  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven Queue Put Together

Because your FOV would be ridiculously small. No thank you.

It would be awesome to hear if a non-dealer has been allocated recently. This thread has been pretty quiet for a bit. That could also be due to the fact that pre-orders are spread farther apart now.

That's exactly what I and others have been trying to get out of RED directly, but there has been no updates on the matter from RED since late September. We also have pre-orders listed for every week of Dec. 2015 so they aren't really spread out that much - even so, we should have seen some kind of traction on Dec. 2015 pre-orders by now and there has been none.

I emailed my rep yesterday, she said there is a lack of sensors although this might well not be new news rather a general statement. I did message Brent about 2 or 3 weeks back and he said they are going out and that my 11 Dec order should go out relatively soon. It would be great to get a proper update however im almost enjoying the drama of the wait now ;-)

Will make it all the more special when it does come :)

Any idea what would be the FOV if a Helium sensor is cut into the position of Raven's sensor?

Helium is 8192 x 4320 @ 29.90 mm x 15.77 mm (Diagonal: 33.80 mm)
Raven is 4608 x 2160 @ 23.0 mm x 10.8 mm (Diagonal: 25.5 mm)

if I didn't do the math wrong a Helium 4.6K Sensor would be 16.82 x 7.9mm, which would be a horizontal crop to FF (36mm) of 2.14. With a EF-mount and without the possibility of a Speed-Booster that doesn't seem like a great option. A MFT Version might be interesting though, as there are a lot of great and fast lenses for that System now, especially if the flange distance would allow a Speed-Booster on those, similar to the GH4.

helium sensor in a raven would be 6301 x 2958 with the same crop factor/gate size. if dragon sensor manufacturing really is causing this many issues perhaps this is the solution

They would have to do the switch for the S-W too and pretty much kill off the 6K Dragon since that's basically the 8K Helium cameras.

But I believe the chances for a Helium Sensor switch are basically 0, so waiting for the Dragon Sensor Raven is basically all we can do.

I just find it odd that a company as open as RED has opted to do exactly the opposite and be quiet for almost two months now.
I sincerely doubt that they have so many Helium orders that S-W and Raven don't move at all for this long, especially because Helium was supposed to take stress off from S-W & Raven orders, not shut them down completely. Unless the issue isn't with the sensor's but with the assembly resources.

Either way, speculations and dreaming of sensor upgrades don't really help, an update is the only thing that would.

My rep told me yesterday that if I were to switch to EPIC-W (not going to happen, too much money), that I'd have a camera in my hands by next week. This leads me to believe they have a surplus of 8K cameras sitting on the shelves.

I wonder if the higher-ups at RED have simply halted Raven and Scarlet-W production until the 8K quota is hit. It sucks, but I'm sure RED spent a lot of time, money, and resources developing and releasing Helium 8K / EPIC-W inventory, so it makes sense.

I just got an email from my Bombsquad Rep and this is what he said.."As far as the RAVENs go, right now we're looking at a SPRING 2017 allocation due to the high demand for the DRAGON sensor."

I ordered my Raven on April 21 2016 and had been told I'd have it by Fall 2016 up until today. So it'll be about a year from order to in hands for me it looks like.

Maybe this update will help others figure out their own timeframe for getting allocated.

Thanks for the Update Matt.

This part of the sentence "high demand for the DRAGON sensor" is confusing me. I sure would love to know what they use those sensors on, especially considering that almost no S-Ws or Ravens (we know of) have been allocated in almost two months.

Assuming that statement is true and they are not only trying to push people into the Epic-W, which I doubt they are doing, and if they are not using all of their resources for 6K and VV Dragons, which I sincerely doubt too, the only remaining option to where the sensor manufacturing resources are going is Panavision's DXL or they have started to outsource their sensors even beyond that, to a camera that still hasn't been revealed yet.

Either way, to me there is a difference between high demand (which I associate with a slow roll out of cameras) and no camera allocations at all. Which to me can only mean that RED has decided to put Ravens and S-Ws on back-burner and focus on something else.

I'm sorry if I'm annoying some of you with my posts, but I'm just trying to wrap my head around this, as I (like many others) expected my camera to be here already, 8 months after the official launch. I'm sure my frustration is understandable.

Trying to figure out what is going on is exactly what we're trying to do so keep your posts coming - I'm doing the exact same thing!

What I don't understand is that Jarred stated in his earlier update posts that we should be in the time frame where they ironed out all of the sensor/supply issues with Raven/S-W and should be allocating smoothly, but instead of this happening we've regressed back to no allocations occurring... so what happened?

Well, we still don't have a clear cut answer but we can construct a timeline:

From Jarred's 7/09/16 update thread: "Helium will take pressure off our Dragon sensor lines and allow those lines to completely focus on Raven and Scarlet-W sensors. O... and Epic-W will be Helium."
So this tells me that Helium was once part of the Dragon sensor lines - assuming that Helium sensors are now produced (and tested?) separately from Dragon sensors, then we should be at a point where "those lines to completely focus on Raven and Scarlet-W sensors".

Fast forward to the end of September and yes, Ravens were shipping out on a weekly basis until suddenly it stopped... but you know what changed? Scarlet-W cameras started shipping (just look at the "Scarlet-W Queue" thread for October). One can only assume that Scarlet-W got full attention at this point.

Fast forward again to today, and it seems like Scarlet-W's are still being pushed out (but at a slower pace then in October) and new Raven shipments are showing up at dealers (but still no allocations direct from RED) and Bomb Squad reps are reporting Dragon sensor shortages... so whatever path they were on to ease sensor shortages pretty much failed at this point and are back to where we were earlier on this year.

I switched to SW yesterday. Hopefully I'll be allocated soon :) Dec 11th order.

I know this question doesn't belong here, but may be of interest to some are still considering a switch to S-W.

Did you keep your Raven time stamp for the S-W or were you pushed back further down the line?

As far as i know you keep your timestamp when switching either to S-W or Epic-W
