  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red and Final Cut Pro X (10)

It's hard to tell whether Red is frustrated with Apple or not, considering the famously tight non-disclosure agreements Apple insists on with their partners and suppliers, but I wonder if they are.

Could it possibly be the other way around? Manufacturers are frustrated in dealing with Red. One major manufacturer told me, that Red insisted, that "you have to earn our cooperation", when they had an issue with the SDK. Really? May be Apple is not willing to use RR? GPU debayer is allowed by every manufacturer, except Red! One manufacturer was even forced to take the GPU debayer out, if they ever wanted to get the new SDK. It's easy to blame Apple, but nobody really knows the full story...

I must really be the bastard child around here, and will probably get googly eyes for saying it. but honestly, I think it's silly to be working in native r3d. granted if you're on your own and don't want to deal with extra storage and have the horsepower to do it, go for it. but i'm a major proponent of offline online workflows. why bog down the system when you don't have to? it's so much easier to do laptop editing with offline codecs. and honestly I want the fastest rendering, fastest and smooth buttery cutting i can get. I don't want to be bogged down with any rendering, and concentrate on the edit.

I really don't care about messing with metadata, and changing looks while I cut. i really feel that all gets the way, and when the creativity flows, the footage has to move at the same pace, and working with r3d directly as good as it's become, it can still inhibit that process. especially when you don't have the horsepower, fast raids, big gpu with oodles of cuda cores, rocket. etc. and when the cut is done, and the story is told, it's so seamless to online with r3d. the metadata is so robust, everything snaps together in the finish, and that's where you start worrying about looks, and quality etc.

I'm really looking forward to the new fcp, if it lets me cut more fluidly and intuitively, i'm all for it. transcoding is like synching for an editor. you're gonna do it sooner or later, it's something you learn to get used to. and luckily there are plenty of tools that make that process go a LOT faster.

Obviously not, but I guess that was my point: nobody knows the full story about the Red-Apple relationship. It just seems that whatever issues there may be between Red and FCPX (Apple), it's likely it has more to do with "won't" than "can't," from whichever side that may be coming.

No. I run the SDK program and this is absolutely not true. I'd love to talk to this manufacturer to fix whatever went wrong. Anyone with a serious project can sign up for our SDK for free. There is no "earning our cooperation". The whole point of having an SDK program is for other parties to use it. Why would we not want people to use it? We've always invested a lot in workflow and cooperation. I can't tell you the many times I've been emailing with SDK users in the middle of the night or the weekend trying to figure things out or fix things.

I ask again, becuase I am really curious: what other source for 4K images is there? What am I forgetting?

Hi,

some movies are scanned at 4k resolution, and the Phanton 65 Gold is 4k (4096x2440 I believe and 65mm sized sensor)...And Sony also have a 4k camera in the way (you probably know), and probably a few other companies have the 4k in the horizon...
I don't know if apple will or will not support r3d (and wont speculate) but I think that the whole point of saying its a 4k NLE it's just to be "future proof" from a industry perspective, since the film industry is walking to the 4k zone (even thought its already a reality for quite some time for a lot of people).

I'm very interested in the abilities of this software and cautiously optimistic. Perhaps Apple is simply referring to the ability to playback 4K ProRes files in FCP X.

Hi Rob.
I had a discussion with a person last week, who was directly involved in the conversation I had mentioned. I know a person at Red who had said that particular sentence:-) And that wasn't some small manufacturer...
And the fact remains, that many manufacturers would love to implement GPU debayer, but are not allowed. But, I guess, that is a different story...

Please email me (rob at red dot com) so we can resolve this

I'm with you Tom. I have no real problems with editing ProRes. Especially when the files are transcoded on-set by the DIT - we don't even have to get involved with it at all. Like you say, better to have an NLE that moves along at whatever pace you want to set and doesn't greet your commands with a spinning beach ball - even for a fraction of a second. That's why I can hardly wait for Lightworks on Mac;-)

That Resolve and Nuke and AE can work with R3D's works with me.

Me too. Now that RCX takes a multicam EDL and rebuilds it perfectly I'm in R3D heaven!

Real time R3D work flow is the future. End of story!

Will be Mark, don't worry, sooner or later... I hope in our life time, but will be.

Well!

I come back from a weekend of shooting a horse show, and sure enough, Apple releases FCP X.
They even folded Color and Sound Track Pro into FCP.

At the prices that Motion and Compressor are being sold, I suspect it will not be long before they are also folded into FCP.
By the way, did anybody notice that Compressor will now encode for Blu-Ray?

If anybody has downloaded FCP X already, please let us know if it will currently support RED footage.

Very informative link.

It underscores the assumption that FCP X is "incomplete."
I suspect we will be getting incremental software updates as they become available.

Taking my epic to the apple store to see how it works with fcp x hahaha

oh man as a 10 year user of fcp it sure stings I think I'm going to bring my epic to the apple store tomorrow and ask how to import my 5k in fcp x.

I'd love to see that!

"Ok no problem sir We'll get this sorted out right away... So does that shoot 720p or 1080p?" :emote_whack:
