  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Re-grade your footage...

I'm getting "parsing" errors when trying to open R3D files. So far nothing will open in the latest REDCINE-X.

The open menu item is for open is for opening RedcineX projects.
To open up R3D files, use the file browser and drag them into the bin.

We'll make that clearer in the next build.

I certainly still cant export either stills or clips the render pause/resume button is de=activated in the batch list menu. been grading since last night need to render out. Am I doing something wrong? the snapshot goes to the batch list as well does not save to my file output location

Fabulous example. I'd love to see a RedSpace/RedSpace version to compare as well...

Agreed Brook.

I'm finally getting an hour's peace here to go through some more of my old footage and re-process it with the new REDSpace/REDGamma/FLUT™ and I'm really enjoying seeing how it makes my old footage better.

Graeme

It's a very useful tool. I actually kinda wish I could open DSLR stills with it to see how well it compares to what I'm able to accomplish with my still workflow. At first blush it certainly seems to handle midtones better than anything I use. The knee doesn't seem to get that "trashy" look that often comes with over-modifying levels.

I don't know if I've done something wrong. While the FLUT™ pic is certainly more vivid and it's easier to get a natural image with it, there's obviously more noise in it. Pull the gamma up and watch his jacket. Take a look at both blue channels.

Can that be? Maybe noise reduction isn't working in FLUT™ mode in the windows version?

I'm a little confused. Isn't one of the points of RAW to have a very gradeable image?

That's exactly what the "before" images look like: very gradeable but not very useable as is. But when color correcting, those same images can be made to shine.

Is the new color science doing anything that can't be easily be applied during a grading session?

I imagine the short answer is "Yes." But a little more explanation would be nice. :)

If I am planning on doing a full grade down the line with a real grading tool, is there much benefit? Or is it mostly aimed at people doing RedCine grades?

I've gone through about 20 clips, processing them at full res. I see an increase in contrast and an attempt to fix the reds and skin tones (which always looked a bit off) - but to me it's pretty easy to get the same result with "old Color Science" footage with a few After Effects tweaks.

Is this mostly a contrast / S-curve thing with a slight color balance fix? Revised functions of how those Bayer sensor values map out to the RGB pixels spectral sensitivity-wise - or just some color remapping done further down the line? I know it's a "new magic color science" but I'd really appreciate a candid explanation of what happened.

The only guy historically trying to give us real info about each magic color science update is Art Adams - although it's speculation of course since he has no idea of what you're actually doing.

I'd love to hear the real story from RED - or at least an explanation that's a little more in depth than "it's magic".

I only ask because you guys have so much free time on your hands ;)

The new colour science aspect is vastly improved calibration of the camera (and necessarily extended to work with M-X and future cameras) way beyond what we did back with B20.

REDGamma is a new philosophy in gamma curves that attempts (and we've been shown this attempt worked) to make a curve that's as gradable as REDLog, has extremely smooth highlight rolloff (Álex Montoya images above show that), and looks "nice" both in camera and as a post starting point.

FLUT is a new control (for very fine ISO / mid grey adjustments without inducing clipping) and an underlying technology that facilitates all of the above, and indeed was necessary to make the new color and new gamma curves work.

So Bruce, it's a whole re-write, from the ground up, of RED colour science and image processing math, with an emphasis on accuracy, precision and improving the image in terms of colour accuracy, highlight roll-off and avoiding unnecessary clipping.

Thanks Graeme! I'll look closer for the improved color calibration - that answered my question of why it is better to re-run stuff even if you were doing most grading outside RedCine.

RE REDGamma - I was already using the curves tool in REDCine-X to do something similar to what REDGamma now does. So not seeing as much benefit there. But nice to see this as standard.

Anyway, see you at Red Day! I was too busy working to make it to the CML thing ;)

BTW, I'm assuming we can sneak in whisky provided it meets your quality standards...

We give you the "user curve" tools to allow you to either modify the existing standard curves or to build your own. But we think REDGamma is a very much superior starting point to that which we've had before.

To me, the other benefit of REDColor/REDGamma is that it offers a standard starting point for your footage, that looks good, and offers a great grading starting point. This helps remove indecision on what setting to use.

:001_unsure:Hi Deanan, do you guys ever thought of bringing this beautiful apps in line with Autodesk Smoke, just by adding to its actual capacity to grade and multiformat exports/conform; the ability to edit a whole feature in the timeline and do some Fx powered by a sort of super RED Rocket™. This idea may well ends the problems with some 3rd party editing package and this evidently for a price. Just a thought.

My take on New Color Science.

Graeme, new RedcineX rocks! Love the new wheels, of course LUT. Makes first light grading simple and fast. Speed improved with this new build too.
Is it possible LUT will also be also implemented in third party software like CS5?
I don´t have audio on PC (Windows 7) and can´t output quicktime. Normal with this build or is it only my PC?
Thanks a lot!
Marc

pushed and fine

pushed and fine

i pushed masked areas of this here with new redcine and FLUT™ up to iso5000

original is shot with classic red 18-50 t3, open, some candles and a dedolight, ... (this is commercial stuff about a feng shui collection), shot today

the right side of the table was very dark...

its absolutely usable - very less noise.

great new tool.
