  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED 8K S35

Seems like every rock-star director can now get a custom-made camera.

My new goal is to earn the right to buy a RED Elsie... 16k or more by then. '-) '-)
Hehe. Yeah, you've made it, when you can get your own Custom-RED. :)

I don't want to be tempted. I am just recovering from my camera upgrade addiction and starting to feel clean.

Sometimes, being wild for the sake of being wild is lame. It's the same with cars: there's only so much that you want to do to a nice car before you mess it up.

Agree completely. WIth all due respect for Michael Bay, his work just isn't my cup of tea. For "summer blockbuster" action sci-fi pics, I'll take the ALIENS / T2 mid career James Cameron over every TRANSFORMERS any day, both in terms of aesthetics and in the broader cinematic sense as well.

I would have liked to see a Candy Apple Red or something in a color changing nano finish personally. The hot 80's neon color is part of the branding since the camera gets buried in gack and you want folks to see it in the BTS shots. Hard to tell cam brands apart from 10'+ away sometimes. Bet none of those in the FB pic spend very much time in Depot buying cheapass Ryobi tools so didn't recognize the color. Was there myself today buying roofing crap. Such a peasant I am ;-)

agreed -- there are many more tasteful designs out there which would have been sufficiently distinctive, even from a distance, without being so loud and radioactive vomit colored. Granted, TRANSFORMERS is aesthetically blaring and screams "radioactive vomit," so I suppose it fits

I'll take one even if it's hot pink

To squeeze 8K into a smaller super 35mm chip necessitates new (smaller, denser) pixels. I’ve been told that smaller does not mean any compromise in imaging performance, quite the opposite, these are “better” pixels.

Why are people questioning if this will work and be available for WMG?

Because MG are locked out of getting 8K VV Dragon, so 8K s35mm Helium needs to be less power hungry or the "path" described might only mean you have to pay for CF anyway in order to get Helium, which means even if there is a path, it's not really an upgrade because MG owners got the MG because we couldn't afford to go with CF so the "path" is pretty much DOA for us if it's like that. I do not consider getting CF in order to get Helium to be a path for MG owners, that would mean the only way forward is and has always been to get a CF, while everyone else is left behind. A sensor upgrade should be a sensor upgrade. If this isn't an upgrade like between Epic MX and Epic Dragon and if it means that our brand new MG cameras needs to be traded in then that's not really a path for MG owners.

Jarred confirmed a direct path for upgrading the sensor, from MgW.

I think that still remains a sensor upgrade path even if the boards in the camera will need an upgrade. If I remember correctly that was the case for the Dragon upgrade also. Even if it was a sensor upgrade, other boards were upgraded inside the camera body also.

So, unless there is some kind of a huge optimization process going on inside the MgW body, I think the boards will need some king of upgrade (mybe not full CF potential) in order to get us 8K for a reasonable compression scheme.

Definitely, which is what I meant. If the upgrade isn't just as it was with MX to Dragon, the path isn't really a path from MG to Helium, it's more of a "you bought an MG or an MG upgrade, now go back and do it again to CF in order to be able to upgrade to Helium". If the upgrade means you need to go CF it's not the path that was promised. This is similar to what happened with Epic MX and Weapon. The choice was to upgrade to Dragon in order to be able to upgrade to Weapon, if you didn't you were stuck with MX. This meant there "was a path to Weapon" from MX, but it meant a two step upgrade. If it's similar between Weapon and Helium, meaning you need to upgrade to CF anyway in order to get Helium, then that's a bit of a bad way to treat those who thought Weapon was the way to a future sensor and who paid a lot to be able to get Weapon, going from MX to Weapon in two steps. If Helium needs CF, that makes the choice to go MG rather useless in terms of staying on track with development.

I think the thought here is still that we're not in need of moving to CF. New sensor was always touted as "for Weapon / DSMC2 bodies" for the longest time. Also, with Epic-W being Helium... I'm not worried about the MG purchase choice. RED is moving quick, but they won't leave a new product behind like that.

I am perplexed as to why you keep saying this. From the beginning, Jarred said there would be a path to the next sensor for Weapon Mg. Period. When asked about a path to 8K VV, he said no, he did not consider there to be a path. Later he said something to the effect that his answer of "NO" was technically incorrect, because you could (at great cost) upgrade a Mg camera to CF, then go to 8K VV, but it wouldn't make any sense. So physically possible? Yes. Recommended? No. Why would he suddenly reverse course for you to get your Weapon Mg on Helium when he clearly stated there would be a "path". When he says path, I don't think he means upgrading to upgrade. YMMV.

It's also possible that the 8K Helium sensor isn't the "next" sensor that Jarred had in mind.

In any case, the upgrade path from Weapon MG to Carbon hasn't changed, and it's been clear since the outset that the CF Weapon has the processing power required to handle the 8K data rates, so it's not like adding the option of a smaller 8K sensor changes anything in that regard.

What it DOES change is that it becomes possible for Red to provide an 8K sensor that doesn't require medium format lenses.

Jared has stated that the Mg Weapon will be able to the the Helium. What he didn't say is if the Mg Weapon Helium would be 8k. It could be a 7k version for all we know at a slightly smaller sensor size. Or helium data is not as big, and therefore an 8k sensor would not need as powerful ASICS in the Helium environment.

What I'm most excited for is to see how good the difference is in terms of IQ. It has always been a pretty decent jump Mysterium > MX > Dragon... I wonder if Helium will be much better in terms of DR, Noise, Low Light performance, etc. Although smaller pixels tend to mean less low light ability, I am hoping there are not just more pixels but better ones.

How would react the guys who are waiting for the top of the line 8kVV if the Helium means 1 or 2 stops better DR etc? I guess Rakesh is right when he says it's maybe not the next sensor but another sensor. Just a different flavor with same image quality, but sharper. Perfect for CGI.

He said 8K, Helium and upgrade path from MgW in the same sentence. For me this is pretty clear. Do you guys have reasons to believe something else?

Mg will have a path to Helium 8k s35 yes.

Ugo, There is a difference between VV and s35 in terms of looks so people who want VV are still going to want it, while people who want s35 will be able to get that. Its still possible that we see a VV Helium.

Andrei, Sorry I missed that in there. I guess maybe it will either be a less data intensive sensor or will require additional ASiC upgrades.
