  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Real names...

Look at your own avatar and you'll see why some of us may want to stay somewhat anonymous. :yikes:

-cp

I don't mean to intimidate anybody. Plus there's nothing someone could do on this board that could make me want to hunt them down. Now if someone shows up here looking for trouble because of something I said...well then I can't be held responsible for your actions. I don't have much of a problem putting my full name on here but of course my user name wasn't that much different. Drew599.

I know its hard for alot people to understand the Real Name thing...

We are all friends here.. new friends and some old friends, and we just want to know who we are talking to. You wouldn't go into an event somewhere and walk in and introduce yourself as " Bubblegum Jesus ".. you would probably introduce yourself with your real name.

It always seemed weird to me over the years when people would walk up to me and say:

" Hey Jarred, nice to finally meet you, I'm Jason Smith "

me:silent pause.

" you know, "Pookie Bottoms" online. "

me: " Oh!!.. yes!! Pookie Bottoms, nice to finally meet you!

lol, so true! I've been Shawn Nelson since the beginning, which has constantly put me at a disadvantage every NAB. Every time I was also wondering who the fuck "pookie bottoms" (and his friends) were :-)

Right-o Shawn... Great example: I remember meeting you for the first time, and knowing exactly who you were and it made the conversation so much better. Felt like we were already friends.

There are people here too.. the guys that help, like yourself, like the Duclos' and the Brooks and the Evins', that, in the long run, have benefited professionally from people knowing who they really are here.

It of course also makes people nicer and behave a little better ( usually )

I DEFINITELY agree. I meant disadvantage in the individual conversation, they knew exactly who I was and I felt bad for not knowing their name (though it was their fault for not being named), but in the end being real name has definitely been good for me.

Not sure if it makes me "behave" per se. Though I did fess up to Duclos to his face that I used "hacksaw" to describe his Tokina mod. Though it's all good now, as after the apology he's now informed me that his hacksaw is named after me :smilielol5:

"Pookie Bottoms" and "Bubblegum Jesus?"

That's no diet coke in your cup, is it? :-)

I've been a long time fan of real names...in part to seeing how well "another board" runs that has real names. Glad you are doing it.

I'd like to throw in 15 or 20¢ on the subject. If I echo sentiments already offered, please forgive me.

I've been active on enough internet forums to understand the impetus behind a real name policy. There are way too many disruptive folks out there and the quality of comments increases dramatically as anonymity decreases. I would like to believe that we are all friends here, and it is nice to know all the people in your community fairly well. The idea comes from a very good, well meaning place... However:

This is not just a meeting among friends in some coffee shop or what have you. This is an open, public INTERNET forum. The importance of that distinction can not be exaggerated. You could physically go to a user's group meeting, or even a town hall meeting with the president of the united states and not suffer the same exposure as you do engaging in conversation on an internet forum with your real name attached.

This open forum can be read by anyone in the world with net access. It can be, and is cataloged, searched and archived quickly by a multitude of sources. Anyone can join and post, and up to this point there have been scant few requirements of those who wish do so. There is no pre-qualifying process. So far you may be thinking "OK, I have no problems with that. I like that." and on its face I would agree with you. Next I would ask, When was the last time you did a vanity search? Were you comfortable with the quality, content and amount of information publicly available that is related to that search?

Did you know that if you bought a home in the last 10 years or so, anyone in the world could very likely pinpoint your home address in an instant? If your local newspaper publishes an online edition, then this is nearly guaranteed. Maybe you think that is no big deal, but consider this; If you have ever identified yourself on this forum as the owner of a $20,000 Red camera, anyone in the world can easily read that and instantly identify your home address. That fact could just as quickly and easily make you a target for home invasion. Maybe that is paranoid. Perhaps the odds of that happening are quite slim, but I don't make a habit of painting targets on my back.

Have you ever pissed off some psycho behind the wheel, or at work and thought "Thank God he doesn't know where I live." Well, If he has your real name and is motivated enough, he could find you. On the internet, you may unknowingly be exposed to thousands of psychos who needn't make any effort at all.

It is probably wise to consider any info about yourself that has ever existed on an internet source as having a life span well beyond yours or your children's, and again it is instantly searchable. Over time, as that information accumulates, the lack of privacy could become quite unnerving; that is my prediction, anyway.

I would love to one day meet you all and introduce myself, but that introduction wouldn't likely include my address, phone number, DOB, entire work history, mother's name and address... you get the picture. I dig the real name idea, but only if this were a private, non-searchable meeting place. I have no problem sharing personal information with people that I know. I don't however go about publishing that info in a durable medium for the entire world. There are just too many potential negatives.

There is currently no mechanism in place here that I know of that verifies the identities of users, so maybe the entire debate is moot. I do however prefer an open, welcoming or at least civil community, where personal details are available on a need to know basis.

As a side note: When we joined this forum we each made a decision whether or not to make our email addresses accessible to one another. I am curious to know how many users choose to make their emails private, but are willing to make their real names public, and what is the rationale for such a choice.

Scott... while I certainly understand your point of view, I hope you understand ours. You have a decision to make. You can change to your real name and continue to post or be removed and continue to view others posts. Either way... there are no hard feelings.

There will always be sites that don't require real names and are safer. This isn't one of them.

We have asked politely for many months and debated this issue countless times. The clock is done ticking.

Best,

Jim

You make some valid points if RED required you submit your full name, but as you have rightly noticed, RED only requires first name and last initial. There is plenty of anonymity in that. I just think this is an important distinction to remind the forums of as it may save more needless rumination on this matter.

Jim, first off, I agree with you completely on real names, i've been real names since the beginning. But Scott is already complying with the reduser real names policy. All his concerns are about not being able to identify and google someone, that is easy addressed by having your last name be an initial here (as he has done) or by not having any last name (as the mods Ace and Brent do). The funny thing about people bitching about the real name policy is that it isn't a fully real name policy, just a "some portion of your real name" policy. Which I'm okay with too.

i too think the real name policy is excellent and could care less about my privacy in this forum... for the very reasons Scott cited, those privacu concerns DEFINITELY help control obnoxious post abusers.

All the professionals on here benefit from a real name... i too found Duclos, and countless other vendors through search.

HANDLES are for gamer sites. My fav alias is Trish Peabody. somehow killing someone online with Miss Peabody in Unreal Tournament, seems to more effective and excellent psyops.

REAL NAMES benefits far out weight privacy risks imo... always good to use the "treat every post like a POSTCARD in the mail" analogy. best not to write what you dont want others to read.

Sincerely
Trish Peabody

Scott, in respect to owning equipment its pretty easy for the thieves to find out who has equipment as most people advertise.
As an owner operator you may want to keep your address secret.
The UK experience is interesting to note. A gang run by Eastern Europeans has been operating on and off for three years in the uK. They have raided facility companies on over 60 occasions, sometimes raiding the same place twice. But no owner operator has been targeted (as far as I am aware). Police believe that an industrial estate is an easier target than a residential property.
For instance I began parking my vehicle in front of my garage to prevent ram raiding, one of the techniques used by these robbers.

I've always used my real name ever since day one of CML in 1996 and have yet to be targeted or sought out despite numerous pro HD postings (which was very rare in the early days) and the occasional brush with a looney driver.

Perhaps we are not that important to warrant the attention!

Taking responsibility for what one writes does indeed temper and shape one's ideas.

The first name last letter idea is a twilight zone of anonymity in any event.
Why not full surname as well?
Is a separate anon forum a good idea?

Oh, I don't know about that. It seems Jim was telling me differently.

I get it Jim. I respect your decision, all of the great things your team is doing, and the enormous investment that you are trying to protect. I just don't think it is the only answer to the problem is all. Active mods and carefully drawn policies can just about accomplish the same goal. I just wanted to add my voice to those who have said the same.

As for hard feelings... I don't think that a little ill will would be an inappropriate response to being kicked out of such a cool clubhouse. :crying:

There is real value to interacting with you all. It won't be an easy decision to be sure.
