  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

they have been unavailable in the store for some time now...i somehow remember there were some problems?
i am very interested but obviously only if they are trouble free....
i heard they cannot be read in the usb 3 reader bus powered? on AC only?
also what is the advantage? frame rates are the same, compression is slightly better? does anyone know the difference?

512GB mags have faster write speeds, meaning lower compression ratios at higher frame rates and resolutions. Better quality though I've never personally noticed a difference from this in my work, but for larger productions I can easily see the appeal. I'd give RED their time to get it perfect.

you are right about needing to the reader powered to read the 512GB cards

I believe I read that these will be necessary to record higher frame rates at 6K on the dragon sensor in addition to those minor gains in compression...I could totally be wrong though.

I have a 512 mag and so far no problems -- in my opinion the chief advantage comes when you need long runs at higher compressions. (I sometimes record theater performances.) Or in wildlife situations where you need to roll to catch some chance happening that might be lost during a quick mag change.

The increase in speed is not dramatic. It does allow for incrementally higher frame rates in a few cases at the high end -- but mostly it allows the same frame rate at one bump up in compression. Like instead of shooting ++ fps at 4K at 8:1 you can shoot the same frame rate at 7:1 -- along those lines. It is not strictly linear .

It is the lowest cost per gig when purchasing new. On the other hand it puts a lot of eggs in one basket. If it weren't for a particular necessity for the occasional continuous run of over an hour, I would regard the increased speed as having minimal advantage over a normal mag. But I could imagine being able to operate with a single 512 and a 128 and /or a 64 fairly efficiently in almost any situation where downloads are a possibility.

i like the idea of being able to shoot at a slightly better (lower) compression at still high fps.....and that will eat up storage...so the lower cost/gb comes in handy....i don't like the idea of a powered reader but....

The reader can get power from another USB port doesn't have to be mains power

One thing to be aware of is Workflow on the set. With 512GB cards it take approx. 1.5 hours do transfer via shot put pro. you need to have other media ready to keep shooting while the DMT/DIT transfers and backs upFor some projects like events, theater and hi-speed shoots 512 card are critical to have, for dramatic projects with shorter takes, I prefer to go with smaller cards and stay caught with transfers and backup through out the day.

I just had a 512GB card die on me so I somewhat regret that I don't have more smaller cards. Very scary if I would loose 512GB, basically a whole days shot. If I had 4x128GB then I would "only" loose 25% which would be a lot better.

Just a word of caution, otherwise I also believe that bigger is better :)

i haven't had any problems with the smaller cards and haven't heard about anyone having any problems really....but somehow the 512 keep coming up with issues...i guess red hasn't really totally completely figured it out yet....maybe that is why they are not available?
i will probably go with smaller cards for now until the dust has settled....
thanks for all responses...

I have 9x128, and constantly shoot them until they are full. Onto download and here we go again. Never a single glitch. This size and 256 for me are great. Not too many eggs in one basket, unless you have a specific reason why the 528 would be a good idea...

Keep in mind that the 512s were designed for the higher throughput IO on Dragon cameras.

The the current Epics aren't able to push these cards to their limits.

Is buying a 512GB SSD card taking a risk?
I know Panavision Paris didn't want to go with the 256GB because they said they where "not reliable". I never had any trouble with the 256GB.
I think there are a lot of scary myth when it comes to our industry.

Wonder how it died out Andreas? Could you use it afterwards?

Pat

Hi Patrick.
The 512 died because of a a problem with the cable to the Red mini station. It got lose while copying so suddenly the drive didn't get power anymore. After that I couldn't access it again.
I can tell a bit more after repair etc is done.
I don't think the 512GB are "risky", but it does make me a bit nervous to have a whole days shoot on one card.
Is it possible to record to 2 cards at once btw? Can you have 2 ssds at the same time? With the Meizler I guess this would be possible to do a proxy backup.

The meizler and proxy module will use mini redmags which are smaller and only meant to record proxies.

If you add a rear ssd module and keep your side ssd module you can install 2 SSDs simultaneously but I think it only allows for recording to one at a time, no sure it even lets you span a long shot across to the second disk if the 1st runs full...

I ordered one of the first ones and have been using it non-stop for a while. A lot of long take surf ( high impact ) as well as interview. Never had any issues. Also, it cuts transfer speed in half. It also offloads via USB 3 without bus power to USB 512SSDs without issue, via MacBook Pro Retina. Isn't to say they are immune to problems but I've put mine through it's paces and have been more than happy with it.

so you can download the 512 to your retina with the usb3 station without AC power?
