You should do a Black Calibration every time you install a new build.

Remember to use a full battery and make sure you stop down the lens and keep the lens cap ON.

make it a sticky and add a how to tutorial video please.

we will start adding the notice in the release notes.

Tutorial really isn't needed, you just goto the system/setup/maintenance/BLK SHADING and follow the instructions on the display. ( the onscreen display tells you about lens cap)

I was on a couple of Phantom shoots and the tech would black balance after every couple of shots as the camera heated up. I was a bit surprised by how often it had to be done. Is this something that we will need to think about/do? Or should it just be something that needs to be done on new builds.

don't goto sleep just yet...

So I should start to gather the things around the house that I will break while shooting them at 120fps... cool!

no.. the Phantom has a totally different issue where there would be a visible split after a period of time, and you would need to do a new black/white cal. I think they made it better, but back in the day you had to calibrate the phantom every 30 minutes or so.

Red is alot different..

Yes you need to BB the Phantom every now and then, several times during the day. You get visible noise unless you do this, and I prefer to do it almost continuously.

Thankfully, it's extremely simple and fast to do a BB on the Phantom, and it's one of the main functions in the operating menu. You just cap the lens, choose BB in the menu, click OK and it takes approximately 8 seconds to perform the function.

It's not a big deal, really.

But if I leave the cap on, won't the pictures be really dark?

This is a standard procedure. Basically, among many other things you need to figure out those parameters that are effected without any input light to the sensor -- for e.g., there is always some dark current out of the sensor, even in pitch dark, as long the sensor is on. These parameters need to be properly offset.

One thing that is surprising for me is that Red black calibration takes minutes. I don't know what are they calculating, but normal parameters should not take that long to be calibrated. A few seconds, such as what is reported for Phantom in the post above, is more reasonable.
