 'TVs' in various aspect ratios (1.7/1 - 2:1, 2.37/1, etc.) to billboards and instore and museum displays that utilize the vertical formats (in a single page, poster or portrait orientation) most of the time these are filmed with the camera in the vertical mode - the majority of vertical displays are using HD or 4K LCD Panels.... so with 8K masters from 'normal' horizontal shooting you can still deliver 4K Verticals (UHD) from a 1/4 crop from the original 8K and fill the 4K/UHD screen - as a simple crop or go with a pan/scan to follow movement, add movement or change the view... MammothHD has had our Vertical Galleries since 'HD' shot vertically.. and has been adding 4K and 6K Verticals - and as the 8K Galleries have expanded - the crop from 8K that fills the 4K/UHD Vertical panel requirements... so the options and resources of mastered footage have expanded...

The Vertical formats has been around a lot longer than camera-Phones... based off of the 'Stills' use in single page ads, posted, advertising and signage - with flat panels hitting the market over a decade ago... the ability to mount these in any orientation opened the use of video and motion. As noted above the markets tend to be in the signage and instore-point of sale promotional materials - but we are seeing more use in billboards (ie TimeSquare, etc) and informational screens in museum installations and the like. At some point I would not be surprised to see a film that was presented in a Vertical Format (if not already)

So - keep in mind the vertical option for original acquisition (ie turning the camera for full resolution... or as in 8K the crop factors....

Changes at MammothHD:

Relocated to western Montana ! (the front range of Colorado was becoming to urbanized) - Updated info on the MammothHD website.

Once the office is finished getting organized and wired (over the next week...) will be adding a backlog of submitted material and shooting new material in 8K-Monstro. Near Glacier Nat'l Park, Nat'l Bison Range, Flathead Lake, Bob Marshall Wilderness Area, Canada's Waterton Nat'l Park, Idaho and more...

the new neighborhood.... as I start scouting the immediate area...
