Real names...

Yes these are all good. the First name last initial should be good enough for those guys in protective custody.

Full Name (First and last, or first, middle, last, etc, etc)
First initial and Last Name
First Name and Last inititial.

This is a good policy. POsting under your real name is a must. Did you all show up a the REDUSER part in vegas wearing a mask.

If you can not stand behind who you area and what you say then dont's say it.

If you need professional advice, contact someone off list. Many people would help you out.

I think any group of professionals in a forum like this should be transparent.

My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!

But seriously, since my user name is already first initial, first four letters of my last name, that's Ok, right? I mean, who *couldn't* figure out who I am from that?

After all, it was good enough for the Netcom people back in the 80's.

Oooops! I think I gave away my age...

Should probably have a space in there somewhere, lest you partial name folks be mistaken for using a fake name when the hammer comes down :)

And, yes... my middle name is Edward. I like long walks on the beach and getting caught in the rain.

I've used my real name from the beginning since that's what I was asked to use. I try to respect the rules of an online forum if I expect to participate. So, I'm covered. :)

What I don't understand is all the people with 1 or 2 posts now posting on this thread that its an OUTRAGE and DELETE THEIR ACCOUNT...

I would understand someone who has over 500-42,000... but see everyone who has that amount is either very open to real names, or already has their real name..

Jarred, Jannard, the RED team all have their real names, and they aren't afraid to write things, errors, mistakes.. David Mullen, a seasoned and amazing DP uses his real name, and isn't afraid to ask questions... so I ask, why are you?

Obviously some people won't like it...

However, keep in mind no one is trying to invade your privacy, etc... This is a privately owned and operated forum by Jarred (Landmine Media Inc). As such, the operating guidelines are set according to the tastes of the owner. There are lots of places on the internet for folks to go, and no one is stopping anyone from going there, or from starting their own little corner of the internet.

People like to use the "free speech" and "privacy" arguments when it comes to online forums, etc... Those just don't wash though... Again, it's a privately owned place, and the owner can set the rules as they see fit. Likewise, no one is being stopped from voting with their fingers, or from exercising their rights by starting their own little corner of the internet and choosing to run it how they see fit.

The good and bad of it has been discussed through and through, so there isn't much point in continuing to debate that, as it is not going to change the policy. I'd respectfully ask that we try to keep this thread to folks who actually have a question, need clarification, assistance, etc concerning the changeover rather than as a place to debate the merits of such a policy.

It is what it is... Can never please everyone. Sorry about that. You either respect the given rules/guidelines of an establishment, or decide that you wish to take your traffic to a place that more appropriately suits you.

If you like to read reduser for the information, you can still do so without being a member. REDuser is not official tech support for RED, so there is nothing forcing anyone to use this site. It is 100% voluntary, and the rules to participate are REAL NAMES, and respect for each other, no personal attacks, etc, etc, etc.

...
And to those who shout loudest that those who worry about privacy have something to hide, well yes I have something to hide. My private life...is...exactly....that. Private....

But that's more of a general issue and doesn't necessarily apply to the reduser question. The issue to me is clear. Can I voice my opinion without fear of reprisal or abuse? When my real name is attached other dangers suddenly become real too. Business can be affected as well as personal stuff. I don't mind attaching my real name to my posts but I see the enforcement of it the thin end of a dodgy wedge....

Although I have had my real name in my signature for many months and even before pretty much everyone who read many of them knew my real name and so obviously I didn't have a problem with it specifically with regard to REDUSER, so will comply.

However, I can see how others may not (and myself on other forums) so as a matter or general principal I don't like the policy.

I do think it would be better that that they require real names to be registered but not published. Also some forums require that the first 5 posts be approved by a moderator before allowing regular posting which seems a good way to minimize trolling and spamming.

I think Jarred has actually made this fairly painless by giving people the option to use first name and last initial.

I understand people's quest for privacy, especially these days. There's a lot of bad stuff going on with private information, probably even more than we realize. The internet can be a magnet for these ruthless folks who want to abuse it.

But, I agree wholeheartedly that this forum needed a real name policy. For those of us who have bee around since the beginning, we have seen a lot of abuse on this site. Good threads completely derailed by trolls or people hiding behind fake names. The search functionality of the site has been hampered because lots of good info is sandwiched between crazy posts that have nothing to do with the thread.

Personally, I like getting to know people on here and associating them with their real names. When we see each other out at the Reduser event, it makes it a lot easier.

To the point someone made about it affecting your career, I don't think that asking a question on here is a bad thing at all. No client has ever said to me they would not hire me because of a post on Reduser. In fact, the opposite is probably true. The way I treat this forum or any other forum is that I only say what I would say if someone was standing in the same room with me. I treat people with respect, even if I don't know them or their background.

Anyway, I welcome this new policy and I encourage everyone to look at this as a positive thing, especially with the flexibility Jarred has offered with the way your name is displayed. This may not solve all of the problems on the site, but it should get it going in the right direction.

I applaud this policy. It doesn't affect me as I have used my name from the beginning, as I do on other boards. I do hope that it will weed out the less mature individuals.

Just checking in to make sure that I'm good with my current username as it is my real first initial and last name, I just didn't use a space between them. This is the same ID I use on many forums including Apple and Adobe.

Does anyone really expect that anything over the internet is private?

There is no privacy. You post anything anywhere and you can expect that people will be "creeping" you.

Should probably have a space in there somewhere, lest you partial name folks be mistaken for using a fake name when the hammer comes down :)

According to these rules, Jim Jannard had better send in a new screen name or he'll be banned from the forum. :sifone:

I'm interested in how landmine is going to verify all the screen names. There's almost 22,000 users, and I would guess that only 1/2-3/4 go by the real name standard.

So do you look for names, or look for non-conforming user names. I would assume performing the latter would be easier....

I'm guessing a Perl/PHP script to look for names w/o spaces (I think most, if not all, user names with a space in them are real names), and then regex the rest against a dictionary of names?

Of course, there's going to be a LOT still left. So I suppose making a list of fake usernames, and make sure theres no valid ones in there, and then make a script to read all the names and deactive them?

I do a lot of this type of stuff for work, but never on the order of 22,000. I usually work with a dataset of about 1k.

I'm not of the "remove my account" bitterness and think it's fairly painless to use name/initial, but I just don't understand the need for it. Why is this required? What is requiring this going to accomplish? What precipitated this to be the new rule?

Just to be clear, I did go ahead with the change and sent Jason an e-mail request. I guess I just don't understand the reasons behind the change.

Since I'm just a screenwriter lurking here to improve my camera tech knowledge, and not expected to know squat, I'll offer to strawman any legitamate cinematographorific questions that may be embarassing to the photoilluminata.

I'm under my real name and my real email is on my IMDB. No fee, no favors, just remember me when you need someone to make up new words to add to the English language or your movie's dialogue.

; )

Why won't anyone from RedUser simply tell us what's prompting this change? If it makes sense and is clearly justified then I'm sure everyone will see the logic in this change of policy.

I know I'm not high in the posting rankings but I do use this forum on an almost daily basis. I have no problem signing off posts with my real name or with RedUser knowing who I am but as I asked earlier, why this and why now? I don't see what this does to help police the forums or stop people who want to abuse them do just that. And if it doesn't prevent any of these issues then why else do you need this information?

Thanks.
