I attended the LA Final Cut Pro Users Group (LAFCPUG) meeting last night where Phillip Hodgetts gave his best guess on what was in FCP X.
Release date: probably around the 21st of June - last day of Spring.

When I asked him if there was Red footage support, he said "Maybe." "If not in version 1, definitely in version 2."
Why may it not be in version one? "Codecs for 80 percent of the users will be in version one. Codecs for 20 percent of the users MAY not be in version 1."

The bottom line is that we will just have to wait for the release.

Is version 2 like an update, or something we would have to purchase?

Not likely. Would probably be a free update a month or two later. Usually just means they were tinkering with it and it wasn't quite ready for initial release.

Yeah, it would seem kind of odd that Apple would tout FCP-X as a 4k NLE without supporting RED. :}

I dunno what it is. I was at the NAB meet when they "launched" FCPX and they seemed to be very, very specific in NOT mentioning Red. As you say, they talk 4k - what other cameras do they see that coming from?

My experience with previous iterations of FCP is that support for additional codecs is just a free software update.

Red and Apple have always played well together.

Just a gut feeling, but I suspect that they might be making a joint announcement sometime soon.
By sometime soon, I mean on or shortly after the release of FCP X.

Yeah. Actually, maybe I am just spacing here but, what other digital motion cameras are currently producing 4K?

It would shock me too if RED wasn't supported in the initial release because the RED One is THE 4K camera.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Seems like a very Apple-y move. I'm about one "log and transfer" away from switching to Adobe completely...

Have they? Seems like Apple never really lived up to many RedUsers' expectations that began when the Apple logo first appeared on the early Red web pages. Yes, there's a workflow and has been for a long time now, but it came with a few hiccups along the way and never achieved the straight-to-timeline status that Adobe did some time ago, even with what looked like a late start. Adobe's presence on RedUser is obvious and they are clearly after our business. Apple? Not so much.

It's hard to tell whether Red is frustrated with Apple or not, considering the famously tight non-disclosure agreements Apple insists on with their partners and suppliers, but I wonder if they are. I think Apple has been given a pass by many up until now as it has become progressively clearer that they were re-building FCP from the ground up on the presumption that they would finally be able to work with R3Ds inside the program. I know I have.

But after these many years of development, it seems strange that Apple wouldn't be able deal with R3Ds upon release of FCPX. So that's one issue. But even if R3Ds do go straight to the timeline in FCPX, will it be limited to 4K? With whatever lip service has been given to 4K in FCPX without mention of Red, what about 5K? I've heard no throwaway lines like "4K and beyond" tossed around. And it would be a great way to signal that Red's on board.

I hope an Apple-Red announcement is forthcoming, but isn't it possible that they haven't come to terms with licensing agreements? You know, business? Two strong tech companies, two strong leaders?

Seems like there's two kinds of people: those that like Apple and those that don't. Never the twain shall meet. :w00t:

Since, at least to me, it seems likely that Apple will support R3Ds (cuz there aren't any other 4K digital files around) we can now complain that they can't handle 4.5K and 5K. :willy_nilly:

Of course, we don't know that. But we do need something to complain about, so... :emote_headwall:

Thank goodness it's going to be released soon.

We got tired of waiting and made the jump to Adobe.

Are r3d files the only codec that supports 4k resolution? No, so saying FCPX supports 4k does not mean it natively supports r3d. And if it doesn't I'm going to be giving adobe a bunch of cash soon.

Im on the edge with FCP too, Adobe is beconing. on one hand theres the "its more consumer level, friendly to use and automated" then theres the "supports 4K and uses all of your 8 cores"

Doesnt seem to me like those two worlds meet. i reckon its going to lean heavily towards one or the other.

yeah at $299, its either revolutionising the price of editing software, or exiting the race quietly.
