  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven vs Scarlet-W

Yeah I definitely see that. Just curious, what glass are you shooting on? I just finished my set of Zeiss ZE, but I'm already looking at some Leica R's haha
im sure ill break down and buy the sigma 18-35mm, but i have the contax primes, russian lenses and a canon 70-200mm(which id sell if sigma comes out wth an ART parfocal compliment to the 18-35mm, like a 50-135mm or something.)
i think zeiss and leicas are both great options…im going for zooms for my smart mount lens control stuff and primes for my ones with a "look"

Yeah, with a Raven, that Sigma 18-35 would be essential for me. I'm a big fan of Contax lenses. It was a tough call between those and my ZE's. I went with the ZE's just because it's easier to get a good set, and there's a 25mm f2, which I really wanted for the Raven.

I'm definitely looking at Leica R's as my next set, though.

This is a somewhat random question, but has anyone had experience with the DSMC2 base I/O V-Lock expander? it looks as tho my Vmount batteries wont fit in it.. mine are a little wider than a RED Brick. Currently using Lanparte Vmounts. anybody used the Vlock expander with other batteries besides RED bricks?

if i already didnt start with all zeiss and have a set of hasselblad zeiss for when the time comes, id go leica too for my vintage glass…
there was a ridiculously good set being sold on here not to long ago. not rehoused, i like not rehoused to keep it small and personal.

That's a good question. I didn't notice it was so narrow. I think my GMP will not fit.

hmm, good eye!

We'll need to know the clearance width of the v-mount plate.

I'm about to pick up new batts myself;
for obvious reasons, hopefully, that info gets posted soon.

Whoops forgot it wasnt even out yet ha
But yeah, dimensions sure would be great.. Hint Hint

Having a Raven package on pre-order myself, must admit i had a couple hours of head-scratching after this announcement .
I believe the most important aspects are:
-the interchangeable mount/ OLPF
-a "probable" future upgrade path to (6k?) weapon

Not sure it would justify the switch in my case, but will keep an eye on this Beauty for sure ;)
No matter which one fits your needs, the DSMC2 lineup is starting to look terrific !

Good find. That makes me a little concerned. I have 3 v mounts that are not RED bricks.... hopefully that doesn't become an issue. Would really love to get that v lock expander with the Raven

sounds like someone internal might want to show us how the main battery company's products fit!
i never thought it would be an issue but some people seem to see that it might be.

We've used numerous V mount battery brands on REDs over the years, and never had an issue. Cant imagine there'd be one now! RED is pretty committed to the universality of V-Mount.

I mulled over changing my order to Scarlet but Raven seems to make so much more sense to me. My FS7 has a strong client base of its own with people who wouldn't want to use me going back to a Red ecosystem and I would have to sell it to get the Scarlet, whereas I can get the Raven and introduce it to clients alongside the Sony to show people what they could be having.

Once I have gotten them on board I can then sell up and switch out the brain without ever losing a job.

I've given this some thought and here's my take.

I deliver for broadcast in 16:9 HD, yet clearly prefer shooting in a 4K+ source to get the cleanest result possible. The Raven is perfect for this, with the only downside being the limited FOV of the smaller sensor. Other than that, Raven is damn near perfect. However the 4K broadcast spec is looming around the corner, and Raven is limited to 4K in 16:9. Scarlet-W however has 5K, which would make for much cleaner 4K deliverables.

Were on a tic-toc cycle, and next comes the new sensor, I'm guessing in 18-24 months. Given that Raven is only a $6k brain, which means it may not be eligible for the sensor upgrade. Even if it is, it probably won't make sense financially, as the camera will have devalued by then, and upgrade cost plus installation will be nearly the cost of just buying a new brain and keeping the existing brain as a B cam.

So the question is, what is more cost effective over a 5 year period? Buy Raven for the HD deliverables and upgrade to a new camera in 2-3 years, or buy Scarlet-W and future proof?

I usually want to stay with current tech within budget. Raven is suitable now, and when the next iteration of sensors are released, I'll want that as well. So for me, I'm sticking with Raven now, and then will buy the updated model when the 4K broadcast spec is finally required.

Scarlet-W addressed everything that I think Raven lacks to be the perfect indie owner-op camera.

So I'd say, totally worth the $4500 price bump.

It doesn't matter how wide your batts are, the V-lock mechanism itself is universal so they will fit, they just will be sticking to the sides a bit, not perfectly in line with the body.

It's about the position of the rails near the connections box. The rails are very close from the small wall. If the width outside the rails (from the rail to the side of the battery) is too big it will be blocked by the connections part.

In September I've placed deposit for new Raven to be my first RED camera.
I work mostly aerials with big drones and in recent times I have more and more demands for flying RED and Alexa mini.
This year I've worked for few high budget movies and commercials with rented Scarlet, Dragon and Alexa mini and decided it's time to have my own Red camera.
I was looking to buy some used Scarlet but then Raven came up and I was more than happy to order it. But now I'm totally confused should I change deposit for new Scarlet Weapon.
Mostly it will be used for aerials and some ground gimbal works. I don't have any Red accessories nor any PL lens.

Please help me to decide what would be better for my needs?

I've been wrestling with the RAVEN/SCARLET W choice since the W was announced. I've got financing in place for the RAVEN and would have to re-start the process if I moved up to Scarlet W. Aside from that, I would only be gaining 20% in resolution. That could be important if I should need to reframe a scene (either camera would serve as my B camera.) I don't have a Scarlet Dragon so the Scarlet accessory package 1/2 off deal wouldn't apply which would make it even more attractive.

For a 4k finish I think the low compression rate of the RAVEN will provide a fine image able to cut with Weapon footage so I'm good there. However, if this was to be my A camera, I would definitely choose the Scarlet

It seems like you answered your own question there at the end. I would stick with RAVEN in your case. It's been stated a few times that RAVEN was more geared toward arial/gimbal. I know you stated you dont own any PL glass, do you own canon? if so may be another reason to stick with your first choice.
