  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven vs Scarlet-W

Given how much you re getting for your buck with Scarlet W. The fact that it shoots 5K, has new olpf, internal and ergonomic improvements, and it has a future path - there is really no logic to spending about the same for Epic X. The images out of the SW will be superior as so much work has gone into the improvements. The SW package seems to have most of what you need to get started.

Hey Luca! Welcome to the forums. I think I've seen some of your posts over on the magic forums; which ones do you frequent? I'm just a magic hobbyist myself (and boy I haven't practiced in forever!).

Anyway, I'm planning to step up to the Raven from my Scarlet MX in the next year or so. I want the Scarlet-W because of the larger sensor size and swappable mount, but I'm currently using EF glass, and the Raven will fall in my price range sooner. I figure I can easily resell the body when I need to step up to the Scarlet-W. And also, I think the Standard OLPF is the one most people will prefer anyways. I'm not interested in the others.

HI Kenneth...yes I often write on the "green forum" you know ;)
So the raven has the standard OLPF installed right?
Thanks
Luca

I own EF glass and will go for the Raven.
Two questions:
will the new (I assume) side handle be programmable to control iris settings?
Has anyone gone from DSLR, the 5D in particular, to Red had any problem with the differences in crop factors in term of global thinking as you approach a shot. My widest lens is a 17-35, which is plenty wide for a full frame sensor.
I am just curious about the mental adaptation there is to make.

A 35mm is still a 35mm lens. No matter what you throw it on. The field of view will change slightly but it wont be so drastic that it will change the way you go about lensing. Just take a couple steps back :)

I think this depends. If you're shooting at 4KHD, then you're at nearly a 2x crop (in FF equiv). That's a pretty significant difference in lens options. It's actually the main reason why I'm debating upgrading from Raven to Scarlet-W.

I would say reds DICM2 side handle will for sure be able to control iris.

I came from 5d to Epic to epic Dragon. Had no problems adapting to the crop factor, I do tend to shoot 15mm zeiss a lot on the epic/dragon. Thinking zeiss 15mm or perhaps better yet the canon 11-24 will be pretty key for quality wide shots on the raven.

If thats the main reason you want to go from raven to w you might want to reconsider, because your only going to get .5k more out of scarlet. Raven=4.5k Scarlet-W=5k

If you need different mounts/motion mount, want 300fps up from 240fps in 2k, ability to swap OLPF's and that extra .5k go with Scarlet-W.

Keep in mind that I said that I shoot 4KHD, which makes the added horizontal area of the sensor useless to me. As such, Raven is only a 4K camera. Upgrading to Scarlet-W is basically a jump of over 50% more resolution (from 8.8 million pixels to 13.8 million), and from 2x crop (Raven) to 1.6x (Scarlet-W). On the wide end, that's pretty significant.

Also, both Raven and Scarlet-W are 140MB/s. They booth shoot the same framerates when in HD modes.

Isn't 4.5k on Raven a super wide format- essentially useless for all practical purposes?
Doesn't Scarlet W have 5K 16:9- very useful for all practical purposes? ;-)

Yes

Yeah, Scarlet's ability to do 5K Full Frame and 60fps at 4.5K Full Frame makes it much more desirable, at least for me. I shoot wide screen / 2:35 all the time, but it's nice to have it full frame so you can do some vertical re-positioning.

I really wish Scarlet had 60fps Full Frame in 5K / Super 35mm. That would be amazing. But APS-C 4.5K 60fps is still pretty good.

I absolutely hate watching wide format on a TV screen with the bars top and bottom. Not cheeky, not unique, just &*^%$# ;-)

Coming from Canon DSLR's to RED

Coming from Canon DSLR's to RED

Hello ALL, I'm currently in the mark for something new. I've been shooting with Canon DSLR's for a few years. I own the canon 14 2.8, 26-35 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 2.8. As I've been reading / skimming through this 12 page post, I've gathered some questions (See below). I've been very interested in RED for a long time but when I saw the new Sony FS5, FS7 and the black magic Ursa mini I started looking into those. Clearly black magic isn't in play due to their lack of commitment to release a camera on time. The sony FS5 looks like complete garbage and the FS7 is great but I'm not a fan of Slog. I shoot a lot of outdoors, exploring, landscape, action / sports video so frame rates and having WIDE shots are key for me.

Now to my questions.

1. Is the Raven FF?
2. If yes, is what format's is the raven FF?
3. If it's cropped what format(s) is it cropped in.
4. If any of the formats are cropped (not FF) what mm would a 14mm translate to?

Hi Mike, I'll give it a go.

1. I'm assuming you mean FF35 or "Full Frame DSLR" sized. The answer is no.
2. Raven's sensor size is: 23.04x10.8mm, maximum resolution: 4608x2160
3. It's closest to Academy 35mm film in width, it's actually a bit wider. Sort of in between Super 35mm and Academy 35mm.
4. Crop factor is relative to the format you are starting from as a reference point. If we are talking FF35, the crop factor is 1.56x, so you'd be looking at 22mm if considering maximum HFOV. If starting as S35 Full Aperture it's about a 1.08x crop factor, so around 15mm.

Here's a useful chart.

Hi Phil,

I love your FOV chart, but 2 quick quesitons

1) Would the Canon 5D III Full Frame FOV be right around where the 7.5K is?
2) The Canon 7D APS-C at 1.6x FF crop, would be slightly wider than where the 4.5K marking is, correct?

Thanks for any info.

Thanks Phil, this help. So when I stick my Canon 14mm on the Raven it will be at 22mm? Is this for all formats 2k, 4k?

It depends on the aspect ratio. Raven has a limited vertical resolution of 2160p, which is 1.56x, but keep in mind that's a 2.13:1 aspect ratio image, which is rather wide for conventional use.

Here are the more common crops (in FF35 equiv), as noted in the Tools section of the Red website: http://www.red.com/tools/crop-factor

4K 2:1 = 1.89x
4K WS = 1.95x
4K HD = 1.96x

This means you're 14mm will behave similar to a 27mm (although the FOV remains the same).

Dropping to 3k or 2K results in further cropping of the sensor. The 2K Pro Res however is downscaled from the full sensor, so you don't have to worry about additional crop there.
