  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RAVEN Allocation

i think now it will be april 8th when we finally get allocations for the first raven packages ordered. since the vlock expander had some mystery issues on production.
i was only surprised because some went out with scarlet packages, so they obviously made some, but not enough to hold onto for us raven guys that committed back on sept 24th. seems if we switched to scarlet we would have our packages, definitely you would of.
 
I ordered I/O package in february 14th, can i assume that it will ship in April?

a raven? it maaaaayyyyy not. depending how many i/o vlock expanders they can crank out, you are about 5 months out on the sept 24th preorder for that package and most likely 1000th in line.
 
Alright, so who switched to Scarlet-W after the latest April Shipping Update?

Number crunching for me says I have to spend $4200 more to get onboard with W. It's not a huge sum of money but its not enough for me to switch over. I'm currently still working with my current gear and its serving me well. When I get allocated for RAVEN is when I get allocated. Plus, our RAVENs are going to appreciate at least 1K after NAB! A pretty sick perk ;). I think they are trying to push people over to W because they are selling RAVENs like hot cakes, which in turn, the price needs to go up for a better cost to profit ratio. While RED is awesome as a company, they are a business and the only way for them to keep food on their families table is to make money. Even for $7K, the RAVEN is a great proposition. It's so close to W's abilities, minus 5K and interchangeable mounts/OLPFs. Identical frame rates 4.5K and down! RAVEN even has a lower compression for 4.5K, though 2:1:1, at 3:1, while W has FF 4.5K at 5:1. (W also has 4.5K @ 2:1:1 at 3:1).
 
Was hoping a lot of people switched to Scarlet-W so I would get my Raven quicker hehe
 
To put it simply, the number of people who ordered RAVEN are many TIMES over the number who ordered W... Just too good of a deal. Also, you have to account rental houses and production companies who bought a bulk order of RAVENs. 1 production house probably picked up 50 RAVENs or at the current rate, one who blast of RAVENs!

We didn't order our Raven until this March, so I'm not really expecting our camera until May/June. Who knows, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I have a feeling even Red is a little surprised by how many of these things sold.
 
Once they ramp up production of their RAVEN's we'll get a better sense of allocation time frames. I actually wouldn't worry about whether you went with a package or not because by the time they allocate your camera, accessories should be easy to come by. It's only a problem right now because of how close W and RAVEN release dates are, and DSMC2 accessories aren't exactly common. Well, some of them are, but not the ones we want haha. Though, if you bought a BRAIN only, you shouldn't have any problems. For a March time stamp, you'll most likely be included in a February allocation because of the order density per day being much, much lower than the first few weeks of RAVEN being available. The biggest mountain to climb is going to be that 9/24 to 10/01 time frame when people bought RAVEN's non-stop. Once that is over, the orders per day is going to decrease and time stamps will cover a longer date range. Perhaps days to weeks.

I can't say May/June, it might be earlier, might be later, or it might be it. Who knows! Not even RED knows to be honest. What they do know is they have A LOT of orders and A LOT of shipping to do haha.

i bought mine through a dealer and went to the RED demo day today and talked to the RED reps and they told me 3 weeks
 
Not sure if this is off topic, but is it possible at this point to go to a RED Store and look at/compare the Raven and Scarlet-W? I guess the question is, have the stores been allocated Ravens yet?
 
3 weeks for what? It you purchased the camera within the first week, yeah I can see 3 weeks but if you buy the camera now or even Feb/March, its HIGHLY unlikely you'll receive your camera in April or even May. They haven't even allocated pre-W RAVEN switchers and barely any RAVENs. No packages of RAVEN have been allocated either.

RED Stores no. NYC, Miami, etc will not have W or RAVEN until they are readily available. Any cameras they do get in are customer cameras who had their cameras ordered through them. If you want to mess with a RAVEN and W I recommend going to RED HQ or if you want to use them together, you'd have to coordinate with your bomb squad rep to have those cameras available at RED Hollywood. Pretty sick set over there.

Anyone going for it? I am thinking quite a lot about it but something just clicks with the RAVEN that doesn't click so well for the W. Also, I like the color of the RAVEN over the W. (Talking about color of camera, not color of image). Though, because I was fairly late in ordering RAVEN, that does mean I get a camera much sooner. But I'm not in a rush like most people on here that have jobs scheduled around a camera. I still have perfectly capable gear.

What are your thoughts?

Well I'm in a bit of a different situation I actually sold mt gear to purchase the Raven plus tons of accessories which I currently have now just waiting on the camera package. I'm hoping I get my package by May for a project as well as a June project in LA/OAKLAND

for me the things that tipped the scale to S-W were simple.

#1 Interchangeable Lens Mounts and OLPFS

#2 5K (I know it doesnt seem like a huge jump from 4.5K.. but it is)

#3 Future Proof (there has been no word about Ravens ability to Upgrade. S-W has a path to weapon 6K)

#4 price difference (the price difference was so small, as it is I've paid off the price difference from the S-W since its been here)

Valid points, no doubt. Cameras are as different as the people behind them.

1. For me, I only use EF and by the time I can fork over $$ for PL glass, I'll have enough money to buy something else lol.

2. 5K is valid but my work is all 4K. I suppose it would be nice to have extra room on top and bottom and also to downscale but to make a huge difference you need 6K. Though, I cannot deny the 5K resolution haha.

3. I believe in modularity but I do not believe in future proofing. Like the only reason I would buy a Weapon is to upgrade to the 8K. I wouldn't buy a W to buy a Weapon 6K, especially if the new line of sensors is coming within the next year or so. Again, by the time RAVEN or W are old news, RED will be on to newer and more impressive things. Technology is moving so fast that future proofing works for about the first year or so. After that, you know you will want the latest and newest and that's why the 2nd hand market exists ;). Also, I'm sure RED will have a 'discount' available (a small one of course) for people upgrading to a new camera from RAVEN. Kind of like S-D to S-W had.

4. Agreed. Especially then RAVEN goes to $6950+..... ;) Though, for $5950, I can use that 4,000 to buy some gear :)

yah I guess the thing for me is. I'm not ALWAYS the one using my camera. If a DOP wants to use PL glass the raven is out of the question. I usually use EF glass as well.

Honestly I haven't delivered anything in 4k even tho I shoot most stuff in 6k. (most stuff i work on gets delivered in HD at the end of the day) for me its about my lenses working the way i expect them to.

I guess I'm less concerned about the weapon upgrade and more concerned my camera will have value for trade in for future cameras

yah that $4k could have been used someplace but I wouldnt want it back having worked with the S-W.. its bananas
